AfterElton Briefs: "Glee" Will Experience The Big "O", Kathy Griffin's DADT Rally Ends Unexpectedly, Gandalf Returns, and More!

Plus Miley vs. the haters, scandal in the workroom on Project Runway, and happy birthday Vanessa Williams!

Mega Super Happy Birthday to Vanessa Williams, who turns 47 today.

  • Yesterday we told you that teen queen Miley Cyrus's favorite show was RuPaul's Drag Race. She also told Parade Magazine that the reason she canceled her Twitter account is because of all the hate mail she received after tweeting her support of marriage equality. Don"t let the haters get you down, Miley! I said "haters" because that's what the kids say these days. I'm hip like dat.
  • Spurf™ is reporting that April 7 is a day that all humanity will mark on their calendar. Why? Four words ... Glee meets Oprah Winfrey.

  • Scandal strikes the workroom! Below you can see a sneak peek of tonight's Project Runway. My beloved Ping and Jesse are gone, so I'm not as invested in this season as I was a few weeks ago, but at least Anthony is still around to keep things lively.

  • Below you can see a couple of pics from the DADT Rally today in D.C., which started with Kathy Griffin at the Freedom Plaza, and ended with out servicemember Dan Choi handcuffed to the White House gate. You can follow the whole story over at Towleroad.

  • Kevin Sessums talks to Dame Edna and Michael Feinstein about the opening of their Broadway show All About Me.
  • I've never participated in a clinical trial (I've always been afraid of hearing "pleasant taste, some monsterism"), but It irks me to find out that I may be turned down because I'm gay.
  • Finally, Sir Ian Mckellen has confirmed that filming begins this July on The Hobbit, with the icon reprising his role as Gandalf.

And today's Briefs are brought to you by...

Hmmm, this is thought-provoking...

i'm surprisingly ambivalent about this chaining thing -- wait, don't hate!  let me explain:  first, he's chained himself to the wrong building (should have been the Capitol).  second, he co-opted the HRC's crowd when he wasn't invited to speak.  third, civil disobedience works best when it's not just for show; i.e. something is obstructed (a gate or door), someone loses money (a bus boycott), and/or when it's a demonstration capable of longevity (he had to know he'd get cut off in about 5 mins., should've brought hand-cuffs for the whole class).  altogether, this reads more "Look at me!" than civil disobedience, although i applaud his gumption.  i just think some more planning would have behooved the good Lt.

i mean no offense, so please don't be angry  -- i'm trying to be constructive with my criticism.  i understand a lot of people have been unhappy with HRC recently, but confrontations like this seem to put us at cross-purposes.

Choi

I've always supported Dan but he has violated a rule that every service person has to abide by.

"They may attend partisan and nonpartisan political meetings or rallies as spectators when not in uniform."

He went from being a spectator to activist wearing his uniform. They now have a valid reason to discharge him." I salute his service but disobeying the UCMJ he has given  a valid discharge reason to the army."

As a retired member of the Air Force it saddens me to see that he thought he had to cross that line.

i was going to say something about the uniform thing, but wasn't 100% sure of the rule.

and thanks for your service.

Excellent points, both of you guys

I believe Dan is a national hero; as such, I want him to make decisions which will benefit him and show him in the best light until this stupid policy is overturned.  Though I think he has the heart of a lion, I'm not 100% certain that his process with this is going to result in maximum payoff.  Same thing with the folks pushing the ENDA bill in Pelosi's office and whatnot; D.C. is focused ONLY on the health care vote till Sunday, so though this is still an admirable gesture, I don't know if it's a really productive one.

Flashback: when Matthew Shepard died, I was talking with a bunch of people online about doing something to honor him that would have concrete political payoffs.  I thought we should organize a series of rallies at every state capitol on the same day at the same time, so that even if we didn't have a national hate-crimes bill we could at least engender some local, state-by-state protections.  A bunch of people told me I was misguided, etc. (along with some less-nice phrases), and that going to D.C. was "the ONLY" way to honor Matthew and get results.  Well, a bunch of them did in fact go to D.C....and Clinton was right in the middle of the Lewinsky scandal, and no one cared about them.  Media play was minimal, and the Dems were all focused on trying to avoid a political bloodbath in November.  (Note: when given a choice between doing The Right Thing and re-election, it's darn hard to find a politician who'll opt for Plan A.)

