Your Monday Morning "Everything Bagel!"

Enjoy this tasty treat designed help to stall the inevitable soul crushingness that is known as the start of the work week. Savor it because as soon as you're done, it begins...

For some reason the all-pachyderm edition of Dieux Du Stade didn't sell very well.

  • In sad but inevitable news, the rash of gay bookstore closings continues with the landmark Lambda Rising in Washington, D.C. Unlike most recent closings, however, this shut down isn't for financial reasons. The owners "decided they would rather close the stores than sell them to a new owner who might change their focus and mission."

Happy Birthday to Margaret Cho, who turned 41 over the weekend.

  • Donal Og Cusack, the Irish hurler who came out in his autobiography, has won an award for "Irish Sports Book of the Year". I know the snarky among you are probably saying "well how many Irish Sports Books could there have been?", but according to the article there were quite a few that didn't even make the shortlist, so it's a high honor indeed.
  • Ugly Betty continues its ratings ennui on Friday night (but at least it beat Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer on The CW). The move to Wednesday can't come soon enough.
  • Say it isn't so! Bisexual singer Danyl Johnson got unexpectedly voted off of the U.K.'s X-Factor last night. He totally should have kissed the male gaffer and mimed having sex with the one of the judges.
  • Office Space star Ron Livingston is suing, well, "someone" for constantly updating his Wikipedia page to claim that he's gay. He also believes the same person is creating bogus Faceplace pages for him stating the same thing. Well, that's what you get for breaking up with someone on a Post-It.

  • Johnny Weir finished third in the Grand Prix Finals in Japan, in what was called an "Olympic-worthy" performance.
  • CNN.com speaks with out Hollywood publicist Howard Bragman and out actors Danny Pintauro and Mitchell Anderson about coming out in Hollywood.
  • Hiram Monserrate, one of the eight Democratic Senators who voted down marriage-equality in NY state, was sentenced to 250 hours of community service, 52 weeks of domestic abuse counseling and three years of probation for assaulting his girlfriend. He and his girlfriend still plan on getting married (after the restraining order against him is lifted), so I guess the sanctity of marriage will be preserved with this couple.
  • Above you can see Rachel Maddow delivering an impassioned monologue about the human rights disaster going on in Uganda, and the culpability of American lawmakers.
  • Guardian.co.uk has an interview with George Michael that is sad and illuminating.
  • The Grammys have always had a dubious track record for me, so the fact that hateful reggae "artist" Buju Banton's latest release has been nominated for Best Reggae Album doesn't surprise me.
  • And here is your sports pics of the week!

Soccer God Cristiano Ronaldo received a foul and penalty for ripping off his shirt after scoring a goal. What has the world come to?

And now the work week begins! We're so so sorry...

GM Interview

You're right Snicks, very sad interview. I've been a fan for about 15 years now and it really worries me to read these things about him. Why do so many musical geniuses have to become like *that*? Probably all the fame and public pressure is just too much. *sighs*

I didn't find it sad in the least

I clicked the link to the GM story and then didn't get to it for a while. I listened to the audio and then read the story and was thinking "wasn't there some note about this being a sad piece, or am I misremembering? What's sad about this?" I guess I can see that interpretation, but it sure wasn't my opinion at all. Because he smokes a lot of pot? I know a lot of people who drink a whole more than it sounds like he smokes. Because his partnership isn't monogamous? If they are happy with their arrangement, what's it to anybody else? He's really rich, and maybe less productive than someone slaving away to get by (or get ahead), but he could be a lot more idle than it seems like he is based this article. Or is it something else that makes it so sad?

But I guess it shouldn't surprise me that someone would find the article sad. We all interpret another's story based on seeing them through our own lenses. And I don't have a problem with that reading, but I do feel a need to voice an alternate opinion. I think some of the quotes (e.g., "But it's great to know that at 46 Im' still very much a changing person" and "most visible traces of self-loathing have gone") are positive affirmations that he's not a sad case at all. I think it's interesting he knows "people want to see me as tragic" (clearly!) but he's pretty unapologetic about just living his life the way he wants to and the judgmental tightasses can tisk tisk and others who find his life.... I don't know, not that their own personal ideal can go ahead and shake their heads over how he's deteriorated. But for me, from this short article, he doesn't seem so bad off. (I don't mean to imply that everyone who sees him as "sad" is a judgmental tightass (but surely *a lot* of his detractors are--and you can see that he is tired of "being buffeted around in the media between liberals and homophobes" that he gets it from both ends, so to speak).

Christiano Ronaldo

Christiano Ronaldo got a red card for something, don't know for what for though.. Anyways, his team had to play with only 10 players left the rest of the match. Red cards in football (soccer) are very bad. The whole team suffers from it..

