"Brothers & Sisters" spoiler alert for next season

The third season of Brothers & Sisters doesn't start until the fall, but Televisionista already has spoilers for the first five episodes.

How is this possible? Usually, shows start filming for the fall season in July, but because the writer's strike played havoc with the schedule, ABC decided to put the show back in production for the new season in April (presumably right after they finished the final few episodes of last season).

After the break, you can see the hot off the press spoilers for the next season, including a SHOCKING offer for Kevin!

This is just a sampling of the spoilers that Televisionista posted, so be sure to head on over for the rest.

"Episode #303 is titled Tug of War. Uncle Saul resigns from Ojai which is now essentially run by Tommy and Holly; Tommy is shocked to learn Sarah is also leaving the family business; Rebecca is concerned about Justin's sobriety and Kevin may have to keep his marriage to Scotty a secret.

In episode #304 titled Everything Must Go, Nora organizes a garage sale trying to get rid of '30 years of living' and come up with start-up money for her charity foundation; Julia confronts Sarah and defends her husband Tommy; and Kevin is stunned by Robert's offer to become his Communications Director.

Finally, in episode #305 titled You Get What You Need, Kevin is devastated when the board of his law firm rejects the proposal to make him a partner - will he accept Robert's offer? Scotty's parents come for a visit; Sarah goes on a job hunt and Justin and Rebecca become intimate."

There are some interesting stories here. It sounds like Kevin is going to run into trouble with his firm concerning his marriage, but to go work for Robert? Yikes! We will see Scotty's parents again, so that has a lot of dramatic potential, but the fate of Uncle Saul is unknown.

What do you guys think of these tidbits, and what stories would you like to see?

    Kevin and Scotty's big secret

Kevin may have to keep his marriage to Scotty a secret.

That actually won't be hard. The family and the 5 people who attended the ceremony will be easy to control.

I only hope that when the dad turns up alive and he kidnaps Ameera they can make it to NY in time...Oh wait...I'm confusing my poorly written drama shows.

    Joseph's picture

In a state that now sanctions same-sex marriage...

...isn't keeping it a secret a rather, um, ridiculous plot development? Besides, wasn't Kevin's proposal to Scotty initially so that he could list him as his domestic partner for Scotty to have insurance benefits? And how does being a corporate lawyer make one qualified to be a communications director for a Republican politician (who is actually more liberal than most Democrats)?

It's an enjoyable show, but logical storytelling is not one of its virtues!

    Wait a minute...

I thought that Kevin already was a partner in his law firm. I'd have to dig back through the episodes to where that was mentioned but I do recall it having been said at some point. And it would explain his having a spiffy corner two-window office in an LA skyscraper.

Kevin's also been out out work basically forever (he had a picture of ex in his office for example) so I can't see this becoming an issue now. Especially since several people from his firm were at the "wedding" (I still can't stop putting the quotes around that word to describe that tacky house party).

Becoming Robert's Communications Director would also be extremely bizarre. For starters I can't imagine it paying anywhere near what someone like Kevin can make as an attorney. Secondly unless something big is changing Robert is a Republican and Kevin is not. Thirdly, a Republican senator's office can't be any friendlier for an openly-gay, married guy than Kevin's law firm.

This would require them to do some major writing gymnastics and I'm not sure that I like the sound of it. While I sympathize with "gays face discrimination" storylines I don't think that they should be employed by default when you have gay characters, especially if it requires doing retcon work to make it fit.

Now I'm worried that B&S might be falling prey to the malaise that some really good shows do after a couple good seasons. Sometimes after an explosive entry onto the scene (Heroes, Lost, etc.) the writing quality abruptly plummets and the show loses quality fast. I sure hope that's not the case here.

    Kevin a partner? - don't know

I watched the first four episodes of season one again.  The only mention I could find in those was in episode 1.02 when Kitty, Nora and Kevin were driving to pick Justin up from jail.  They were discussing rehab.  Kevin makes the statement "A partner of mine just came back from Hazelton, MN."  That was the only reference I could find in the first four episodes, and it is a very loose reference.