Note: I'm definitely NOT saying that Dan should sit in jail till Monday after the Health Care vote hopefully happens; I'm just saying that trying to get the media and the public's attention is often a battle, and though this caused a teeny splash, I'm not sure it's going to result in the tidal wave that we REALLY need for "DADT" to be swept away.  I also definitely don't want people to spin it as counter-productive.

Dan Choi

When I first heard about this, this morning I was shocked. I met Dan and he's a really interesing guy, but to chain himself to the White House was a little exterme for me. I like the guy I do, but doing this was a step too far.

BTW- There's rallies all up and down CA to demand the release of Lt. Dan Choi, Capt. Jim Pietrangelo and Robin McGehee who were arrested today at the White House.

Extreme is what its going to take

I was USN trained Air Traffic Controller. I was outed during my 2nd year, was already trained and ready to do my job. FAA would not hire me because of my Administrative under Honorable discharge. I have been fired many times for suspicion of being gay(butch rode a hog, worked construction, but did not act like a dog about women on jobs sites, but did my job very well)

I was outed by 2 different people, neither of whom really knew me. One had gotten into legal trouble, murder and another just a jealous queen.

I had no recourse whatever either go quietly or go to the brig.

Capt Pietangelo is already out so the uniform thing is not unlawful for him. Lt Choi is on his way out so the uniform is kind of in limbo.

He is trying to keep his honor wtf is wrong with that?

I lost all my earned benefits etc as he will too and he is in longer than I was. He has served in combat.

This lawful order by a cop is bs period.

I have had face downs with cops and kreestians who tried to burn my house down with a cross made from my own lumber and several other Evilgelicals not least D James  Kennedy and Anita Brayant(sic) who was trying to drum up a lynch mob in Selma Al many years ago. The only way we will find our equal rights is to be as much the A--holes as needed, but be better at it and keep the language clean and NEVER back down.

Do you think we would have ever gotten as far as we have being polite little sissies?

Remember ActUP? I am long term HIV survivor and I still have to advocate for myself sometimes it takes me being a first rate hard a$$ Biatch to get the treatment I need. I intend to stick around til there is a cure.

I have been pos since just just I left the Navy in 82(no one had an inkling then what hiv was let alone in places like Alabama).

I have buried all of my friends except for about 4. In Apr/Mar 95 i went to 15 funerals with the Phelps kkklan protesting at a number of them.

I have watched over and over as long term couples lost everything they had worked for and when one died, even with deeds and wills the survivor be tossed to the curb by the blood family of the dead one.

We have to stand up on all fronts. Things are better now, but by no means equal. My partner of 14 yrs and I now live in rural NC, I have to travel 50 miles each way for medical care. There is no local dr that will treat me and we cannot afford to live in the city because of costs because I am on SSD. We have had trouble at hosp when I was sick and they kept him out , even with living will and health care surrogate/power of attorney. He had to step over the line in order to be there since I was nearly unconcious and not able to answer questions about allergies and conditions and one hospital even threw me out 'because we don't treat AIDS here'.

If I were not disabled and broke with no transport I would have been up there with Choi and Pietrangelo.

Why do I care

if the cast of Glee shows up on Oprah?  Is she another gay icon that no one sent me the card about? How come she is not up for Gay-of-the Week?

Clinical trials

As someonme that has to deal with this on a semi-regular basis, clinical trials are constructed by comitte, by scientists, and then reviewed separately (often by multiple, other, separate comittees) before they are approved. Such approvals must not vioplate multiple levels of rules, most of which are designed to *maximize* the diversity of the population study and require significant, *scientifically-based* justification of limitations. It's very uncommon for there to be justification to remove homosexuals from the participtant/donor groups. It does occasioanlly happen when the physiological/psychological differences in gay men and women would cloud the primary objective of the study. And to be quite honest, some of the exclusion of homosexuals is due to the inability to get enough self-identified participants to create a statistically significant sample size; being one in ten can be a mathematical obstacle (on top of all of the other ones). Also, many GBLT people do not participate in clinical studies and/or are not willing to self-identify. Most studies are quite literally required to reflect gender and racial/cultural distributions of the US.

