"Big Brother 10": The good, the bad, and the evicted
The eviction ceremony on CBS's Big Brother 10 was aired last night, and on the chopping block were gay rodeo champ Steven and Catholic school teacher Dan. Excuse me ... just finishing up my slashfic. I still can't figure out Steven. On the one hand, he made those inexcusable racial and religious remarks, and he lamented the fact that he's only read one book in his life (I guess the twist ending of Green Eggs and Ham traumatized him into illiteracy). On the other hand, after watching the After Dark show, and some of the live feeds over the last week, there's another side to him. He can come across as warm, funny, and compassionate, and he did have some very meaningful conversations with Dan. In fact, Dan said that he came into the house with judgmental attitudes about gays, and getting to know Steven has changed him. If that's true, then maybe something good has come out of this season.
The only other housemate of note is resident lunk-a-hunk Jessie, who won the "Head of Household" and was responsible for nominating both Steven and Dan. He's also hilariously self-absorbed, and it wouldn't surprise me if he suddenly started speaking about himself in the third person. And like many a Big Brother housemate before him, it didn't take long for NSFW PICS of him to come out. See who went home after the break.
Well, as expected, Steven was voted off. It was close though, 9-0 (okay, maybe not so close). Unfortunately, when he was giving his final speech before the votes, he ended it with the command, "Suck it, Bitches!", so I'm not sure that endeared him to anyone (it did, however, make my night, because it was live, and host Julie Chen looked absolutely abhorred). I guess that does it for this season of Big Brother. With no more gay housemates, there's no reason for us to cover it, unless someone comes out (which isn't likely, Jessie's pics notwithstanding). For fans of the show, are you sad to see Steven go, or are you breathing a sigh of relief? Submitted by on Thu, 2008-07-24 08:52. |

Aw
Poor Gay Steve. Gay Steve Shall Miss him. (If anyone didn't get that my name is Steve as well)
I find the whole "disrespecting Jessie" thing as a sham. Either Jessie had ulterior motives (AKA getting all Brian's Allies out) or he's just really that shallow. I vote for the former. But the latter does have some leeway with me.
The "Suck it Bitches" portion amused me though.
I Am The Burrito Queen - Me
Awww
Well, I'll console poor Steven. He and I would honestly probably get along very well. Haha. And, I'm only two states over! Hell, he has to pass through Arizona to get to Texas from filming, he can stop by my place.
New New Gay
I enjoyed Steven. He introduced straight America to the Redneck Gay. What with all this talk about the Old Gay and the New Old Gay, I enjoyed seeing a type of gay you definitely do not see every day. The best way to dispel the stereotype of the urban, swishy, style-obsessed gay is to expose straight people to every variation of the gay male...even if some of the specimens are less than perfect. At least he was honest about who he was.
Also, I felt sorry for Steven. Having your memory wiped and being illiterate must be difficult. It does not hurt that he was so adorable. I just wanted to take him home and protect him, like a little lost puppy.
I liked Steven. Not overlooking race/religious remarks
While the live feeds are mostly the equivalent of dead air, Steven seems like a fun guy who lead the house on a mass electric slide dance off, gave the should be funny but is not Renny a lap dance, made food for everyone, and was never one to back up from a "youthful" game of who can be the most gross to make others laugh. He also had a game brain, which he should have started using the second that Brian was voted out.
I would not put him in any type of gay pedestal and would argue that the gay media should not give him on his offensive comments as part of a broad interview. I would expect any black-centric media outlet to do the same with Libra or any of the other people who represent any minority as I think that it provides the perfect avenue to bring all prejudices to the forefront and possibly changing a few minds along the way about what is not OK under any circumstance.
When it comes to the show itself, since I see all of the guests as equally foul when it comes to issues to hot-button issues, and I did not see any of Steven's comments what was packaged for the official show on CBS, he seemed to be one of the few people who did not annoy the living ____ out of me or don't even notice as they are truly filler. I missed most yesterday's show due to weather in the DC area and want to hear him say his good-bye message.
I assume that Julie did not ask him about his comments. I did catch the final messages from other house-members and it seemed like he was very well liked as even Jesse liked how Steven listened to his egocentric ways. I am calling for Kathy Griffin to add a certain body-builder who may or may not live in the BB House to her The Hills hit list. I am not going to name any names... Suck it up BItches
Jessie is like all those self-obsessed body Nazis so prevelent today as though his fabulous looks make up for his self-loathing and clear inadequacies in dealing with reality. Mr. Natural Iowa is going to look like his father one day and then how will he deal with the realities. He said he was glad to work out with Steven so he could be a role model for the handsome cowboy. Yeah, he's got perseverance at a gym but what else does he have, so far he's shown us zip. The man is a little p***k with a big chip on his shoulder. Good luck if you don't win the $500,000. You are no motivational expert. As a writer he is literacy challenged. As a model, maybe he could get the STAMP OUT ILLITERACY campaign.
I'll miss Steven
Steven was a nice, trustworthy, loyal guy, my favorite Big Brother houseguest ever. His friendships with Keesha, Angie, Dan, and Brian were all great to watch. He was a lot of fun with sock puppets, late night stories, porno password, and tons and tons of movie quotes on the feeds. Also, it turns out from post-show interviews that the "colored girl" remark was a reference to something Jerry said and he himself did not think of Libra as "that colored girl." I did think he made some ignorant jokes and remarks, but overall, I don't think he is a racist, and also houseguests covered their heads with their pillows to show their disagreement when he was being inappropriate.
Steven made an impact on the Big Brother house in the short time he was there. I hope he goes on to bigger and better things!
