AfterElton Briefs: Todd Holland clarifies, Matthew Mitcham misses and more!

Michelle Williams performing at G-A-Y in London

Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

  • After first likening blogs to "cockroaches", director Todd Holland clarified his remarks about gay actors staying in the closet. Since no one has posted a transcript from the Outfest panel, it's hard to know how much is clarification vs obfuscation, but those in attendance at the panel including director Kirby Dick found Holland's comments "regressive." Of course, perhaps Dick is also a cockroach.
  • Director Don Roos (Happy Endings,The Opposite of Sex) also spoke out on the issue at Outfest saying he prefers more mystery about his actors and that:
I have a deep respect for homophobia [in American society] and I don’t think it will ever go away. I don’t think actors coming out is going to help end homophobia. I think doctors, teachers and lawyers coming out will end homophobia.

It's not like actors reach millions of Americans or anything. Roos also says homophobia makes us more interesting. Personally, I vote for less interesting, more rights.

Is that my medal I see down there? Oh, crikey...

And today's Briefs are brought to you by...

This guy!

Matthew Mitcham

It's a pity to see Matthew miss out on a medal- especially by only a few points- but as he says he's doing a new routine and so it'll improve in time.

Plus, really, any excuse to see him in speedos is always nice. A good perve and a good role model for us "young" gays over ehre in Australia, and of course, the rest of the world

Do you not recognize the

Do you not recognize the briefs guy as Jesus Luz - on-again off-again boy toy of Madonna in recent months? It's from a recent GQ Italy photoshoot.

Do you know where I can

Geez, Madonna is so lucky. :(

Agreed, but...

I wonder where lil baby "Jesus" there falls on her luck-meter? Probaby pretty low! She's flippin' Madonna!

What the hell?

Who in their right mind has 'respect' for homophobia?  I didn't know irractional fears of gay people deserved to be treated with respect and dignity in this day and age, but then again, what do I know?  Also, to think a phobia can never go away... I guess all those psychiatrists and doctors that work to cure people of their fears should just give up now and work on how to improve Viagra for the old rich men of the world.  Because clearly that's all that matters.

Don Roos

I took the comments by Don Roos to mean that he can't make light of homophobia because it is so deeply ingrained in Middle America and the Bible Belt (if that's not redundant); it's not going to go away any time soon. I think his "respect" is more of a "fear" type of respect.

Also, to Middle America (and yes, I do realize this is a generalization), Hollywood actors and sports superstars are kind of alien, so a big-name athlete or actor coming out might have very little impact.

I think Mr. Roos is right in thinking that the biggest impact occurs when people you know come out as gay, like your lawyer, your doctor, your CPA (sorry, self-reference).

We are, after all, our own best role-models.

That's how I took his

That's how I took his comments.

However, I don't think Hollywood is helping to show that one's friend or neighbor or doctor, etc., could be glbt by having a character who happens to be glbt on tv or in the movies.

I do have to remind myself from time to time that in the entertainment business discrimination is deemed acceptable. I think there is a laundry list of things people can be discriminated against before sexuality such as color of their skin, height, or weight, etc.

I really do agree with you!

As a gay biochemist (Ph.D.) I have always felt there was a lack of gay role models.

And quite frankly I find the need for queer actors to be out to really offensive. Point one it plays to stereotyping. Oh yes, most gays are all would-be-actors or in the entertainment industry and, of course, no one who is gay would possibly be a physicist or anyone else that could be intelligent cause we all know we are so Project Runway.

Plus I am really getting tired of the "homophobia" fall-back. Yes! Alienate all marginally for gay straight people by rubbing their faces into it.

My role model was Frank O'Hara

Except I don't drink as much as he did.

We've reached a new juncture in gay life. It's no longer underground and marginalized, but the Big Brss Ring of "Acceptance" eludes us. Perhaps that's for the best. Assimilation can be boring as hell.

But what distresses me is people who should know better like Roos and Holland prevaricating about wheterh or not actors shoudl be out. Of course they should be out. ALL LGBT people should be out. Being out isn't easy, but living in the closet is infinitely harder. And when you're in the public eye these days thinking the closet will protect you is sheer folly.

So right!

We are, after all, our own best role-models.

Virgo108, you are totally right! Its nice to have media figures and athletes come out but when it comes down to it all politics is local. That is why we must come out and we must live our lives as the neighbor who just happens to be. People can easily put us in the category "those people" because they don't know who is a member of our community near them. It is our job, like it or not, to represent and make ourselves known as normal citizens who have a characteristic unfamiliar to them. I do this every day in my office and have for almost 12 years in the business world. I am proud of who I am and unafraid to share it when others talk about their wife or husband or children. Because in the end, not only do I have to get along and accept them, they have to get along and accept me. Its a two way street.

How singularly innocent I look this morning.

Woot

For Britains medal, I would say I feel sorry for Matthew but I would be lying!

I'm handing back my toaster oven

I've got to opt out of gay solidarity for a moment to give a big YAY for the lad Daley, too. I've got no idea what Daley's sexuality is, but apparently he's faced quite a bit of homophobic abuse in his school because he wears speedoes a lot. And a World Champion at 15? That's just so damn cool.

Tommy D

he does give off a 'gay' vide for me.

i agree; i find it hard to feel for mitchel, wen he was beat by the first ever brit winner n the youngest competitor. bravo mr daley.

He'll face a lot pressure at olympics

Tons more than Matthew that will be defending champion. British usually put a lot of pressure in their younger stars (like Laura Robson), but Tom is competing at the best level since very very young, so i think he can deal with it.

About the gay vibe, diving is a pretty gay sport, even in the closet i think there's a good bunch of gay divers. And the best of all times, the great Greg Louganis is gay too

Oh my God! Pubic Hair!

It's good to see a model with body hair--even if it's down there.  Next thing you know--models with chest hair--it'll be revolutionary!