I agree that's not the right way for Dan Choi to send the

message but unlike Kathy Griffin, he is not there to make a reality show out of it. Don't get me wrong I love Kathy Griffin. I sensed Dan Choi 's frustration and lack of resources and vehicles to take down DADT once and for all. I'm not the dedicated soldier while doing my job defending my country that ended up being fired because I'm gay. The irony is not miss that he was arrested for chaining himself to the White House. Call it a public disruption. What kind of crime did the military commit by getting rid of someone who's language skill is highly needed to defend the country during a war against terrorism?

Lt Dan CHoi

Sorry but Dan Choi is a true American Patriot in the tradition of those activists in our history who stood up and took action. Dan and Cpt. Jim Pientrangelo acted in the American tradition of civil disobedience.  I think I speak for many of us who would follow Lt Dan into battle. I had a friend who was there when this all happened and Dan LED the assembled crowdto action and made a stronger statement then any celebrity (no offense to Kathy of course) could have. This isn't the time for hollow rallies. It is time for action and a one-on-one exchange with our elected officials to let them know we are people and we deserve to have the "special right" of EXCLUSION removed and be granted the SAME rights of anyone else.

Oh and for those commenting about military protocol, I thought one of the major tenents of that was telling the truth and having honor in that. The shame that Lt Dan Choi has protested about this whole time is that the military establishment and Congress itself violated their part in that trust. Don't forget that.

i don't think you read our posts

i'm not going to get in a ratings-war with you, as you hand out 1-stars. but i don't think you read the posts above. (also 5 stars =/= agree, and 0 =/= disagree.)

it's fine for you to have another opinion, but i don't think anyone above was offensive, mean, or even illogical. and contrary to your admonition, we didn't "forget" anything.

1) no one is questioning Choi's service.

2) absolutely NO ONE is questioning that DADT is WRONG.

3) no one is saying what he did isn't civil disobedience.

what we are questioning is its effectiveness and timing:

1) crashing a rally isn't the same as holding your own.

2) when DADT is being supported by those who argue that it derails "good order and discipline," having active service-members chain themselves to the WH is dubiously persuasive.

3) as civil disobedience, it's not really in the "American Tradition," of the Montgomery boycott or the Birmingham Campaign. why?

     a) because it wasn't of sufficient scale,

     b) nothing was impeded or disturbed,

     c) it didn't directly address the cause being advanced.

this site is known for its positive, mature communication, so please don't start a flame war here.

Addison Dewitt's picture

Excuse me?

Um... I rated it as I saw. I really am amazed that you can say you don't want to start anything and then flip out a post like you did?

I expressed my opinion and I rated without malice.

You questioned his methods and I disagreed. It's as simple as that. I didn't say you questioned his patriotism. I said that I think he is an American patriot.

I am not starting a "flame war" here. I ask any regular posters to this site to vouch for me and how I post on this site. If anything your response to my comment is the true match to any fuse.

you're projecting

i wrote nothing that could reasonably be construed as offensive or even angry.

if your writing needs someone to vouch for it, then i don't think you're communicating your point.

and just because you disagree with a post doesn't mean you have to give it a poor rating.

Military Service

One of the things members of the military forgo when they join the military is a bit of the freedom that they defend. They have a different set of rules called the Uniform Code of Military Justice that they must abide by. These rules limit some of the freedoms (like freedom of speech... soldiers cannot disobey any order from a superior it can land them in jail and out of the military... whereas you as a civilian can certainly disobey an superior but unless it's something illegal you won't be going to jail or having a black mark for the rest of your life).

And as far as the trust issue, again I say HIS OBAMA"S TERM OVER YET?. If it isn't fast enough for you, you need to CHILL OUT. Yes some unfortunate souls are going to be forced out, but change is never all at once, its always a bit at a time. Learn from history.
