Great NPH article but terrible cover photo
The New York Magazine article about NPH is wonderfully in-depth and candid but I take objection to the cover photo of him applying lipstick, which has nothing to do with the article. It gives the impression that being gay means wearing lipstick when, of course, one has no correlation with the other.
Btw, the Chad Allen video link doesn't work. Here's the URL to the main page of Out.com's Show and Tell series of videos. Besides 2 videos with Chad Allen, there are 3 with Robert Gant and 2 with Candis Cayne. Also, Bruno Tonioli only introduces each segment; the actual teaching is left to two other professional dancers.

Lipstick
In the article he goes out of his way to not denigrate anyone who expresses his sexuality differently and expresses his sexuality in a more complicated way than he way he does. I actually love that lipstick photo taken the context of that incredibly sexy Rolling Stone photo. He's refusing to accept a stereotype about sexuality. God I love this man.Yes he's got a rocking bod and yes he plays the media, but he's just so damn, incredibly sexy intelligent about how he does it. Luv this guy to bits.
lipstick...
i saw the cover as a way of saying "you're probably thinking of me in this way, but come on in, and you'll be surprised..."
lots of people think of gay men and picture dressing in drag (among other stupid things), so in a way, i think the cover is a "dont judge a book by the cover..." sort of thing
totally repeated myself twice. wow, go me. oh well. hopefully that makes sense.
thanks for the heads up!
I don't see what the big deal with NPH is...
Sure, he's a star. Why? He played popular STRAIGHT characters. Have a Hollywood actor who's known for a popular gay character, and we'll talk.
NPH is no different from Gerald Butler; both have starred in virulently homophobic productions (Harold &Kumar; 300) for mere profit. They are not advocates because to be such would run counter to their finances.
---
Speaking of Nelsan Ellis, it's a shame his parents live up to the role of bigoted Pentecoastal blacks. It's what raking acclaim, money that they're undoubtedly benefitting from, and fame to their son; they should be happy.
Also, good news that Lafayette will be getting a boyfriend~
On a final note, is anyone sad that Maryanne's gone, so we won't see the hysterical alter of Hoyt's mother anymore? She does go psychotic next season by kidnapping Bill, but I loved the vicious Wii champion.
try reading the article about NPH
Has NPH ever claimed to be an advocate of anything other than magic (and shoes on Sesame Street)? Oh, there WAS that bit role he had in Prop 8 The Musical.
You may not care about NPH but if you actually read the linked article from New York Magazine, you just might gain some insight into why other folks think so highly of him.
Read my post again.
It should be obvious I don't consider him an advocate. Thus why I don't get all the praise.
So, great, he assimilates with a homophobic Hollywood very well; good for him. There's nothing impressive about being a rarity Hollywood execs don't feel heterosexist enough to squash.
What's special about NPH is
What's special about NPH is that he is likable in his own right, and a lot of straight people are crazy about him
The character of Barney could have easily been another chauvnistic man-whore, but he makes it as adorable as Jude Law's Alfie, through his charm, wits and inextinguishable charisma
The loved him before he came out publicly, and what's surprising, and telling of how time have changed, is that they didn't feel any different AFTER he came out
What makes this important is that since he is not being crushed by "heterosexist Hollywood", he is there in straight people's faces all the time, which might make a difference in their acceptance of gay people.
Remember Afterelton's motto "Because visibility matters"
NPH
Agreed. Also, he's intelligent, articulate, and takes criticism with great grace.
While his biggest roles have been straight, he has played gay on more than one occasion. And I don't think an actor has to play gay to be respected by the community. He's open about who he is in every venue, even when asked Howard Stern's unique brand of inappropriately personal questioning.
He may not be an activist, but he's an excellent and highly visible role model.
No mention
Of Elton John's possible adoption plans being shot down?

The Salon.com was funny.
Possible Spoilers for True Blood Season 3?
Looks like season 3 will be using the plot of Club Dead, the third Sookie Stackhouse novel, what with Bill's abduction in the season 2 finale and the announcement of the actor who will play the Vampire King of Mississippi. It will be interesting to see how true to the book the story line will play.
In the books, the Vampire King of Mississippi is gay and eventually (in the seventh book) gets married to the Vampire King of Indiana.

I Heart Denis O'Hare
N.P.H..
always the best and charming.(love his role in HIMYM).
NPH
I almost didn't bother to read the article, not being a huge NPH fan, but I'm glad I did. Great article --- he came off as very genuine, very likable, and funny, of course! I guess I'm offically a fan now!
I heart Brett Novek
He is the only reason I watched that horrible model show. Gorgeous!!!
NPH (Yes again)and other matters
Maybe is beacuse HIMYM doens't air here in mexico so oftenly, or because I don't find so freakingly hilarious when it does or because here in Mexico we are way behind in gay rights, or because we only have one out gay celebrity but I don't know what is the big deal with the guy, I don't understand all the worshiping that this site does for him(Don't missunderstand me the site ROCKS!!!) he's only a TV celebrity, maybe if he would do a couple of movies and become areally HUGE hollywood star the worship would be worth it, but so far I think this is just over the top, and though I actually don't have the chance to read the magazine I do think the pic is not properly used, it kinda encourages stereotypes, which is, as far as I know, something AFTERELTON strongly disencourages.
The chad allen clip didn't download anyway but that's just because my PC is kinda f**k*d up.
And as the briefs guy concerns I was surprisingly dissapointed, I LOVED that show, specially because of all the HOT guys including Brett but that is not one of his best pics, I mean his body is GREAT but looks as if he didn't washed his gorgeous face that day.

NPH
I think one of the reasons he is so popular is because Neil Patrik Harris already played an iconic television character in the US when he was a child and in his teens and now he's once again on a very popular show.
Doogie Houser was an incredibly popular television show and so NPH has grown up on screen.
The US public knows him so watching him grow up from a smal boy to an adult man who is now out and proud and gay, etc is a big deal.
The Rolling Stone cover is meant to be ironic because Neil Patrik Harris is not a cross-dresser or drag queen (not that we know of) so it's about going against what people think of him, not encouraging stereotypes.
I don't think anyone in the US thinks of Neil Patrik Harris as the kind of guy who would wear lipstick.
I don't think there is anything wrong with a man (gay or straight) wearing lipstick if that's what he likes (and it looks good LOL)
