"American Idol": And the winner is...

The votes are in and the winner is Kris Allen! Feel free to discuss below, but please don't give away the results in the subject line of your comments since not everyone has watched yet.

Personally, I have to say I think Adam Lambert was robbed and that America apparently wasn't ready for a gay Idol. Kris is a perfectly nice guy, but saying he's better than Adam Lambert is like saying vacationing in Albania is better than vacationing in Hawaii. IMHO, that is.

I kind of feel bad for the winner. One, he's going to have to release that crap song as his first single. Two, a lot of his interviews/reviews are going to be overshadowed by statements about how amazing and fantastic the runner-up was. In that KISS performance, Adam wearing that crocodile outfit... he was like some kind of bizarre lizard king. I mean that in a good way.

I did not watch this season...but I tuned in to the ending to see if Adam would win.  I had hope, but collectively, we suffered another defeat.  Interesting that Simon was seated during the celebration.  I will say the Kris did mention that Adam deserved to win.  I cannot wait to see if he addresses the major issue leading to his win in an interview.

Well. . .

. . .the good thing is Adam won't have to record that crappy song.

You sure would think for all the money they spend on this show and the revenue they make, they could come up with better songs than this. . .

. . .but, then again, Clive Davis has his fingers in this, so there ya go. . .

American Idol----Adam Lambert!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kris is good, but, he is NO Adam Lambert!!!!! He was totally 'over-shadowed' byAdam. Tonight with Kiss and Queen, the obvious STAR shown through, andit was NOT Kris, nothing personal. I wish Kris a great musical career, but, heis forgettable. I will Never forget Adam, and neither will anyone else. Just wait for this STAR to SHINE!!!!

The horrid little secret

Did the Fundamentalists try to sway the voting for Kris?

Danny Gokey's Pastor, Jeff Pruitt using Twitter just 3 hours before Tuesday's show, wrote:
Everyone who voted for @ dannygokey should vote for Kris Allen! We need a believer to represent! Kris is an awesome young man from a great ministry! Shout out to rick_bezet ..
The answer is: Yes; this is one of but millions of emails and messages that have been circulating for the past few months. One word in the twit explains why Kris Allen deserved to win, he is a "believer". It doesn't matter if he can sing or not. And Adam did not deserve to win because of course a Jew isn't a believer. But, for sure, an unrepenting faggot is not a believer. Actually an unrepenting faggot is the worst kind of nonbeliever.

Rick Bezet is the pastor of the church that Kris belongs to, New Life Church, which you might remember as the group that recently "cured" one of their pastor's, Ted Haggard, of being homosexual. They believe being gay is a sin, actually they don't believe there is any such thing as being gay. They preach that it is all homosexual behavior which is a sin (abomination) that can and should be abstained from and the only sex that men and women should engage in is marital sex. But of the two, premarital or gay sex, gay is by far the worst, in thier mind.

I know that people are going to try to shame me and say that Kris is a true friend to Adam, and that he's nothing like the evil bastards that run the church he does missionary work for. But really, that makes Kris out to be more like the little boy who pushes bread between the fence to that other little boy in the stripped pajamas.
boy in the striped PJs
And people are going to say that the media are to fault for making a big deal of Kris's religion, except for the fact that his missionary work was mentioned by AI and Fox and it was reported by numerous fundamentalist publications, by his church and others, ad nauseam. If you're a believer there was no way this fact escaped your attention. NO. WAY. The fundamentalist community, the community that Kris works for, was going to make sure that you heard it loud and clear. Kris was a believer deserving of the title and Adam was not. If you weren't a believer, it was still hard to miss.

The horrid little secret that few gay persons seem to want to realize or accept is that they always seem to win, and they will continue to win. We are no match for them. They are stronger, there are more of them and they are growing every day. And they are very wealthy, they believe that it's a sin, that you're robbing God, if you don't give them 10% of your income.

Sure, more and more decent people are shedding their prejudices. But just as many, if not more, are learning new bigotry from these church groups and others like it who are like an evil cancer, their numbers growing by leaps and bounds. It was reported a few years back that the Mormon Church was the fastest growing religion in the world, these fundamentalist religions are growing at a similar pace and are growing by sending missionaries to places like Africa where gay people are stoned to death, the ultimate solution to our sins.

You should know the drill by now:

  • First, of course, we are denied our jobs, regardless of talent, but simply because we are not a believer. √
  • Then our businesses are boycotted. √
  • Then our businesses are destroyed.
  • Then they come after us.