Cristiano Ronaldo is an egocentric

that only think on himself. He is more worry about showing his abs and being the star of the match than on his own team. He fails a penalty (he cheats, because that wasn't penalty at all), he fails but Benzema make goal, and he didn't celebrate. He didn't congratulate the guy who helps him to make his goal, and finally he get mad and make a fault and receive the red card.

The truth is that i don't care (because i hate Real Madrid), but the guy is a selfish media whore

biotite's picture

need to rant about ronaldo

I just cant satnd the guy and cant haste a chance to state it!

he is dumb beyond words, was absolutly no class and is full of himself.

I really cant get the appeal of him. besides maybe his bank account but i'm not really into that kind of thing... he does have a nice body but not enough to compensate for is ugly face and overall personallaty.

it pains me seeing him being the star of the portuguese team. that is one of the reasons I cant botther myself see their games anymore (that and the fact they are realy sucking lately)

I'm glad i'm not the only one

Ii can't stand the guy either and i don't find him attractive at all. And yes, the guy is very dumb (that unfortunately it's not something strange between athletes).

But what amusses me is the kind of devotion for him between gays, because i've never really hear him something remotely pro-gay (as Bechkam did, for example)

biotite's picture

you're not the only one

I would say must people I know think is a douchebag and dont find him atractive... so i'm wondering who really does? lol

and I dont think you'll ever ear anything pro-gay from him dont think is the type. besides it woyld be really hard for him to say something not stupid.

and beackham is way cooler classier hotter and smater that ronaldo

Ronaldo

Too bad we don't feature Ben Cohen, a rugby player from the UK. He is VERY gay friendly, going so far as to meet with his gay fans, who are legion. He's also a very good looking bear who isn't at all hesitant to show it off. Ben Cohen

Ben Cohen

I think Ben Cohen has been featured on here before.

He does seem like a pretty swell guy. He's my fantasy casting pick for Alcide on True Blood.  I know he's not an actor but I just think he is the exact perfect look!

ronaldo hate

Um ... I've featured Big Ben in lots of my posts since I've been here.

As for Ronaldo, I had no idea people hated him so much. You learn something new every day!

BOOKSTORE CLOSURES

How unfortunate that some Gay bookstores are having to close due to financial or for other business reasons.  It just seems to me that having such physical resources for Gay people is something, that no matter what, needs to be kept operational and intact considering people, young and old, are coming out.  As the act of coming out in itself can be a very frightening process, any resources or educational materials available helps makes that process a lot easier to bear.  While we have the availability of most Gay titles now on-line, that certainly does not help Gays who do not have computer access or for that matter the computer technology due to lack of education or other environmental situations.  I really don't think that losing these bookstores is something that the Gay Community can afford to lose especially now in this day and era when we are gradually and finally coming into our own.

Now I'm bummed....

I've never been to the Lamda Rising in DC, but am a frequent shopper at their Rehoboth store.  :-(  It's a great store, and I'm really going to miss it!

I remember standing in front of it and wanting to go in, but a friend of mine told me it was mainly for gay men and that i would look like an idiot in there....so i've never been inside the store. just have always walked past it.

I think Hilary Clinton has...

I think Hilary Clinton has spoken out about the Uganda situation...but has Obama?

..and yes, i only ask because he says he is a fierce advocate. (which i dont believe for one second, but eh....)

How many genocides does it take until its no longer a heartbreak

If I remember right (which I might not), Secretary Clinton only spoke out against the Uganda legislation (and you know, impending genocide), when she was asked a question about it. President Obama has yet to say anything.

However, Pam's house had an interesting perspective on the silence of our own government:

Maddow is great

I'm always so impressed by Rachel Maddow and I'm glad she's staying on this story.  I haven't seen a whole lot of coverage of it in the mainstream meida.

Lamda Rising DC

This is both a sad and telling event for our community. As we gain acceptance more and more and build online communities that aren't related to porn, our physical gathering places are disappearing.

Lamda Rising DC had a particular role in my coming out. Being a Northern VA boy, it was a place I was curious about and a place I feared. If I went in, I was gay. If I went in, I knew I would discover something. If I went in and went to the back racks, someone might discover me handsome. In the end the place ended up being an early place of pride when I walked through the door without hesitation and bought books, calendars, or other items without embarassment or fear. It was the first place I held hands with a boy in a public place I think and I didn't think twice about it. It was a right of passage to enter this place and sadly that is coming to an end.

But, this is not just indicitive  our community, it is true of all printed media at this time. We are evolving as a society to online resources and purchasing. The issue is truly, the right of passage part. How do we as a community make our community present physically in our community beyond just being ourselves without fear in our neighborhoods? Do we gather together and create say what Rehoboth Beach has, a community center that acts as a information hub and meeting location for area GLBT people? Do we invest in something that pushes assembly rather than the written word? And what about our youth? How do we reach them without the accusation of recruitment? We really need to think about what we need to do after we reach the mountain too in our march to rights.
