hmmm
in response to the chasity bono thing, an old friend wrote me:
'so liz, when will you become a boy?'
i emailed them back and said 'never. i enjoy being a woman, except when i'm cramping like a bitch' and then we went and had this annoying debate about the whole "well, if you dress like a boy, and look like a boy" thing.....
I personally am not a 'girly' dresser, but i also don't dress totally like a guy....but reading the emails, i did think "oh great, i just know people are gonna start thinking lesbians secretly want to be men..."
almost reminds me of the article today about 'effeminate' men and how some think gay men want to be women. frusterating.
confused.
Gosh, I get the feeling that Bono wasn't even thinking about you or your strife when she announced that she was going to transition. Somebody should really talk to him about that.
wow
good job on actually NOT reading what i said.
I know damn well she wasn't thinking about me. why would she? I simply said the email i got just reminded me that i bet this will reinforce the idea that lesbians want to be men.
and i never said i dress manly, so i'm not sure where you got that from.
Please foregive me
And this is all about your email buddy and the fact that he/she is now going to believe that you want to transition to be a man because of Bono and how irritating is that for you? He really messed up your life? I migtht agree if only your position wasn't so damn funny in the first place.
Once again we are at odds because I believe that what you wrote is very shallow and I called you on it; but if you please, I would still love to know why it isn't shallow.
you know what?
Nukely, i'm sorry, but i won't continue this debate with you anymore.
you seem to be taking what i said WAYYYYY out of context and no matter what i say, you WILL put words in my mouth as you did the first time and like you did this time.
sorry i am shallow to you. just don't talk to me then, ok? I think that might be the best solution.
WTF?
If you want to skip this issue I'm not about to force it.
In the future if you make a comment I find to be ignorant, I will, as always, comment on what I find to be eronious and ask for an explination, as I did now. If you can't take that, too bad.
If I am totally out of line, I hope the editors of this site will correct me because your opinion is quickly losing value.
as much as I agree that
as much as I agree that anyone who wants to transition should and it makes memadwhen pplare transphobic, it IS probably true what Liz said. Watch a Rachel Maddow vid on youtube and some idiot will say that Rachel really wants to be a man or something. Clearly this annoys Liz, I think it would annoy many people, and Chaz transitioning probably will further this idea.
Liz never said Chaz shouldn't transition or anything negative and you were out of line I think. Your response was MUCH more hostile than was needed. I would have thought that on a site like this people could voice their concerns which yes may seem selfish. Its not like Liz made it sound like she thought Chaz was selfish or shouldn't transition, just that unfortunetly as lame as it might make her feel to think it, a part of her was sad that it would durhter stereotypes. Not Liz's fault or Chaz' but ignorant ppl who make no effort to educate themselves.
Are you saying you've never on any issue agrees with something, yet had a small part of you which is like, ahh I wish I didn't and shouldnt feel this, but if I'm honest (as we should be as grown ups and on a safe friendly site) .... etc?
In my own opinion I'm completely happy for Chaz though it might be tough for him, and I get Liz' point but I don't think anyone who I know is that ignorant and wouldn't think that about me even if they were. Even if they weren't I wouldn't want to stop Chaz, not even 1% but I do get the point, ignorant stereotypes suck.

The Rob and Arnie thing
As apologies go, that seems pretty decent. It didn't look like a PR-speak apology.
Just for the record, I have zero idea why I have spent any time accepting what these people say or why I've defended their trolls. It must be some intuitive thing that I'll only understand later. Weird.
Rob and Arnie
I'd be able to swallow thier apology easier if they'd made it before their jobs were threatened. Not a word of apology until they'd lost 12 sponsers? Seems to me the higher ups are trying to run damage control.
People that actually whistle while they work deserve what they get.
Rob & Arnie
I agree with the sentiment, but I listened to a good chuck of that show live and I was truly impressed with the apology. I was worried for a moment -- Rob started off by talking about "ditch dwellers" who just want to drag others into the ditch with them and I thought he was going to try to say that everyone to call him out were "ditch dwellers".
However, his apology didn't shy away from what was wrong about the things he and Arnie said and it didn't sound like he was just repeating what LGBT advocates told him what he did wrong. After the apology he had two transgender advocates -- a transwoman and the mother of a transgender child -- and they had a really substantial discussion.
The mother raised a powerful point by telling Rob that if a transgender child heard the original segment while in the car with a parent, that child would probably feel like they couldn't talk about what they were going through. Later (about 90 min into the show) the mother of the Omaha child who inspired the original segment called in and Rob made sure she got to tell her story. I stopped listening after that because it had been going for 90 minutes.
Overall, regardless of the sincerity of the apology, they put together a very informative show about transgender issues, which does help amend the damage they did with the original segment.
Rob of Arnie and Dawn
But an even bigger admission to me was another fact that Rob took pains to mention several times: that his decision to air an apology was not about money nor the opinions of advertisers, "it is not about dollars and sense." Methinks the profound egotist doth protest too much. It's a transparent lie.
Think about it, after a dozen of your largest advertisers pull all their ads from your station because of one show, even if it's your stations most popular show, any station manager would be an idiot if his first response wouldn't be to cancel the show. It is that glaring of a situation, especially seeing that several other advertisers would likely follow suit if amends were not made.
It might not be only about the money for him, but Mr. Ego-For-Hire would have had his show canceled otherwise, because for the station it is about the money. Blow hards of his ilk are a dime a dozen and there is no way in hell he would find another job or fan base like the one he has if he were canned from this job. It was grow up or get out. He made the intelligent choice, I grant him that.
That station may still have to work hard to get new advertisers or get the others to return., to pay for thier losses and believe me, other station managers are listening
Yeah, Rob did the right thing because he was forced to do the right thing. But the way the show was conducted was remarkable. Intelligent and informative. I doubt that a show on the issue of trans gender issues was so anticipated in the region and the show certainly reached more people because of the flap and for that we must be grateful. Rob and Arnie sounded completely contrite. Their main issue, of course, wasn't gender identity or transphobia, but child abuse. They made that clear. I mean, they would have gotten off the hook if they had been talking about adults and beating up adults. I am pretty sure that this is an issue that they won't be talking about in the near future.
I do have to give kudos to GLAAD, who I have critisized in the past. This time thier model did work, and I am grateful for that.
oh that boy....