Our laws are tenuous, as prop 8 showed. Any and all of our rights today could easily be eliminated tomorrow. I sometimes wonder if signing up for partner benefits at work today, or getting a marriage license is just putting your name on a list for future elimination. That wouldn't deter me, because who wants to live in a world like that, I mean, besides those crazy Christian fundamentalists?

I know that people will excuse them because that is what they "believe." You know what? Neo-Nazi's believe that Jews are less than animals. But I shouldn't call them on that, because that's their "belief" and they have a Bible that proves it?

I know that there are in fact decent people who count themselves amongst the ranks of Christians. But when they don't want to hear, believe or even consider what I've written? Well, that is the only real power that evil needs. The road to hell is paved with excuses and benign intentions.

HenryZ's picture

I think a big part of why

I think a big part of why Adam lost WAS being talked about so much. None of it is Adam's fault, of course. He didn't ask for Simon to sing his praises all season, or for EW to make him their coverboy. But there are a lot of people out there who see that and think Adam should be knocked down a peg or two. He gets punished for being the best.

Kris is fine and he seems really nice, but I think a lot of "anyone but Adam" votes pushed him over the finish line. I kind of think he knows it, too, by the way he said Adam deserved the win. He looked almost disappointed.

I'm ok with this.

I didn't watch all of it, and I have to confess that in the Queen section, Adam clearly outshined Kris. But, again, hard rock is NOT Kris' forté. Poor Kris gets saddled with that awful dirge, but hopefully his own personality--his folk, indie personality--will come through in his début album.

As for Adam, he's still a winner! This is a guy with a truly awesome voice, who has earned the respect and admiration of a wide range of established stars and who literally has the ability to conquer the recording industry, the theater world and, heck, in the right role, the movies.

Good for Kris

Here's one gay man who's happy with the results.  Just because someone shares my sexual orientation doesn't mean I have to think they're automatically the best in everything, and IMO, Kris was always more appealing in every way than Adam.  Maybe now we can focus on something else for awhile instead of having to see and hear about Adam every time we turn around.  Enough already!

gays for Kris

You are not alone. I've read a lot of support for Kris from gay posters around the net. Not so much at gay message boards like this one, but especially amongst gays who post on message boards that focus on culture, music, television. It's a combination of the fact they like the type of music Kris is likely to record and they don't like what some call Adam's 'screeching' on every song. For many it has nothing to do with who is gay and who is christian, perhaps not even who has the stronger vocal chops. The two singers represent very different styles. It comes down what style of music people prefer.

My favorite musicians (who are gay) include Jake Walden, Chris Garneau, Ed Droste, Sam Sparro and Michael Stipe. While I can easily admit Adam is a very dynamic singer who would more likely fill a stadium, the only Idol song I bought this season was Kris singing Falling Slowly.

Now the poor guy has to release that god-awful No Boundaries.

But people weren't voting for Adam and KISS...

...they were voting for their favorite, so the Kiss analogy is kinda moot.  Kris gave some killer performances this season, well above average renditions of "Ain't No Sunshine", "To Make You Feel My Love", "Falling Slowly" to name three outstanding moments.

Adam was great most of the season too, of course, but this isn't a talent/no talent Top 2.  They both were 2 of the 3 bright stars of the season (Allison being the third).

I just mention the Kiss

I just mention the Kiss performance to note how superior Adam is over Kris. I like Kris and Im glad he managed to beat the system and make it to final 2 on his talent not producer manipulation. I just dont think Kris is on the same level as Adam, who has been pretty incredible throughout the show, Adam killed it on Tuesday night and overall has been more consistent and memorable than any other contestant in Idol history.

Agree and disagree

I agree that Adam killed it Tuesday and has been more memorable than any contestant in history.

But I disagree that the Kiss performance shows Adam's superiority.  It showed him doing great with a performance totally suited to his talents.  If one likes that style of music, then great.  But if one doesn't like Kiss music, but likes the more laid back vibe, then the Kiss performance likely wouldn't do much for you.

For some reason people persist in overlooking to me what is the most obvious fact:  different people like different things.  Art is subjective, based on personal styles.  Because of subjectivity it's hard enough to compare two artists within the same style.  It becomes much more hard when the artists are almost polar opposite in style.  Then personal taste becomes the dominant factor.

Just so very sad with what

Just so very sad with what happened tonight. I know Adam will get a record contract right away, but he well deserved the American Idol title.