If someone else can remember another episode where this is mentioned more directly, I'd be happy to check my DVD.

    Okay, hold on a minute

So, I take it Kitty is officially a housewife of Pasadena (or whereever Robert's chateau is), but Kevin as Robert's CD? I thought they were at odds with each other regarding Kevin's relationship with the gay McAllister?

What's next? Saul goes to work as Robert's finance/budget/economics advisor? Or simply retires (I can't imagine he actually has to work) and maybe he goest to run the vineyard part time?

    Janet's picture

    Hmmm, well....

...Even though it's out of order of the episode spoilers, the first thing I thought of was that Kevin would have to keep the marriage secret if he TAKES the job with the Senator. That would make more sense than at the law firm. Maybe, he does it to retain a good insurance policy or something. I'm not very clear how American medical stuff works. But I agree, it makes no sense, really. A communications director for a party he hates?

I knew Scotty's parents would be back. They were just too interesting not to. And I hope they give Saul a good story line. That actor has such a great attitude, he deserves a juicy story.

I say we take the warning labels off everything and let nature take it's course.

    Re: Kevin's "secret"

The "secret" thing is being blown out of proportion.  His firm knows he's gay and that he's civil union-ed.

Rather, in episode 3, Kevin is pressured by a senior partner to keep his being gay (and married to a man, natch) on the down-low while they're wooing a prospective (conservative) VIP client.

Kevin is deeply discomforted by the charade and resents being put in that position by his boss.  But since he's on partner track,he probably sucks it up thinking the means will justify the end (i.e, that he will soon be made partner).  But then he finds out in episode 5 that he's been passed over for partner.  And he notes that typically you make partner "or you're out."  Given these circumstances, I predict Kevin will leave his firm.

ETA:  It's not clear that Kevin is passed over because he's gay.  It's a possibility, but there's no concrete info establishing that as of yet.

Finally, I'd add that at the start of the episode, Kevin is extremely unmoved about Robert's job offer.  Kitty calls and asks him if he's thought about it, and he tells her he's not interested in being a Republican senator's communications director and that he's already "taken" (by his firm).  This, of course, occurs before he finds out he doesn't make partner.

I believe it was established that Kevin is passed over, because the other one brought in more money with his clients.

And since we are discussing spoilers: in the first episode Kevin apparently loses the 'Ojai' account, it is not sure if he gets it back. And it won't be a big loss, but the firm probably weighed Kevin's losses against the other man's gaining clients...

    Psionycx's picture

    Okay...

First, I have to ask how you all have so much detail on hand here.

Second, I'm still not liking the continuity of this storyline. It sounds a little soap opera-ish for a show like B&S. Which isn't to say that it isn't really going to happen. Writing often deteriorates in shows after a couple seasons nowadays. I think the last four episodes of season 2 were mediocre at best for example.

But let's start with this new detail, how would Kevin lose Ojai? Last I checked he was also Tommy's lawyer at Walker Landing so unless he signs on to help Sarah sue Holly (a possibility I suppose) I don't see that happening.

So really, this sounds like a plot device to get Kevin into Robert's sphere which is, quite frankly, something I'd really rather not see. Especially because it's so implausible.

As a senatorial staffer would Kevin even have DP benefits to extend to Scotty? I can't see Kevin doing a campaign for Robert for senate, no matter what detente they've worked out.

Reading these spoilers I'm really starting to dread next season. It sounds like we're going in a soapy direction.

    Re: Kevin/Tommy

It's hard to say for sure, but it appears that in the season premiere Tommy fires Kevin as the family lawyer in order to save money, post-merger.  So that's how Kevin loses the account.

I don't think Robert is campaigning (he dropped out of the presidential race, and they've made no mention tha the's up for re-election in the Senate).

As for soapy...well, I think we already hit that patch when they reversed Rebecca's paternity last season so they could hook her up with Justin.  I'm sticking around for now for Kevin, Nora, and Sarah, but if they screw that up, then I'm done.

