AfterElton Briefs: Neil Patrick almost shares too much, Rosie calls it quits, and more!

Neil Patrick Harris being honored in Hollywood (Getty)

Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

  • The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences hosted a question-and-answer event with fans of the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother in Hollywood on Tuesday night, and star Neil Patrick Harris made it all the more memorable when he excused himself to visit the men's room ... with his mic still on. Fortunately someone rushed in to let him know before he pulled a Leslie Nielsen in Naked Gun.
  • Speaking of Neil, later this season we'll learn more about his Barney character when Six Feet Under star Francis Conroy guest stars as Barney's mother.
  • Gays of Daytime has a post about a disturbing episode of the French TV talk show Le Miex C'est D'en Perler (It's best to talk about it). In a show about gay kids, being gay was presented as a choice by the show host and guest child psychiatrist without any counter-argument or differing opinion. Was this the LeFox News Channel?

social commentary or just stupid?

  • Above you can see one of the slogans from the website T-Shirt Hell that has caused so much controversy, the site owner has decided to quit the business. Sunshine Megatron, in a profanity-laced e-mail rant that has to be seen to be believed, blames all the "morons" who just don't understand the "irony and social commentary" that his shirts provide.
  • And finally, a little light has been extinguished in the world now that Rosie O'Donnell has decided to stop blogging. Where will I go now for my fix of bizarre, nonsensical haikus?

And today's Briefs are brought to you by...

This guy!

    Le Mieux C'est D'en Parler

My French is terrible (only 2 semesters), is there a subtitled version of the clip available?

As it happens, I was going to ask the editors if it's possible to expand the coverage to other nations...one of my favorite vlogs here is Tim and Ryan's Gay In The UK, and was thinking that it would be great to get some info about gay men (and our icons) in the media from other countries, like this topic from France. Do we have any bilingual readers who might assist? I suspect we have a few from the German speaking countries.... What do you think?

"Social Commentary"? I know BS when I see it

There is a fine line between social commentary and stupid comments made by people who simply want attention, whether it's positive or negative. People who wear those shirts think they're being witty, or bold, but really, their just jumping on the sensationalism band wagon. No, you are not some expert on social issues, daring to be different and speak the truth, you are an idiot with a t-shirt who thinks being an asshole is funny and OK as long as it's "social commentary." People like that should actually LEARN about these issues, and understand that society and its problems are a complicated beast, not one that can be dumbed down to a t-shirt slogan.

Yes, I can see the point the t-shirt was trying to make, but unfortunately, that message is far too easily misread in that shirt, and is simply a way to sensationalize and issue that should not be taken lightly.

    Barney's mom

I liked Megan Mullaly in the role of Barney's mom's ankles and feet.

I also really like the T-shirt.

No, not "distant gay traces" -- it's distingué traces!

    That T-Shirt dude

has written an eMail threat. He's been skewered for making money for his sick lampoon of hate speech. And now he wants his fans to applaud him as a hero, ask him to keep making T-Shirts -he's practically begging for the attention. The bad ass, wise ass, wry slacker is whining! I'd be surprised if he actually did quit the biz. If he does, there must be some other reason

Business has went south with the economy, every idiot who wanted one of his t-shirts has one and has been there and done that. He wants to explain his failure on one shirt? But plans to re-issue a collection of his most offensive T's as a final flip off? He needs to go back to being that sick dude who's always writing on bathroom walls.

    T-Shirt Hell and Sunshine Megatron

I got that email today because I had placed one order with T-Shirt Hell and was on their email list.  "Petulant" came to mind as I read that email, as did some other words.  That asshole doth protest too much.

It's easy to get attention or even a laugh.   Either a witty phrase or a steaming pile of manure can achieve the same result.  Whether a joke, a gag, or a T-shirt is funny is judged not only by the creator or conveyor, but also by the receipient.

It is a sign of bad humor, lack of grace, and over-inflated ego on one's part when one accuses others of stupidity and misguided sensitivity because others do not find one's expressions to be funny or meaningful.  It is ignorant and boorish to create such a T-shirt and act as if it is inconceivable that there are indeed people who will be encouraged by the message to beat up someone after having sex with them.

So, along with all the ranting and raving to get more attention for himself, he is trying to make more money during the last days of T-Shirt Hell.  At least he is consistent.

I added T-Shirt Hell as a friend on MySpace after I read the farewell/fuck-you message.  While I don't find the shirt funny or ironic, I do find humor and irony in the message.

Art should not be subject to the lowest common demoninator

While I agree the dude came off like somewhat of an as in the email, the shirt itself is not offensive.  It's clearly making fun of self-loathing closteted gay people.   When you say something like this:  Yes, I can see the point the t-shirt was trying to make, but unfortunately, that message is far too easily misread in that shirt, what you're basically saying is "some people are not as smart as me and those people should be catered to".  I think those people should be disregarded.

    and what you're basically saying...

...is that you're a tool who thinks you're smarter than everybody else.

Should people who aren't as smart as me (which, by the way, is not what I was talking about)  be allowed to laugh at an issue they don't fully understand?

And since when is it fair to make fun of people who are closeted?

Some of those t-shirts are pretty good, but some of them, including this one and one on kids killing themselves to name a few, go too far. I've never gotten a shirt from there, and after that rant I'm not eager to, either. But I do think it's sort of funny that it seems like "the gays" defeated him. Gay Power!

Considering How Many "Straight" Men Buy Into The T-Shirt

I think it's great. Maybe it's an East Coast view but if I hadn't read your commentary, I would have thought. FABULOUS!

