Your Monday Morning "Everything Bagel!"

Enjoy this tasty treat designed help to stall the inevitable soul crushingness that is known as the start of the work week. Savor it because as soon as you're done, it begins...

Well at least she won't be late for work.

  • Let's kick things off with great news. The city of Houston has now become the largest U.S. city to elect an openly gay mayor, as Annise Parker won Saturday's election with 53% of the vote. Below you can see the Mayor Elect talking about the anti-gay rhetoric and conservative smears that went on in the last stage of the campaign.

  • In even more great news, murder-music Grammy nominee Buju Banton is currently sitting in a federal lockup in Miami, charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than five kilos of cocaine. Because I'm a nice person, I will charitably say no more. Except this ... MWA-HA-HA CHORTLE CHORTLE GUFFAW!

Out Mark Feehily performs a duet with Donna Summer at the rehearsals for the Nobel Peace Prize Concert

  • In news that can only be described as "inevitable", Adam Lambert may have been banished from ABC's New Year's festivities, but he'll be rockin' another New Year's party.
  • Below you can see Tom Ford interviewed by Tina Brown about the skepticism he encountered in trying to bring A Single Man to the screen.

  • Last week we mentioned that gay superhero Northstar would be getting a boyfriend in an upcoming issue of Nation X, and now the first few preview pages have been released.
  • You have to give certified nutjob Scott Lively some credit for sticking to his convictions about the Uganda anti-gay bill. "It does not emphasize rehabilitation over punishment and the punishment that it calls for is unacceptably harsh. However, if the offending sections were sufficiently modified, the proposed law would represent an encouraging step in the right direction." What a compassionate "Christian".
  • DaytimeConfidential.com has an interview with Nick Rodriguez about his bashing storyline on One Life To Live and what it was like moving from Broadway to the soap world.

Ben Rakestrow

  • Above you can see Ben Rakestrow, a British soldier serving in Afghanistan, who came out to his fellow soldiers a year ago, and whose story should be required reading for anyone still supporting DADT.

Who do you think rocked it?

  • Advocate.com has an interesting piece about trans actress Candis Cayne and how she may have been screwed over by Star magazine's photoshop.
  • Finally, there's just one day left to enter a bid for the most awesome item ever auctioned off. Not only do you get a guided tour of the One Life to Live studio with Scott Evans and Brett Claywell, but the proceeds go to the True Colors Fund. (t/y to reader ichorous for the tip)
  • And here is your sports pics of the week!

And now the work week begins! We're so so sorry...

Great news

The news about Norstar makes me want to get into comics. I've always wanted to (I've gotten into manga a few months ago because of a pal which is the same thing) Mayabe I'll give it a whirl. I hope they release this on the PSP because then I'd definitely have it.

Oh, and Mark Freehily is adorable.

Good luck!

The problem I've always had with getting into new comics is that everything is so confusing at first until you get a feel for the characters and learn about their histories, powers, etc.

Northstar, for instance, was a championship skater who used his powers to cheat and win prizes before joining Canadian superhero group Alpha Flight with his half-crazy twin sister Aurora. He came out of the closet in that series, got "killed" by Wolverine a few years ago (he got better), then joined the X-Men as a part-time member and teacher. A lot of backstory, and his is one of the simpler X-Men origins to explain!

Having said that, if you give it some time and do some research (the internet would have been a godsend when I was getting into comics in the 80's) then comics can become an addiction!Good luck, man.

Skier

Northstar was a champion skier, not skater.

Gays in Comics

If you're going to check out a comic because of the gay couple, there are much better recommendations than Northstar.  Wiccan and Hulkling from Young Avengers, and Rictor and Shatterstar from X-Factor, both feature gay couples in which both members are part of the core team.  And don't relegate the boyfriend to a miniseries of filler short stories. Also, Apollo and Midnighter in Authority, although both the characters themselves (psycho killer superheroes) and the quality of the last few years worth of Authority stories, leave something to be desired.

Kish Auction

Man I wish I had an extra $5k for this. I love these guys.

Oh, and a note to Scott and Brett: Stop doing guest stints on other TV shows, it never ends well for your characters! After seeing Scott in Fringe's S01E06 and Brett in Friday nights' episode of Dollhouse (omg!), I had to go rewatch some Kish scenes on Youtube to see them smiling again.

Yikes.

Kish auction

Hey, if they really want to up the amount of money for the charity, they should promise that your tour, which includes watching a taping of the show, would include seeing a Kish love scene!

Too bad I don't have a spare 5 grand lying around. I would love to meet both of them, and get a look at the studios.

Hey Kitty

Kitty, how about we go halves together in the Kish auction? I can't do it myself. After you help me get Brett into the trunk of my car, I'll help you with Scott.

Annise Parker

I am from Houston and am so proud that we elected the right candidate for mayor. I know people think of Houston as an ultra conservative George Bush loving christian right bastion city deep in the heart of Texas but we are a very culturely diverse and international city as well. And we are also a highly Democractic city, we went for Kerry and Obama in the last elections.

What I loved about Annise Parker's campaign was that it didn't make an issue of her sexuality (although the opposition did). She was the candidate for the entire city representing us all not just the gay community, but she also never forgot where she came from and the significance of her eventual win.

I'm so proud to be a Houstonian!

"British servicemen and

"British servicemen and women now march at Gay Pride in uniform."

That makes me so genuinely proud.

Mark Feehily, smiling? If there wasn't a picture, I wouldn't believe it.

And the woman in the clocks: they all say different times!

Deiblers.

I find that photo kind of hypnotic. Their builds and features are so similar they could be twins, but their hair and skin color are so different, it's hard to believe they're related. (I'm assuming from the name and physical resemblance that they're brothers.)

Gays in military

I really don't see the big fuzz. Gays are allowed to serve openly in almost every Western nation in the world, except USA. Why does it have to be so different in USA? The arguments from the right wing nut cases are stupid, that it could set the whole troop in danger. Gay men and women serve openly in many countries and there has not been any major problems yet.

I know  that here in Norway the state works actively for gay men and women to feel as comfortable in the militrary as possible. And many gay men and women tell about positive experiences in the military.

One last thing to add, isn't it kinda ironic that two countries one might consider to be thirld world countries, Uruguay and Argentina, legalized gay people to serve openly in the military before USA. Isn't USA supposed the be land of the free, but I guess discriminating against a minority group is ok?

Style Stealing

Isn't the Deibler brother on the right wear a suit made out of remnanents from Candis and Mariah's gown?  Now ask me who wears it better.  Actually all three knock it out of the park.

That's all I am saying...