    I'm not a lawyer (I dodged

I'm not a lawyer (I dodged that bullet!) but I come from a family of lawyers, so I know a lot of the ins and out of firm politics. First, Kevin belongs to a wealthy and well-connected family. Second, his brother-in-law is a big pol who was running for president. Third, he's gay in a state where "diversity" is a big deal. That means there's NO WAY IN HELL that he'd be passed over for a partnership! I don't care what account he "lost" -- his connections make him extremely valuable to a firm. His sexuality also makes him valuable because of the cases involving gay issues that are exploding right now. It's a complete "jump the shark" moment to pretend that he'd be dumped at this point in his career, or denied a partnership. Right -- and piss off Mr. Rob Lowe Politician? I don't think so. Law firms PRAY for a connection like that!

    The credibility stretch on B&S

Well, for starters, Kevin just got done making a stink about Scotty not having health benefits and wanting to get him on his coverage. I'm not 100% sure, but I think that as a senatorial staffer Kevin would be a federal employee and under DOMA would not be able to extend DP benefits to Scotty. The federal government does not recognize state domestic partnerships, civil unions or same-sex marriages.

Secondly, what qualifies Kevin to be a communications director? Sure Kity could do it. She was a professional pundit, had experience with the media and was used to spouting rhetoric and buzzwords. But Kevin's a lawyer. He deals in contracts and hard facts. So far as we know he's always been in corporate law his entire career so it's unlikely he has much media relations experience. He has enough trouble with Kitty!

Third, he's a Democrat, Robert (unless something is changing) is a Republican. While Kevin and Robert are now on reasonable termsI have a hard time imagining him drinking the Kool-aid to that extent.

Fourth, as Knickie pointed out, Kevin is a talented lawyer from a family with broad connections and whose sister is married to a U.S. senator with whom he's on at least reasonable terms. Even if his own firm were stupid enough to pass him over for a partnership he wouldn't have a hard time getting into another firm. Why would he go work for Robert?

So, I am forced to conclude that this smells suspiciously like soapy writing. It opens the door for tensions in his relationship with Scotty by potentially exposing him to Jason on a regular basis. It also goes into realms of PSA by introducing a "what it's like to be gay and Republican" plot.

    Somehow I'm feeling dubious.

    I think the most shocking

I think the most shocking thing about these spoilers is that they are actually bringing back the character of Julia for a THIRD season of standing around doing nothing.  Biggest waste of airspace ever!

    yeah, um.....

these spoilers aren't even that detailed....there is much more to these than these short little sentences.

    great avatar

From my favorite Cary Grant/Ingrid Bergman movie "Indiscreet".

I am looking forward to the development in Season 3....I hope if gay-marriage in CA is not repealed in November that Kevin and Scotty actually do get married.

    I can't believe the writers

I can't believe the writers are going forward with Justin and Rebecca sleeping together despite the mostly negative reaction to the pairing. As far as continuity goes, this show is notorious for changing things to fit the plot. All of Season 1 went down the drain just so they could pair up Justin and Becky!

Isn't this how Kitty's relationship with McCallister started?

By being his "communications director?"  Maybe THAT's the road they're taking Kevin down.  In honor of the storyline, I predict that by the end of the season, Kevin will have broken up Kitty's marriage.  Then he'll be the one with the biological clock ticking and begging for kids with McCallister.

    Hi new here

If the show went back into production in April (I am assuming that means filming) that means there will be no reference to the Supreme Court ruling, which will be strange.

I am putting the last few episodes down to the strike and will see what happens, a few of my fav shows went haywire because of it.

I will say the whole Rebecca thing was a let down and it is weird to see Justin and Rebecca kiss. Although I did enjoy the scene at the movies when Justin gets really scared of Rebecca touching him.

Is there any mention of them searching for the other kid?

    Re: Production

From what I can tell, they're shooting for the first 6 episodes of the next season now, will then take a short break, and then resume again and go straight through the rest of the season.

Ryan hasn't appeared yet through episode 5.  And they haven't begun casting for the role yet.
