AfterElton Briefs: Krayon Brooks is fed up, let's have sex, and more!

Matthew Mitcham (Photo: John McRae)

Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

  • Out Olympic hero Matthew Mitcham has given his first in-depth interview since winning the gold medal. When asked by SX News about the controversy surrounding NBC's failure to properly address his historic win (something we covered extensively) he responded “I did get sent links about it, so I found out about it, but in all honesty it wasn’t really my fight, and I wasn’t offended. It was other people that were making complaints and who were really into it." You're welcome, Matthew!
  • Logo (our parent company) has acquired the rights to the first three seasons of the gay-themed reality series Chris & John to the Rescue! from Canada's OUTtv. Premiering in January, it centers on friends John Simpson and Chris Carter (not the X-Files guy) as they travel across North America and deliver their own unique brand of aid to people in need.
  • Rosie O'Donnell's upcoming NBC variety special Rosie Live is garnering quite an eclectic guest lineup. In addition to the previously announced Alanis Morissette and Ne-Yo, Rosie will also be joined by gay faves Jane Krakowski and Kathy Griffin. You can watch Rosie and friends bring the house down at 8 PM EST on November 26th.
  • Above you can see the latest clip from the fabulous Krayon Brooks who is in a dither about the passage of Proposition 8. He wants to teach those who supported it a lesson and has found the perfect solution. BTW, in his other life Krayon is known as Mike Rose, who's also responsible for Planet Unicorn.
  • And finally ... with all the craziness surrounding Proposition 8, this may be the most stupid. Ed Young, the pastor of a Texas "megachurch", has issued a challenge to his straight congregation. He's asking married couples to have sex for seven straight days to reclaim sex for married couples. Yes, seriously. Therefore, we're issuing our own challenge to all AfterElton.com readers. We want you to have as much HOT GAY SEX as you can. C'mon people ... make us proud!

And today's Briefs are brought to you by...

This guy!

    Okay, then.

If anyone could inspire tons of hot gay sex, it would have to be Nick Youngquest.

    Krayon Brooks' idea...

Wasn't there some TV movie to that effect? "If Gays Went On Strike" or something like that?

    Rosie, Krayons, and briefs

I saw a commercial for the Rosie variety show today and can't wait.  Why have variety shows been away for sooooo long?  Those are the BEST! Common, seriously!! The Mandrell sisters, Sonny and Cher, and (dare I say...) Donnie and Marie (darn those Mormons)!

Thanks for introducing me to Krayon Books.  I'm a huge Planet Unicorn fan, and I love this kind of coo-coo bananas craziness.  :))

BTW: someone should tell Nick Youngquest to get a new chair... that one is tack-E !!

Thanks, Matthew, for clearing that up.  I thought offensive behavior was, you know, offensive.  Didn't mean to disturb your beauty rest.

    ease up on matthew

It's not his fault, it's NBCs...all Matt did was proudly become the first out gay Olympic gold medalist at the time of his competition, celebrated it naturally with his family, friends and those he loved, by all accounts has been gracious, nice and a national hero while just being himself.

He's right, this wasn't his part of the fight...he did more for "the fight" then a hell of a lot of other people did by the time he's what, only 21? 20?  This may have been the greatest moment of his life - let him enjoy the aftermath!

By being who he is - out, proud, open is huge in my book...it's NBC that still owes me an explanation, an apology and some promise of a better future in its broadcasting inclusiveness, so give Matt a break guys!!

Thanks, Matthew for being an inspiration to a lot of us - you've done your share!!

    Peace, all.

    Mitcham

Matthew does what he does well. You do what you do well. It's all good. You both have your focus and I wouldn't want either of you getting derailed from what you do. He has never claimed to be the poster boy for gay activism. His life is about diving. A lot of young people involved in sports have fairly limited experience of the world off the field or outside the pool. Think of the monomaniacal hours spent perfecting their skills. And then ease up.

    Rosie

I love variety shows, and I love the guests (Alanis, Kathy Griffin, etc.) scheduled for the show, but I just can't get past Rosie O'Donnell's silence on the whole Prop 8 issue. The timing of airing this show right now, while we are still protesting for the rights that she didn't support, is not in favor, in my opinion. She could have been a strong voice for us, and she chose to not say a thing, nor did she donate to the cause. I realize that everyone has a right to do what they want in their personal lives and to spend their money and energy on those things that are important to them, and I try to not be narrow-minded and judgemental about this. But the truth is, I have a problem with the fact that someone who is a member of the gay community and who has received so much support from out community, has chosen to not support us in return. I don't think I can enjoy a show that is going to make a lot of money for someone who doesn't care enough about the community to show any support - whether it be verbal or financial - to such an important issue.

    I love Matthew Mitcham!

And it's not just because he's super-cute.  I love that he's out and proud, but that he doesn't fixate on his sexuality.  It's just a natural part of himself.  If only we could all get to that point!

Snicks, I have to say I thought your snarky comment ("You're welcome, Matthew!") to be inappropriate.  It implies that Matthew should be grateful to AE and others for making a stink about the coverage.  Remember, he was there as a competing athlete, not as a gay athlete.  He's fully out, and fully proud, totally confident in public with his boyfriend and his sexuality.  He's certainly done his job, both athletically and as a gay man.

And did I mention how super-cute he is!

There are two problems with NBC's coverage:

    1.  The diver who both won the competition and who performed the single highest-scoring dive in Olympic history, was not focused on nor were most of his dives shown in the primetime coverage of the competition.

    2.  The only out gay athlete did not have his personal life highlighted.

I think we can all agree that #2 was regrettable, but predictable.  NBC has consistently tried to play up the family values aspect of competitors and has shown the personal lives of the (purportedly) straight American athletes as filler to try to get the viewing audience more involved.

However, to me #1 was inexcusable.  There was considerable delay between the actual contest and NBC's primetime coverage.  Normally they only show the dives of the eventual top 3-5 divers and those of the best Americans should they not fall in the top tier.  However, for some reason, NBC chose to completely ignore this tremendous story of an athlete rising from the middle of the pack, overcoming some fairly poor dives and triumphing over the expected winners, the Chinese divers.

To me, this is what the complaints should be about.  Whether it was Homophobia or American Chauvinism, the viewers were cheated of the chance to follow this amazing story.

Mitcham SHOULD be annoyed that the American market (one of the largest in the world) was denied this opportunity, if for no other reason than it will make it considerably harder for him to get lucrative international endorsement deals.

    Snarky?

Well, maybe a little, but I think what we did with the whole Olypmics coverage debacle had as much to do with trying to help out gay athletes going forward as it did with this one particular athlete. Yes, we did raise a stink...and maybe that'll help how they cover the next Matthew Mitcham.

    I completely agree with all

I completely agree with all that, and I certainly hope it helps change coverage in the future. But my point was that Matthew himself has nothing to be grateful to AE for. Based on his comments he was so focused on his sport and his performance, as he should have been, that he didn't really care about how US television covered it. As I read your comment, it made it seem as if Matthew was ungrateful to you, and therefore "at fault" in some way. If you interviewed him and asked about it I'm sure he'd appreciate the potential impact on future coverage of gay athletes. But he certainly had far more important things on his mind than American television.
