AfterElton Briefs: Beauty Pageant Smackdown, Gays Protesting Gays, and More!

Tom Ford and Neil Patrick Harris attend the GQ "Men of the Year" awards last night in Hollywood.

Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear. Yes, we're serious.

  • Via Towleroad comes this horrifying report about a gay high school student chased and beaten by a gang of classmates. The kicker? He told the school principal and bus driver it was going to happen ... and they did nothing to stop it.

And a partridge in a pear tree

  • I know people are getting up-in-arms about Mariah Carey's list of demands to turn on some Christmas lights, and it's too bad they didn't ask me. All I would have required would be a case of Yoo-Hoo, a Baja Beef Chalupa from Taco Bell, and maybe a lap dance from one of those Twilight guys.

  • Above you can see Ava Simoes, the winner of Miss Brazil Gay 2009, as she celebrates her crowning. Unfortunately the runner-up was ... none too pleased. I hope this was staged, but I fear it's not. Seriously, who does she think she is ... a female soccer player?

And today's Briefs are brought to you by...

    Apparently...

...if we go by Brazilian TV, we should all join hands and sing a chorus of "Dancing Queen."

    Thank you!

I decided it was time; I'm in a new phase in my life and, I'll tell you, I've really become a huge fan of Scott, how proudly open and honest he is. And, of course, so incredibly sexy!

    Oh, snicks!

Maybe we can get Minnesota's very own world-renowned dance team of Step & Fetchik to give the Twilight hunk of your choice lap dance lessons. ;Þ

    I'm with Mariah Carey

I've been to the Westfield shopping centre (it's London's latest mega mall).

The idea of seeing 100 doves crapping over everything is the only thing that would get me back there. Also, it's one of those weird things that while black cats are thought unlucky in the US, they're considered lucky in the UK - and white cats are regarded with superstitious suspicion. The picture of 20, unlucky white cats going feral in the shopping centre and trying to hunt down the colony of doves is delicious.

    Carey is a marketing genius.

She's come up with a tooth-and-claw reason to combine shopping in a vast, impersonal mall with a proper Animal Planet experience. I'm not a Carey fan, but I feel like going out and buying her latest album. But I'll only do it in Westfield if they give in to her entirely reasonable demands.

    Don't forget the Keystone Cops

Add Butterfly confetti falling, Rolls Royce driving her, 80 security guys "guarding" her and you have a scene from the Keystone Cops waiting to happen.

    A Suggestion regarding "This Guy"

Can we at least get a face pic so we can decide if we want to click through? I'm still seething that we don't get to see him on the main page.

Do you get an electric shock through your mouse...

...if you click through and don't like the picture?

Otherwise, I'm not really understanding the level of discontent regarding the location of the "This Guy" pics.

Let's just be thankful snicks and Ed have not decided to call a truce to their Briefs guy one-upmanship war.

    Yes,

I melt into a puddle of dispair, wailing, "Why? Why? Why?"

    Doubtful

Since that would require them to make the extra effort to go in and crop out the face pic.  And let's be honest, you're in kind of a minority being so bothered by the extra click.

Yeah, if they put it up to a vote, I'd probably vote the old way.  But it's also not a big deal for me to click.

    UGH

Via Towleroad comes this horrifying report about a gay high school student chased and beaten by a gang of classmates. The kicker? He told the school principal and bus driver it was going to happen ... and they did nothing to stop it.

^ I read he was hit with a metal pipe. i wonder if the kids had the pipe before the attack? tsk.

I sadly don't know what the principal or bus driver could've done. warned the classmates not to beat him up? yes, but maybe they would've done it another day.

after reading the story about that 15 year old lit on fire, it's obvious kids will stoop at nothing these days to hurt someone else. I just don't know a solution. people say you can't take action on something that MIGHT happen...what if the principal/bus driver simply thought "ok, this might happen...but it might not...we don't want to get in trouble for doing something to a group of students when there is not proof.."

I'm not defending what these adults did (or in this case, didn't do)...i just can't find how they would've stopped it. maybe that day, they could've...but in this day and age, i believe the classmates would've found another day, another way.

*sigh* i only see a problem, but i can't figure out a solution. hopefully someone can/will.

    This is boy-thought

If the school pincipal or bus-driver had intervened before to say the behaviour was unacceptable, there's a chance that the boys wouldn't have done what they did. The gang would have been presented with a clear set of possible consequences. They'd have understood that the poor persecuted boy had access to another power-source outside his own physical being. They'd have known that there could be consequences for their actions.

As it was - it seems - no-one with any power or ability joined the gay boy's support system. The gang might have done what they did anyway, but there would have been a lot more discussion and fear before it happened. Males are very simple. If they think there is going to be a clear consequence for their actions, they'll stop and think. If they think there's a free rein to behave in a particular fashion, they'll do it.

The whole idea of a gang culture is that you stop and think if the person you want to take out is part of a bigger and more powerful gang. The adults didn't join the gay boy's gang - for whatever reason. They hung him out to dry and they deserve to be called on for that decision.

They're adults. They know how the system works and when someone asked them for help, they walked away.

This isn't a gay thing, this is a child-protection thing. A child asked for help and they ignored him. The people who should have protected a child simply didn't do their jobs.

Gay/straight, black/white, male/female - it doesn't matter. A bullied child who was vulnerable did exactly the right thing as far as he was taught - to reach out to an adult to ask for help. And he didn't get it.

His sexuality is the least important thing in this story. What is disgraceful here is the way in which grown-ups ignored their ethical and/or legal responsibilities to protect a child.
