AfterElton Briefs: The Out Hot 100 cover, gay marriage begins in Connecticut, and more!

One of these things is not like the others

Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

  • The cover for the Out Magazine Hot 100 has been released, and it begs the question "what the hell is Katy Perry doing on there?" She's a straight performer who became famous for singing the smarmy tease "I Kissed A Girl" and the insulting "UR So Gay". Was this the best they could do?
  • Speaking of insulting, some rapper you've never heard of doesn't want your gay money. "“I’ma(sic) go on the record right now with this. Homosexuals are probably not gonna like this album" says Trick Trick. Damn ... and I was so looking forward to shelling out my pink three dollar bills for this masterpiece.
  • You may have heard about the boycott of the California Musical Theater because of its artistic director's contribution to Proposition 8. Now comes word that Scott Eckern, the man at the center of the controversy, has resigned from the theater.

From the Boyzone video "Better"

  • To get rid of the stench of Trick Trick's rap droppings, take a look at the newest music video from Irish boyband Boyzone. It's for the song "Better" and features each of the guys in romantic scenes, but with out singer Stephen Gately steaming up the screen with a male actor playing his love interest. The matter-of-fact way it's treated is wonderfully refreshing.
  • And finally, with the protests over Prop 8 still going strong, there is good news on the gay marriage front. Today was the first day that gay couples could legally marry in Connecticut. Congratulations to all the couples taking that stroll down the aisle!

And today's Briefs are brought to you by...

This guy!

    Katy Perry?! Really? Huh...

Katy Perry?! Really? Huh... They couldn't have gotten, oh, maybe, an actual gay person?

    Boyzone.......

I seem to recall reading that the gentleman with Stephen Gately is actually his husband or domestic partner or whatever the heck they call each other in the UK. I assume all of the partners are the real life companions of the singers.
    snicks's picture

that was the original idea, but...

"Boyzone originally planned to have their own partners in the video for Better but none of them would appear in it."
    karin1492's picture

    LOL

What does that say about the music video if the partners of the group wouldn't be caught dead in it?

    It's a beautiful video

Have you even watched the video? It's beautifully filmed and a wonderful interpretation of the song.

It's not at all unusual for the spouses of celebrities to be publicity-shy. While the members of Boyzone may love the spotlight, apparently the wives and husband prefer to stay out of the spotlight.

Boyzone Video = Sweet Love Song About Long Term Relationships

Finally watched it. Lovely Pop Love Ballad.

It's actually quite beautiful and affecting. Each couple sort of communcating different "stages" of a relationship  maybe? very adult.

I was particularly touched by the tatoo'd guy and the lady with the adorable fro. There was a joy about them that was very nice.

The video is simple and each couple is very touchingly portrayed (actors of no)

Can't really say anything bad about it.   Hooray for the GAY inclusion. It just seemed very natural and easy to me.

Katy Perry? Obviously they couldn't get Lindsay and Sam

With all due deference to Gus, Cheyenne and Sam the people of the year are the THOUSANDS of anti Prop 8 demonstrators.

    There's a certain symmetry here

Given many gay fans these gay groups have, to say nothing of how many of them seem to have at least one gay member, it seems perfectly balanced to include a gay romantic element mixed in with the straight ones.  Aside from being inclusive towards the audience, it also gives dignity to the gay band member.

But what's the deal with Katy Perry?  She kissed a girl, she liked it and now she's an honorary lesbian or something?

    re: Connecticut

As a gay man living in Connecticut, thanks for the one sentence blurb at the end of this article.  :-)

More seriously, as one door closes in California, one door opens on the opposite coast. The Connecticut Supreme Court ruled last month that anything less than full marriage for gays and lesbians was illegal. Their ruling went into effect today with us being allowed to get marriage licenses. We had no protests of any note, no hoopla, no big deal. We also voted down a question in our local elections last week that would have allowed Connecticut to have a "Constitutional Convention" that would have enabled residents to eventually put together props. Like Prop 8. The question was sponsored by a Catholic Family association. Voters overwhelmingly voted to not allow a Constitutional Convention. Apparently we're quite satisfied to let our Supreme Court handle the big stuff.  I'm thrilled to live in one of the two neighboring States in the USA where Gay/Lesbian marriage is entirely equal and legal. The other being Massachusetts.

    Paging Hedda Lettuce...

Boyzone needs some help on the lip-synching front, especially if there's not going to be any lip locking.

