ABC orders gay-inclusive sitcom pilot about families

ABC has ordered a pilot from the magical producing team of Steven Levitan and Chris Lloyd, who between them have helped bring us such gay faves as Frasier and The Golden Girls (they were also responsible for the dubious Back To You and Stacked ... but they can't all be winners).

The unnamed pilot has an intriguing premise, and shows a lot of promise. It's about three families who have their lives recorded documentary-style by a Dutch filmmaker:

"It will revolve around a traditional married couple and their three kids; an older guy, his younger wife and their adopted son; and a gay couple who have just adopted an Asian infant.
All three families live in the same suburb, and there’s a common thread that brings them all together. The Dutch documentarian, meanwhile, has returned to the U.S., where he lived with one of the American characters as an exchange student 15 or 20 years ago."

The producers looked to their own lives for inspiration, and say they don't want it to feel "like a soft, cutesy family show. This will be presented in a way that will be very relatable to people of all ages."

There's no word on casting, but hopefully we'll get a chance to see one of the rarest things ever witnessed on television ... an actual gay family.

I probably won't be able to watch this

Based on the description of the concept, I suspect it will be all that shaky-zoomy cam that's used on The Office. Sorry, I just don't think it should be necessary to take Dramamine before watching a television program.

    The Office has never seemed

The Office has never seemed all that shaky or zoomy to me, although I know they have definitely zoomed and shook before. I only get dizzy, though, when filmmakers spin the camera around and around a circle of people... I hate that! This could easily be more like a traditional documentary, though; we will just have to wait and see.

    Good news!

I just hope ABC gives this one more of a chance than they did their last sitcom with a gay family. It's All Relative ran one full season (2003/2004) and got decent ratings, but was cancelled anyway. It starred two out gay actors, Christopher Sieber and John Benjamin Hickey, as the long-term gay couple, and Maggie Lawson (Psych) as the daughter they raised together, as well as the wonderful Harriet Sansom Harris as the mother of the young man the daughter was going to marry. Unfortunately, a lot of gay folks objected strongly to the anti-gay comments made by the straight blue-collar father of the young man (even though the gay couple gave as good as they got), and needless to say the homophobes had no interest in seeing any portrayal of a successful gay family. It will be interesting to see if the producers and writers of this new show can better navigate those (still) rocky waters.

    Intriguing

I hope this pilot gets picked up to see the light of day - so many pilots dissapear, and this one has promise.
