"Big Brother 10"'s Steven: A riddle, wrapped in a mystery, spitting tobacco (SPOILER)

I honestly don't know what to make of this guy anymore. Steven, the out rodeo rider, has made this season of Big Brother fascinating to watch so far

But I'm torn as to whether I want him to stay on the show, or become a bad memory. On the one hand, if he were to eventually be voted off, I can stop watching these obnoxious people, and it will mean he won't be able to embarrass himself any further.

On the other hand, he's not dull. He is continually entertaining, and becoming increasingly — albeit horrifyingly — watchable. You already know about his comments regarding housemate Libra, but he also wondered that if Jews control Hollywood, does that mean they control Big Brother, and if the housemates say anything anti-Semitic, will they suddenly disappear from the house? (Unfortunately, this clip has been taken down, and I can't find it anywhere.)

He and fellow housemate Dan began a Bible-study group (to the confusion and amusement of the other housemates), and Steven told the story of an unfortunate accident while bull riding (involving a bull's hoof and that most tender part of a man's anatomy)

He also had a long heart to heart with Dan about not remembering much about his childhood, and the fact that he's never read a book in his life (well, one, about a fellow rodeo rider). You can see that clip after the break, and find out "SPOILERS" about about the upcoming broadcast.

Well, Steven has been nominated for eviction, and unless someone uses the magical Power of Veto on him (which isn't likely), he'll be going home next Wednesday.

    My Thoughts

My first thought on reading this is just because someone is gay doesn't mean they lack the same prejudices that exists in the rest of society. The gay community both individually and as a community is a reflection of the greater society.

Sometimes, like with this guy, they aren't so subtle. And other times, especially if you are a person of color in the gay community, it can occur in subtle ways.

Often times, we want to think gay=evolved. It doesn't. No more than the fact that Clarence Thomas and I sharing the same race means he is enlightened. It just means share common physical characteristics.  That's it.  The same is true of this person. I imagine if you asked him he probably doesn't even believe he has any prejudices.

    Yes, I agree...

...with everything you said, Craig. It's just such a shame that with so little gay representation on tv that when you do get a gay man on a show, he has to be a trogladite. But then, so are the others, at least on the BB shows that I have seen. Unfortunatley, most of America won't put this equation together. All they see is a gay that says creepy things.

I say we take the warning labels off everything and let nature take it's course.

    Weird and Sad

I have not watched any of this show, but from all reports Big Brother really is exposing straight audiences to a wide variety of gay personalities.  They are not all the well dressed and high culture urban gays you see on TV.  They can be just as sexist, racist, or stupid as any straight guy.

All that being said, watching the above clip really made me feel sad for Steven.  I know his life has been more blessed than most people around the world, but how could someone have so little memory of their childhood.  I can remember every single one of my teachers from pre-school on.  I can remember birthdays and other holidays, and have a pretty good memory of my life for almost every year I have been alive.

Steven's memory loss reminds me of a plot line out of Desperate Housewives.  Maybe his parents killed the real Steven and adopted him from a Ukrainian orphanage...or maybe the whole thing is an act to gain sympathy.  Whatever.

Please No Spoilers (esp. without warnings) ~

I did not read the full post, but I wanted to remind some that it's been practice to place spoiler warnings when it comes to most of these types of posts. I think that it's particularly important when it's information that won't air to the vast majority of the audience until Sunday night when the show airs.

I don't want to sound like a _____ but it totally kills any suspense that the meat and potatoes of the show airs. Thanks in advance for my unedited frustration as I am sure that I could communicate the massage in a more constructive manner.

    I changed it..

Although i don't know how this can be considered a real "spoiler" when it's been on all the official live feeds, the big brother after dark show, and every big brother site. i suspect that the vast majority of fans will already know that he's up for eviction when they tune in sunday night.

but, i apologize if i let the cat out of the bag too soon.

Come on snicks... Call it what it is and move on

This website is consistent on how it handles these issues as exemplified by big bold warnings in almost all results related recaps/bits. Your readers deserve the right to determine for themselves what constitutes a real "spoiler" and that allows you to write about almost anything that you are privy to without any worry. The best of all worlds.

Why even split hairs instead of learning and moving on as we've all been there? While totally irrelevant to the protocol, I totally disagree with the assertion that "the vast majority of fans will already know" this key element of this show. Is it on the official CBS web-site in any respect? I assert that if you were recapping Sunday's show for any site, your Monday entry would begin with a spoiler alert as to what you've already revealed here days before the official airdate.

And was that really an honest apology? I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, but there is no need for one as it was only intended as a heads up for now and the future so that all readers/contributors can be on an equal playing field.

Reality show like Big Brother is not base on talent like singing

or dancing. The concept of the show attracts certain personalities. If not, the casting producers make sure of that. The more abrasive the personalities the more drama it will create for the show. Confining a group of different personalities in a control setting over 3 months can certainly do that. There's rarely any redeeming qualities among the houseguests under this circumstances.

Actually, it was an honest apology.

but thank you for giving me "the benefit of the doubt".

Your condescending tone aside, you are absolutely right. I shouldn't have assumed that it wouldn't be regarded as a spoiler. This is my first time trying to navigate through the big brother show/internet jungle, and i forgot that a lot of people prefer to follow the action on tv, rather than online. From now on, i'll be sure to include the spoiler warning...and i do apologize again.. it was my mistake.

    He's read only ONE book?

Not even the Bible, and he wants to start a Bible study group? Ok, I don't watch this crap, and I'm not going to start now, but I don't care how "sexy" a guy is, if they don't read, that's a total deal-breaker. No wonder he's a moron.

    Wow.

I was aware of most of this already, but stunned on the "never read a book" thing.

Sadly, the bigoted comments from a gay man don't surprise me one bit, having witnessed some truly eye-popping examples of this first hand over the years.

    BB10... *sigh*

I never thought this show would make it this far, I didn't think anyone actually watched it.

The only thing I can say about the show is, while the first season was mildly interesting with vastly different house guests from various walks of life, the show turned into the Real World-like casting practices of only picking pretty people 99% of the time, from people who are usually wannabe models and actors just looking to get on tv.

I don't think we'll find any positive gay reinforcement from this show, just like I don't think there's much in the way of any positive societal reinforcement from any other group on the show. You have a house full reality-camera-whores, what do you expect?