I really have never watched American Idol before but watched a bit this season because of Adam. Now after tonight's results, it is the first and last time I tune in.

I feel so bad for Adam, who clearly wanted to win. As for Kris...he knows he didn't deserve the title.

I think this result could have a more negative than postive rsult on viewership next season. And no matter what is written in the presses tomorrow regarding the under dog come from behind win, there were many millions of people that really wanted Adam to win and i'm sure are scratching their heads in disbelief.

This reminds me of a giant Ponze scheme where the viewers were roped in with a promised huge return, then later hung out to dry.

I knew this was going to happen. American Idol used Adam to breathe life back into their dying show, then served him up for slaughter to the christian lemmings. Talk about pimping.

One bright side is that Adam won't have to record that horrible Kara what's her name's song. Also, Adam is going to steal every live Idol show. Who in his right mind would dare to follow Adam Lambert in a live performance?

For Me...

Kris just doesn't wow me as a performer.  He has a good voice & a quirky, folksy type vibe to him.  He's generic IMO and is similar to other artists out there.  Adam to me has a more powerful voice, a wider vocal range and showed greater versatility with what he did in the season.  He's a bit different to what is out there currently.  Regardless of sexuality or anything like that, I just think he was the best of the season and should have won.  I figured Kris would probably win because he fits into that Idol winner image and I'm sure he will do well.  I just couldn't fake any excitement on him being named the winner.  I wish him all the best though.

I Can Hear The Ridiculous Hyperbole Already

This has nothing to do with anti-gay sentiment - although I'm hearing that already from my friends (both straight and gay) on Facebook.  "OH MY GOD!!! WE WERE ROBBED!!! (really, "we"?).  "HOMOPHOBIC AMERICA!!!" "WE NEED AN IDOL STONEWALL" (how insulting).  Oy, give it a rest.

Simply put, Kris is the more commercially viable Idol.  Do I agree with the outcome? Not really - of course Adam was the better singer, but his overt theatricality (especially his heavy metal wailing) wasn't everyone's cup of tea and often annoyed (although I gave him more "A" grades than any other Idol in my Report Card).  But can you really imagine Adam in the Pop market?  Nope.  To give you an understanding, just listen to his iTunes singles.  It's like night and day.  Like other great live performers (e.g. Patti LaBelle), his recordings merely stunt the voice.

Adam is already a star, in my opinion.  I enjoyed most of Kris' performances and I believe he will succeed where many Idols haven't.

Good for them both ~ both deserve success.  And as thrilled as I am that Gokey didn't get the chance, the real crime is that Allison didn't even have the chance.  SHE should have won.

Probably Melodramatic, but...

I hesitate to say this because I'm afraid I'll be met with "oh, it's just a TV show" or "it's not about singing; it's a popularity contest" or something of the like. I don't want to come off as a tween fangirl, either. I'm a 25-year-old gay man who doesn't twitter and only has a MySpace to keep up with people I'm actually friends with outside of cyberspace.

Tonight made me lose even more faith in people. I have the same feeling I had when "Crash" won the Oscar over "Brokeback Mountain." It's similar to the feeling I had when Prop 8 passed. This isn't just about singing; it is a popularity contest, but in this case, it's not so much about awarding the more popular performer as it is PUNISHING the outsider. The guy who tries hard to be himself and to entertain people. Punish him for the pimping that wasn't his fault or doing, and punish him for daring to be different.

Now, I like Kris, and I love how he and Adam seem to be very close. He's not the problem I have. My problem is with the people who voted. For those who genuinely liked Kris better, that's great. I'm happy for you. I just can't shake the feeling that most of his votes were because he wasn't Adam.

It hurts. It symbolizes just how far we still have to go as a society. We've come a long way, but these constant blows are wearing me down.

I know Adam will be fine, and he didn't need the title, but it's the principle of the thing. He was the one aspect of the show that had people talking all season long. His worst performances were better than most of the other contestants' best performances. He's gracious, humble, not bad on the eyes, and he's worked hard for what he has accomplished. Why should he be penalized for working his butt off trying to make a living in music instead of being undiscovered flipping burgers in Small Town USA? Seriously, that was a topic brought up last night on CNN or some news channel like it... that Adam has too much experience to be in the competition. Ugh.

WHAT???

What are you all thinking?