Yes, it's "BAM", "I'N YOUR FACE!", but so is the violence inflicted on out gay men (teens and adults) by their "straight" crushes or tricks who think they can hide their self-hatred and internalized homophobia behind violence.

Even looking at popular culture examples (Craig violently shoving JP and calling him a "FAG" after just having professed his love and intiating a sexual encounter with JP AND THEN violently attacking his own girlfriend to try to erase the "gay", Queer As Folk Justin and Chris Hobbs, etc)

There are loads of examples in tv and film that I think speak to the message of the t-shirt and the way the closet can torture gay mean into being violent homophobes.

I think the T-Shirt is meant to Call Out the ignorance and stupidity of that way of thinking.

The joke/commentary is on the warped thinking of the self-hating violent closet case, not on the man who's getting beat up.

    About those T-Shirts

While i agree many of those shirts are offensive, i can kind of see where he's coming from; a sort of reverse psycology on the crap that's happened, satirically trying to support it.

Hell, i recall a funny youtube vid of a gay man on sitting on a couch, telling the viewer to "join the gay army" though also adding "cause we can't join the real army"

    Nukely's picture

    The joke is

This: Fag bashers are all really gay, ha, ha. Get it?

Of course Fag Bashers aren't gay, and they know that, too. So when they see this t-shit it doesn't cause them to question fag bashing. What it does, in it's way, is glorify fag bashing. I doubt that the person who buys that T-shit has any threat of being beat up because it suggests that fag bashers are themselves gay.

The dude is looking for pity and free publicity because he can no longer make a living from his crass slogans and he is using this one T-shirt as his excuse. Give me a break.

    Unfortunately, you missed

Unfortunately, you missed the joke and misinterpreted what the shirt is saying.  It is NOT saying that fag bashers are gay.  It is making a statement that there are a lot of deeply closeted gay people out there who think they're "safe" if they act anti-gay enough.  Overtly, it's addressing the extreme case where a gay person would have sex with a guy, and then, since he beat him up afterward, it would mean he really wasn't gay.  But you can extend the idea then to people who are anti-gay verbally to compensate for their underlying gayness that they want to avoid acknowledging.  The shirt actually intends that people make that extension.  It's really a brilliant shirt.

While I love the shirt I'd never wear one, simply because so many people, like you, would misinterpret the message.

    Nukely's picture

    I got the joke

We are basically saying the same thing. If the T is saying that "anti-gay" acting is compensation for closeted gay activity then that is the same thing as suggesting that bashers are (or could be) closet cases, like I said.

Intersting though, I can totally see you buying that t-shirt and admiring yourself in the mirror but never wearing it in public.

    seanb's picture

    No, you're STILL missing

No, you're STILL missing the point.  The point is NOT that gay bashers or anti-gay people are really gay.  That's a fairly common conceit of some gay people, but it's not a logical thought and not based in reality.  Look at it this way.  You're assuming the shirt is pointing at anti-gay people, when in reality it's pointing at closeted gay people.  There is a SMALL overlap between the two, but that's it.  The overwhelming majority of anti-gay people are NOT closeted gays, and they are not in any way part of this discussion.  We're starting with closeted gays, and then talking about those that deny their sexuality to themselves by acting out in anti-gay ways.

Now don't make me have to explain this to you again!

    isoron's picture

I think you are arguing with the wrong folks!

You need to be old and cynical enough to appreciate the shirt!  Hey get 10 or 15 friends from the 80's dead of ------- and you have a perspective.

I'd rather own that shirt then an Obama Plate!

While i may never wear it in public... I did buy one of these for severl reasons:

    1. I See the social commentary in it.

    2. working for a Non-Profit I do classes on High School LGBTQS (straight) Equality and can use this on one of my classes.

    3. I love this site, i own several t-shirts from it... have given t-shirts as gifts from it... and my father has even submitted a couple ideas and Won once ("I'm Anna Nichole's Baby Daddy") so i have a sense of love for the site.

That underwear model is supposed to be hot?

Sorry, dude, but obviously you and I have different ideas about what is hot.  First of all, he has his head shaved, which makes him look like a black skinhead.  That just does not look good on any black man who can grow hair.  Why do a lot of black guys shave their heads anyway?

That tattoo of a gun makes me that that someone's proof of the Y chromosome is about to be shot off.  That alone is a major turn off.  And even if the gun was pointed elsewhere, I would still be turned off.  Anyone who has tattoos is not the man for me.  I simply don't understand the appeal of tattoos.  They're gross.

The colors and pose are just ridiculous.  You would have better off showing a regular joe who is not a gym rat sitting around in boxer underwear.  I have to give this picture an F-minus.

To each his own, I guess.

To each his own, I guess.  You're a bit out of touch on the hair issue.  Lots of guys (and women too, for that matter) LOVE the shaved look, especially on black guys but often on other guys as well.  And the overall coloration of the picture is FANTASTIC, and really makes the picture work.

(BTW, it's a bit distracting when all your posts are in bold, and when each line is independently centered around the middle rather than being left justified.  Unless you think it's accomplishing something for you, you might want to consider eliminating those effects.)

    jago87's picture

    Wow dude

Wow dude, take it easy... Just because the writer features someone he thinks is hot, doesn't mean you have to list the 101 reasons why you think otherwise. While it doesn't apply to many situations, I think here you could use a little "if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all".

PS I concur with the please stop emphasizing all your words with bold text, as it makes things more difficult to read and actually de-emphasizes what you have to say.
