"Torchwood: Children of Earth: Day One" minicap

I didn’t manage to get to sleep last night, and no, it had nothing to do with the escalating economic crisis or my mounting To Do list. It was because I was sitting up eagerly anticipating the return of Torchwood here in the U.K.! You poor Yanks have to wait until July 20th when BBC America will air it.

After the harrowing emotional overload of the Season 2 finale, the show is finally back and has been upgraded to BBC One — the most accessible BBC station, and is being broadcast over five consecutive nights as an epic sci-fi feast for the senses.

Keep reading for my minicap, but be be warned there are spoilers! (And note: AfterElton.com will have more extensive coverge when the show airs in the U.S.)

The thrilling tension of Day One takes off from the very get go. A time warp occurs sending us to Scotland circa 1965 where a palpable tension fills the air. We suddenly fast forward to the present day where it seems all of the children in the world have gone haywire, ensnared in some alien trance, chanting ‘We are coming. We are coming’.

Very creepy...

Of course, at the heart of this action is our deliciously romantic twosome, Captain Jack Harkness and his subordinate/official boyfriend Ianto Jones. They are waiting in a hospital, ready to suction out some extraterrestrial’s heart when an adorable South East Asian medic, who goes by the name of Rupesh, notices the two in harmonious coupledom.

Rik Makarem as Rupesh
.

This is all a bit new for Ianto, and as such, he is quick to expresses his discomfort at his new ‘mo status. The overtly confident and strapping Jack however, quickly shrugs this off. He has more important things on his mind, such as saving the children of earth, whilst wrestling with personal demons, which might very well threaten the stability of his very own family.

But despite the global kerfuffle surrounding an alien takeover, the spectre of Ianto’s new love affair looms rife. Everywhere he goes, he seems to be confronted with prying questions about his newfound sexuality.

In a subsequent heartfelt conversation, the unassuming Ianto reveals that he is by no means a fully-fledged lover of men; rather, he is just in love with Jack.

After all, love is blind! Or is it really, when your boyfriend looks like a Hollywood movie star?

The plot thickens as we learn there has been a government order calling for Jack’s death, the adorable Asian man becomes entangled in a plot that we didn’t see coming,  and, oh , yeah, the resident brunette, Gwen — always the beacon of feisty femininity — is in for a heck of a surprise!

All of this action comes screeching to a heart-thumping, tongue-wagging climax that will leave both sci-fi aficionados and swooning John Barrowman fans gasping for their last breath.

Please note, if you were lucky enough to watch the first episode, feel free to discuss in the comments, but please don't reveal anything in your subject lines!
