AfterElton Briefs: Guess which out "American Idol" contestant is getting hitched?

Out British comedian Stephen K. Amos

Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

  • British comedian Stephen K. Amos talking about the pressure of being an out, black stand-up comic: "Show me the other black gay comics who were talking about their experiences. I worry that if it doesn't work out, then when's the next guy going to get a chance?"
  • This infuriating story of a Navy sailor brutalized for two years because he was suspected of being gay (and didn't come forward because he feared discharge) should be required reading for anyone who thinks dragging their feet on DADT is acceptable.

Jim Verraros and partner Bill Brennan are tying the knot this weekend.

  • Congratulations to out American Idol Season One contestant Jim Verraros, who will be marrying long-time boyfriend Bill Brennan this weekend. (t/y to GayTVluver for the tip).
  • Finally, in [sarcasm]sad[/sarcasm] news, Focus on The Family has been forced to lay off more employees (something they've already had to do twice this year.)

And today's Briefs are brought to you by...

This guy!

needs to be introduced to Andre Kelley -  one of the out comedians profiled in "Laughing Matters... The Men." He's terrific, and has been working the U.S. comedy club circuit for years.

    Andre Kelley

Yes, Andre is great.  I also wanted to mention two hilarious and successful out African-American lesbian stand up comedians, Karen Williams and Gloria Bigelow.

    FoF Layoffs

While decreased FoF resources are a good thing, I also have sympathy for the jobless.  Even homophobes oughtn't be unemployed in this economy.  Hopefully they'll find new, less evil work.

    Infuriating

is hardly even appropriate. there needs to be a stronger word for the absolute disgust I feel when reading crap like that....... abhorrent, mind-numbing rage is more like it. If these were straight kids in college being hazed the whole effin world would be up in arms....

O Liberté, que de crimes on commet en ton nom!

    Heartbreaking

At least hazing usually has an end for college kids.  This poor serviceman had to endure it with no end goal in sight.  It does not say whether the abuse continued after his return from Bahrain, but if the unit came back together, it may have.  The truly awful part is that he suffered this type of treatment, to the point of traumatization, without complaint because he was afraid they would kick him out.  Eventually, the mental burden becomes more than he can bear, so he tells his superiors...and they kick him out.  So all his suffering was for nothing.

His fellow sailors wanted to drive him out of the military and eventually, with the help of their commanding officers and DADT, they were successful.  It's nice to know that our military still teaches those serving the importance of setting a goal for themselves and sticking with it, no matter how long it takes, until you achieve your objective.

Those sailors who tortured him have not the least idea of the sacrifice he was willing to make to serve and protect his country.  They don't even understand what these ideals we're supposed to love mean.  They're not heroes by any stretch of the imagination.

    Congrats to Jim and Bill!

Jim Verraros and Bill Brennan's wedding plans have made me so eager to have my partner and my wedding get here! October 10 can only come so fast though. I will tell you that there is nothing more fun than doing this together. Wedding gifts have already starting coming in (UPS is annoying and the Postal Service is better suprisingly) and my partner's work had a bridal shower for him this week. Our engagement photos are coming along today we think. If you haven't thought about it, do it! Go as whole hog as you can, make the day your own and just be a bride and gush about it all year long until the big day comes!

...and thanks for humoring me... ;-)

Jim Verraros and Bill Brennan's Wedding

After Elton should really do a wedding special.

I bet there's some wonderful gay celebrity wedding stories and photos.

That would be a great feature.

It's wonderful that Jim and Bill are also going to Iowa to get legally married.  Does anyone know if Illinois recognizes same-sex marriages from other states?

They should get married in Pella, Iowa

It's just five hours west of Chicago. It has the largest operational historic windmill in North America. I drove through last weekend and toured it; they take you up through the inside and then to the outside balcony to the sails of the windmill and show you how they anchor the very top of the building which rotates since the top of the windmill can be turned 360 degrees to turn the spinning sails (which are each 82 feet long) into the wind from any direction. The top half of the windmill was constructed in the Netherlands and then transported to Pella and reassembled by the original craftspeople. The windmill is part of a historic town within the town that you can explore. And the bakeries along the main square are to-die-for. The town celebrates its Dutch (Netherlands) heritage; the Netherlands was the first country to provide marriage equality to gay couples. And since it's Iowa Jim and Bill can get married in Pella. Every year Pella plants one hundred thousand tulip bulbs (new bulbs every year) which makes their tulip festival stunning; it reminds you of the fields that are part of the massive flower markets around Amsterdam.

It was interesting to contrast that windwill with the gigantic modern windmills/wind turbines manufactured in Iowa with 150 foot long blades and generating power across Iowa (which ranks in the top 3 states for windpower); it makes that scene from the new Star Trek where starships are being built outside in Iowa not seem too far off since Iowa is the most college educated state in the USA.

If you love Scandinavia/Northern Europe, you'll like Iowa since many Iowans are of Scandinavian/Northern Europe descent and celebrate our heritage with festivals across our state. Some must-see Scandinavian/Northern European places in Iowa include Amana Colonies (German), Pella and Orange City (Dutch), Elkhorn (Danish), and Decorah (Norwegian).

For people outside the USA, Iowa landscape - rolling hills and fields, forests, lakes, rivers, bluffs - most resembles the temperate multi-seasonal country of Uruguay.

    It's not like that everywhere

I am currently an Active Duty military member in the Navy. It's not like that across the board. Trust me alot/most of my shipmates are very accepting. There's plenty of straight sailors who support and defend our gay/lesbian shipmates in and out of uniform. Please don't let this smear the image of our honorable sailors who defend everyone's freedom in our country.
