AfterElton Briefs: "AbFab" gets its Saffron, another peek at Barrowman's tale, and more!

Will Young enjoys fashion week in London (Pic: Getty)

Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

  • Out singer Will Young has become quite the ubiquitous presence at UK celebrity functions (hey ... he's the Cheyenne Jackson of London!) Actually, in this pic we're more intrigued with the person behind him. No, not the blonde with the Joanna Lumley-circa-New Avengers hairdo, but the mannequin (or is it?) in back with the blue rubber suit and the ... inflatable bananas on her head?
  • There's good and bad news for fans of David Blue. Gay sprite Michel Ausiello is reporting that the former Ugly Betty star has nabbed a starring role in the new Sci-Fi Channel series Stargate Universe. The bad news is this probably means there's absolutely no chance of seeing his adorable Cliff character on Betty again. We wish him the best of luck, but is it just me, or is Stargate quickly approaching CSI territory in the amount of spin-offs?
  • In pilot news, The CW has officially given the greenlight to the new Melrose Place pilot (but there's still no word if any of the characters are gay.) And there's more news about the upcoming American remake of Absolutely Fabulous. We already told you about the casting of Edina (Kathryn Hahn) and Patsy (Kristen Johnston), and it now appears that the crucial role of long-suffering daughter Saffron will be played by relative newcomer Zosia Mamet (the daughter of potty-mouthed playwright David Mamet and actress Lindsay Crouse).

A "shadey" John Barrowman

  • Last week we gave you a preview of the new Torchwood comic strip co-written by out star John Barrowman and his sister Carole. Popculturezoo.com has more details and images from Captain Jack and the Selkie.
  • Finally, in sad news, the Oscar Wilde Bookshop, believed to be the nation's oldest gay & lesbian bookstore, will close its doors on March 29th. The Greenwich Village landmark first opened in 1967 and has endured multiple owners and locations but couldn't overcome the current economic crisis.

And today's Briefs are brought to you by...

    Well

Well, that what I call leaving something to the imagination. But seriouly, Will Chalker would look hot in a snuggie. Actually, so would Will Young.

I have a feeling  there will not be a gay character in Melrose, there is allready a casting call for an "exploring female", which would fill the same sex quota with the "more acceptable" girl on girl pairing and they can always pair her with a guy if it suits them.

    Poor Briefs Guy! That is

Poor Briefs Guy! That is truly the most embarrassing outfit I've seen in a dog's age.

    Stargate

Not that I'm a huge fan of the Stargate franchise at this point, but just for point of information:

When Stargate Atlantis recently wrapped up it's run, there was no Stargate series currently on the air. So when the new series comes out, it will be the only Stargate series. So while it is the third series, it's unlike the CSI franchise in that it's cycling them out instead of filling the airwaves with a craplaod of them at once. (SG-1 and Atlantis did overlap for 2 or 3 years).

Now, if you want to compare it to Star Trek in constantly replacing outgoing shows with replacements until diminishing returns kills our interest... that criticism I could totally get behind!

    AbFab

No matter who they cast as Saffron, this AbFab has disaster written all over it. A remake has already been tried and done numerous times (I think of Absolument Fabuleux, the French movie based on the show... it was godawful). I'm torn : I want to watch the disaster when I'm sure I won't like it. It's like watching a trainwreck in slow motion.

    AbFab-less

this whole question was settled with that pathetic Brooke Shields knock-off.

America can't handle AbFab becuase it can't handle lead characters with absolutely no redeeming qualities.

Eddie and Patsy are completely horrid, but if you don't identify with them, there's no point to the show.

    I wonder if that's changing?

It is generally true that the U.S. cannot handle characters that are not "redeemed".  Because:  1. America has never lost its Puritan origins and  2. Unlike other cultures Americans are usually confused between SHOWING something, and ENDORSING something.  So they don't like to SHOW perverse people. The Brits have had horrible shows with horrific characters since Monty Python.

That said, I wonder if that's changing?

The success of cringe-comedy in the Office shows it can be done, and the wave of humiliating movie comedy (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) is also a step.  Now of course, we gays have loved irredeemable deviants since forever, from Oscar Wilde to John Waters.  But I wonder if the U.S. is ready for this?

Unless it's on cable, I can;t see them getting past showing drug use (see SHOWING vs. ENDORSING, above) -- so I'm not holding my breath.
