Another gay bites the dust: "Lipstick Jungle" axed
Just when the smoke is starting to clear on the whole Grey’s Anatomy fiasco, gay visibility on TV takes another hit as NBC pulls the plug on Lipstick Jungle. Having successfully survived the faceoff with the similarly-themed Cashmere Mafia which was axed by ABC last season (and featured a lesbian storyline of its own), Lipstick failed to take off in its sophomore season ... which is too bad because this one had plenty in store for the gays this season. Even though the blink-and-you-may-miss-him gay assistant Roy (Matt Lauria) was somewhat of an afterthought on the show, his absence will still be missed as we lose yet another gay character on TV. And of course, we also have out actor Cheyenne Jackson's appearance on the show to worry about. Let's hope the net doesn't pull the plug before that one airs. Submitted by on Thu, 2008-11-13 15:07. |

This cannot be happening!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is this a repercussion of Prop 8 being passed? That the TV networks all think that the country is homophobic?! Isn't it more reason to promote understanding by having gay assistant and cute muscular topless men wearing short shorts and only suspenders? This is a shame because I've come to love LJ.
I also haven't seen the dress made by Keith!!!!!!!
Bummer!!!!
Repercussions
Miserable ratings
I looked at the episode guide on tv.com for LJ and the first season's ratings were just about the worst I've ever seen, ranging between 4 and 6 out of 10. The show is now running at about 7.5 in the second season, but the well may already be poisoned.
Top shows like Lost, Heroes and CSI have viewer ratings that average around 9.
Just watched the pilot episode myself and found it to be a lot better than much of the crap on the networks.
Well damn, and "Pushing Daisies" is probably gonna be axed too.
I didn't think "Lipstick" was great art, like "Daisies," but it was high-gloss fun, with a sensational performance from Kim Raver as Nico. And it was nice seeing how Brooke Shields has evolved into a fine, credible actress as well. Ah well, more fodder for when I do my next Amazon list of Shows I Killed By Watching Them.
Funny That....
Funny how if you put even the most minor of gay characters on, and you can't cancel a show without accusations of homophobia and outrage from the gay community, and every episode features complaints about lack of use of the gay character, even if he's intended to be minor. Meanwhile, shows with no gay characters at all skate free with no notice at all from gay watchdogs.
The message here is clear. Don't include gay characters on your show, because you're only going to be held to a more exactling standard and constantly risk outrage. And of course, God forbid you should let an actor playing a queer character go, which we all know NEVER happens to people who play straight characters....
CRAP
THe Networks are a mess
I believe that SEX AND THE CITY opened the door for a whole new genre of television, shows with strong confident women who speak their mind and don't play second fiddle to the the shows male stars. I guess all those white male heterosexual network executives feel threatened by that concept. As they are by GLBT characters.

Interesting posting on NBC boards that Lipstick Jungle is up for consideration for cancellation, but apparently has not YET been cancelled.