First of all: "The votes are in and the winner is Kris Allen! Feel free to discuss below, but please don't give away the results in the subject line of your comments since not everyone has watched yet."

What?? You just announced the winner and then said, "Don't give the winner away in your subject line"... duh.

Secondly, EVERYONE should know by now, after all these seasons, that the kindest thing AI can do for any decent contestant is to ensure that they are the 'runner up'. The runner up is not locked in to an AI contract (after the tour is over) and consequently is free to choose their management, engagement deals, and has complete control rearding their own career. Yet, they gain the media attention of being seen on a weekly basis, not to mention the $2000.00/week and the Ford car.

NOT true for poor, pretty Kris. He's stuck under the AI contract until they're done with him. Look at all past AI 'successes'. They are (mostly) the 'losers'. And particularly take a good look at Kelly Clarkson, who was fettered by AI until she was finally able to drop them like a hot potato and record like she wanted to.

You fools who think this has anything to do with gay vs. straight. (especially you, David Ehrenstein - you majorly dumb a**ed comment.) Anyone with a brain would KNOW that the gay man has triumphed in this situation.

Since I don't know the exact length of the option contract each finalist (top 10) signs, your theory may be correct.  However, 19 Entertainment and Freemantle (in concert with RCA/Sony BMG) DO have the option to sign ANY finalist to a recording/management contract and have done so for every runner-up in the show's history.   Adam is by no means scott-free after the tour if they pick up that option, and they absolutely will sign him.

Furthermore, Kelly Clarkson and Clay Aiken had to sue the production companies to get out of their contracts.  They were not simply able to "drop" their contracts - there were heated legal battles (and a lot of legal fees) involved.

I voted for both Adam and Kris to make it to the finale - I didn't care for Gokey's voice at all and I wanted Allison in the final three.  I voted for Adam exclusively in the finale because I thought he gave the superior performances.  Did Kris benefit from Gokey being voted off? Probably.  But he clearly had his own fan base in the weeks running up to the finals.

I like that Kris and Adam are friends.  If the finale were Adam and Gokey - that is oil and water.  It wouldn't have been at all pleasant to watch.

I do think that some of the overexposure Adam had, the frontrunner status, and the judges' pimping hurt him.  Not to mention the show's and Seacrest's handling of the opening montage on the final performance night.  "Guy next-door vs. Guyliner" "Conway vs. California" - WTF?!

I am okay with Kris winning.  He will probably record a decent easy listening album.  I can't wait to see what Adam decides to record.  Goth/Glam rock was always an non-mainstream taste...but I happen to like it. Adam is a fantastic singer.  I don't worry about him.  A little less spotlight right now will be a good thing for him, IMO.

Agree....

....with JWinDenver and JeffreyChrist. The vote total between Kris and Adam last week was less than 1 million votes. How is that being robbed? That has NOTHING to do with homophobia, internalized or otherwise. I am gay. I am much more likely to listen to Kris Allen than Adam Lambert. I decided earlier today that I would be happy with whomever won, and I am. Kris' rendition of "Falling Slowly" is amazing and that alone could be a hit single.

If the vote totals from tonight ever got released and if it was extremely close, would you be complaining about being robbed. Or could it be that maybe, the 15 year old girl from Missouri voted one more time than the 30+ year old gay guy from New York?

And yes, Adam will be HUGE, due to American Idol. Damnit people - an allegedly gay, or at least ambiguous guy sang with KISS!  That alone will give him credibility with some hard core rockers. We might get a legitimate gay ROCK (not pop) star!! Be proud of how far we've come.

Adam was ROBBED.

My take ...

1) First, this contest is called "American Idol." Even though this is, at its core, a signing competition, the show is about finding a musical superstar. Adam had it all: stage presence, the look and a voice that, while theatrical at some points, embodied everything of a rock star. Kris can sing, but he wasn't very memorable until the last stages of the competition. He won't be after this.

2) Adam was consistent with his performances every week. Even though he placed in the bottom two once (which I think was a fluke), he still fared better than Kris in the heats.

3) I think the pink elephant in the room is Adam's flamboyant persona, which might have lost him the votes. I think a big reason why he didn't win is because people thought he was gay. When Danny was eliminated, I think a great deal of his base decided to use their Evangelical votes and help the modern-day Pat Boone win. Conspiracy, maybe, but we'll see.

I am pissed off beyond measure! Adam was ROBBED. He'll have a career regardless, but I'm still disappointed America chose such a mediocre singer as the winner.