    Why so Surprised

Out always has at least 1 straight person who is gay friendly on their cover for the Out 100. I think last year or the year before it was Anne Hathaway, I think. I may be totally wrong about that.

The boys in Boyzone also love each other

"Better" is great, but "Love You Anyway" is, well, better.  It shows the boys themselves hugging and bonding in a positive way.  No actors.  I've posted the link before, but here it is again in all its Spectoresque glory:

    boyzone

I love boyzone!!! I used to have the biggest crush on stephen gatley when I was younger... actually I sill have a crush on stehen gatley!! I love that they let him be himself in the music video and be with a man and not fake it with a woman, i have to admit that boyzone have always been really supportive of stephen so i'm glad they let it go to this extent. Now we just have to wait for everyone to kick off!!!!

Katy Perry? hmmmmmmmm odd choice! I get that she kissed a girl, but have you heard her actually talk about the song? She gets all coy and shy about the subject and who or what is a trick trick and why doesn't it want my money? I might like his crappy rap!! :P

Are actually Irish. It may not seem like a big deal to ye, but it kind of is to us.

    it's fixed.

    thanks for the heads up!

    Irish

Was just going to say that Randommer!  Not that I'm particularly proud that Boyzone are from Ireland (they are a bit cringe worthy) but they're not from the UK and they're not Brits!

Who's the guy in the briefs? It looks cold where he is!

    Like I've said before, the

Like I've said before, the Irish are technically Brits anyway. I mean why do all the Irish Bands come over here anyway? :p Also the term British was invented to include all of the peoples within the British Isles (ergo the name), which Ireland falls into. It's just a shame that the Irish arn't proud of having a mixture of nationalities within a broader state. Spain anyone? It's worked pretty well there :p
    Randommer's picture

    Them's fightin' words.

So long as Britain remains the name of the country, people from the Rep of Ireland are not British. And there are a myriad of reasons why we don't want to be identified as such.
    mickyfinn's picture

    Ha!

I take it you're joking Jason!  Irish people fought for (AND WON!) their independence and are proud of that so that's why we don't like being referred to as being part of the UK or British!  Anyway, the Irish "bands" like Boyzone only go to the UK because they know you lot have rubbish taste in music! ha ha
    TerrynJames's picture

    thats so me!!

i totalllly fall into this category!!  i have awful taste in music!!! ;) and I do love boyzone. Hell I even bought no way no way on single!! now that was an awful song!!

    Jay's picture

Yeah but I'm saying why did

Yeah but I'm saying why did they need to fight for their independence for? They already had home rule, what more did they want? Also being called British doesn't make them any less Irish, in the same way that English, Scottish or Welsh aren't any less either. A larger conglomorate of nationalities makes more practical sense. The Irish were just being pedantic.

    Anthony's picture

    Wow...

...You're serious? We were not being "pedantic".

    I'm being entirely serious.

I'm being entirely serious. And this is coming from an Irish Descendent! I'm even part of the British and Irish and PROUD! group on Facebook. So this is a totally unbiased perspective :p.
    Randommer's picture

    We didn't have Home Rule.

We didn't have Home Rule. All the home rule bills were defeated by the house of commons. The one that finally went through was shelved due to WWI, and it was never unshelved. The War of Independence took place in a still entirely British-run state.

The vast majority of Irish people don't consider themselves in any way British. And we're not just being pedantic.

    i'm confused...

when gay marriage became legal in...MA (correct?) did any group or whatever try and get that overturned?

...I'm sitting here and wondering "why did CA decide to let people vote to possibly overturn this?'

    "The mountain has wings."

As long as there are evildoers in society, such groups will arise to create mischief.  I'm sure there was a hue and cry raised in Massachusetts, but the point is that ANYBODY in America, with enough time on his hands to circulate a petition and enough hate in his heart to become a crusader, can mess with ANYBODY's rights.  Marriage shouldn't be an issue at all.  We already have equal rights under the Constitiution, but the public needs to be REMINDED of this fact.  Blacks did it.  Women did it.  We need to get organized and do it too.  We're just as crazy as the next guy; we're just too fashion-conscious to wear the tinfoil hats.

    Lyle Masaki's picture

    IIRC...

the timing was different. There was an attempt to undo gay marriage rights in Mass. but I think the court ruling came at a point when it'd be a while before an anti-marriage measure could be taken to voters... and by then the tide had turned and a gay marriage ban seemed really unlikely to go far (then again thing were looking the same in the early days of Prop 8). In California, the court measure came just in time for the anti-gay forces to rush Prop 8 onto the ballots.
