AfterElton Fantasy Casting: Who should play the "extremely masculine" gay character on "Melrose Place"?
Gay reporter sprite Michael Ausiello has released this little nugget of casting info about the CW remake of Melrose Place: The CW's upcoming reboot is currently casting the role of Caleb, an extremely masculine gay publicist who works with Katie Cassidy's Ella. So they don't just want a masculine gay character, he needs to be masculine ... to the extreme! There's no word on who they've chosen yet, so we're offering a few fantasy casting ideas. Take a look at some choice cuts, and chime in with your own. Remember, this is fantasy casting, so feel free to go as outside the box as you want! The HULK
This is rich...
Stupid producers setting this character up in such a manner. It's all going to be about how extremely masculine Caleb is or isn't. Not about character or anything like that. I realize this is an unnecessary reboot of Melrose Place, but I beleive character still counts in soap opera!
Anyway, reminds me of a play I auditioned for in which the director (a woman incidentally) wanted two gay characters in the script played as straight/butch/masculine to the extreme as possible because that would "really mess with audiences' conceptual of gayness." But the characters in the script talked about sweaters and aesthetics and favorite children's books. (Not that these topics are off-limits to straight guys, but come on...) Anyway, she ended up casting some lovely straight boys who performed the gay characters as straight men who were having sex with one another. The results were mixed at best.
Daniel Craig or Tom Jane (of
Or Thomas Jane AS (the gay
Beard
To be serious for a moment about this, why not select someone with Jake Gyllenhal's build at the moment and a full beard and make him the gay publicist? When have we ever seen the hairy sexy gay with brains and no leather attitude on a show? Someone in the vein of Sarge on Six Feet Under maybe? (evil grin)
James Gandolfini - obviously!
The words "extremely masculine" pretty much make it clear that they are trying to get James Gandolfini to play the role.
But wishful thinking aside they´ll most likely end up with something that passes for "extremely masculine" in the CW World so I expect some boring "pretty" manboy. But please CW - prove me wrong!
He already played this part
I vote for...
Casper Van Dien
Sorry Mr. Jackson...
Some of the 'straight-acting' readers on this site might find it offensive to call Cheyenne masculine, since he clearly has a lighter voice and is too stereo-typical in that he has a musical theatre background.
I'm sure some uknown meathead will f*#& up the role with his extremely bad acting and those same guys will think he's the best character ever invented.
P.S. Yes I'm a bitter queen!

Since this is fantasy casting...
...would it be wrong to nominate a 70's-era Bea Arthur?
I have no reason to explain..
why I gave that 5 stars other than the fact that I just really love Bea and everything's she's ever done, so I could see the 70's version of her pulling that off.

I say Nick Adams or Jensen Atwood
They're both freaking gorgeous!!!
And who is Nick Adams anyway?
I'm scared to find out
I'm scared to find out what CW considers to be 'extremely masculine'...
Is that Schwarzenegger/Stallone masculine? James Bond masculine? (that would be kinda cool though). Watch a lot of sports and drink a lot of beer? Not able to multi-task, but be able to find your way through the jungle whilst wearing a blindfold?