I actually feel bad...

...for Kris. He didn't expect to win, and didn't think that he deserved to win. He even made a reference on stage that Adam should have been the winner. That just shows what a decent, classy guy he is. If it had been any other year, Kris could have been a front-runner on the show. I would like to add that I thought Kris looked absolutely amazing in that all black outfit.

I can already hear the conversation on all the talk shows tomorrow: Did homophobia play a part in this? The answer: Probably. On the plus side, openly discussing homophobia in America is always a good thing to expose.

Brokebacked and CRASHed indeed.

This was not a contest to find the best singer, but one who would be digestible for Middle America, and those creatures have spoken.  Tonight, it was easy to hear and see who is the better singer and performer, and it isn't Kris Allen.

Adam Lambert will be fine.  He will follow the paths of Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson and, yes, even Clay Aiken.

So, Kris Allen can take the IDOL title and along with it the burden of having to peddle the most wretched coronation song written in IDOL's 8-year history.  Adam at least has been spared that, thank the Lord.

I'm not surprised

Dial Idol had him as the winner all along. I am disappointed that Adam didn't win, but at least the winner is someone I actually like, unlike Gokey...

Harvey Milk: You gotta give 'em hope.

Me neither

Rest of my family thought he was going to win. It must be nice living with the assumption KA won simply because more people thought he was more talented. I can't help but have my doubts.

I was already "psychoing"

I was already "psychoing" myself that Kris would win. And my colleague who's in the office (I took leave from work for two days for this) was like: "Adam will win!" And when I told her, Kris won, 5 minutes after the whole thing sunk in, she was like: "Huh??? Sheesh...!" And I have a truckload of SMSes from my colleagues who found out the results through the Internet at work, going: "WHAT THE HELL?!!!"

Needless to say, I'm in a happy-unhappy mode as a Kradam fan. I'm a little bit sad that Adam didn't get the title of "American Idol". But that's just it. It's just a title and nothing more. What Adam got most out of this is the exposure and the experience - that's what he needed and that's what he got. And we, as Adam fans, must be happy for that. And I believe that as a fan who admires Adam as a person, he does not wish for any ill wishes from his fans to Kris.

I'm happy that Kris won cos he deserves it as much as Adam does. He is not "the guy who robbed Adam of the win". His "advantage" is the fact that he's more appealing towards the average American viewers. Adam is a polarizing contestant. You either love Adam or you hate Adam. Kris is a lovable person for everyone who's met him in person or seen him on TV. And the fact that he's so humble and so modest and still could go: "But Adam... Adam is just..." He wanted Adam to win. He's a big fan of Adam and we, Kris and Adam fans, know that. He should get the honorary Adam fan button because of that. And just for that, I'm happy. Kris is a deserving Idol because he does have the musical talent and he will have a successful career ahead of him. And as a person, I admire Kris for being really comfortable in his own skin and not afraid of PDA with Adam. It's just wonderful to see especially in a show like Idol.

And I've always wanted to see a Kradam duet and I'm happy that I got to see that. Adam, even though he's a star and Kris' voice faded away underneath that big voice of Adam's, throughout the whole time just looked at Kris and sang WITH him unlike a certain Gokey.  And I may be sounding a little nuts here but I really do hope for a collaboration between Adam and Kris. Those two could do something really epic.

I'm happy for both of them. They are both winners and for the first time, I want to hug Ryan for mentioning that. And right now, all I want to do is wait for both of their albums to come out so I can buy it already.

I Agree with You

I liked both Adam and Kris and both their styles of music. Adam has so much publicity from the show and the whole thing did become the Adam Lambert show with all the lighting and cosutumes, even tonight. He's going to do very well from the show.

Kris was humble to the end. Even when he won, he felt Adam deserved to win. He didn't have to say that. He actually did deserve to win just as much as Adam, IMO.

Kris looked and sounded just right in his duet with Keith Urban and he held his own with Adam at the end. They looked like they were having fun together.

Mad World - indeed

I love Kris but Adam should have won! Silver lining: Kris will not be able to even talk after doing that hurricane song for a few times!

JHud didn't have to win Idol to win an Oscar and a Grammy. You go girl! So do you Adam.

The thing that gets me....

is the "Glam rock is unAmerican!" nonsense we've heard so much of lately.  When did that happen?  I and most of my friends and family have been listening to glam rock since the late 1970s.  When did it go from being "cute people singing cool music" to "unAmerican"?
