Bryan Fuller on saving "Heroes" ... and which out actor has been cast as Sylar's father?

Zachary Quinto, Bryan Fuller

Out writer/producer Bryan Fuller has given his first interview since rejoining the struggling NBC series Heroes.

Join us after the break for the details, and learn which acclaimed gay actor (and second-time TV supervillain father) will be joining the cast!

Bryan talked with gay reporter sprite Michael Ausiello about where things went wrong with the once must-see show:

"It became too dense and fell into certain sci-fi trappings. For instance, in the “Villains” arc, when you talk about formulas and catalysts, it takes the face off the drama. And I think the goal for everybody is to put a face back on the drama. You have to save something with a face; otherwise you don’t understand what you’re caring about. I thought the "Villains" arc started out very interestingly, and then became sort of muddy and dense and I couldn't get my hooks into the characters to understand their motivations. I also started to feel confused about what people's abilities were. One of the great things about the first season is that the metaphor for their abilities was very clear. Those metaphors seem to have gotten complicated in the past two seasons. I share that concern with everybody on the writing staff. It's not like I'm coming in and saying, "This is what you need to do to fix it!" Everybody knows what needs to be fixed and everybody is sort of rowing in that direction."

He also talks about trimming the cast, which grew to ridiculous numbers, and tightening things up:

"People will die. And some will return. Matt’s wife Janice comes back. We’ll find out what happens when you have a superbaby. We're also going to tell fewer stories per episode. We're going to limit it to three or four with one big one that you can wrap the stories around. We're altering the structure of the show so that there's a very clear A story that takes up a larger percentage of the show so that that story gets traction."

John Glover

One character that will be added is Sylar (Zachary Quinto)'s father, who will be played by Tony winning out actor John Glover. Glover's been busy lately, as he's also going to be showing up on ABC's Brothers & Sisters as a love interest for Uncle Saul (Ron Rifkin). He's also no stranger to sci-fi television, having played papa to another supervillain (Lex Luthor) on Smallville.

What do you think? Do you feel confident that Bryan Fuller can turn things around, and will Sylar's father help heat things up?

I'm sure he can do it!

    Nicaraguanboi!

I'm pretty sure he can do it!  His plan of action to change things around sounds pretty good.  We need the drama back.  Lately the show has been too hard to follow and to keep up with the characters has been a drag!  Overall the plot and the characters have become too detach and I'm getting really tired of the fact that they all don't have one intertwined storyline and to keep saving the darn world!  Hopefully these changes will make a diference to keep this beloved show around.  I wonder why with the decline in ratings ABC don't keep Pushing Daisies around and cancelled without any consideration for it's audience.

    As long as people die

I think I stopped being excited about "Heroes" after people stopped actually dying. I mean, come on, kill off some actual people! And I think it relied on overused tropes as well, 2 eclipses don't happen within 1 year of each other, it's impossible. And Fuller is right about the abilities muddling up, and relying too much on sci-fi fallbacks instead of real writing. "Heroes" was more a character-based drama than anything else, and the metaphor of powers is important. But you can have a character-based drama in the sci-fi milleu, just look at "Battlestar Galactica."

    Kill Heroes

    I prefer Pushing Daisies.

I don't think that even Fuller could save Heroes from itself. ABC should do the smart thing and develop the "Fables" pilot into a TV show and have Bryan Fuller as head writer/Showrunner on that show. Fables is based on the Vertigo Comics series "Fables" written by Bill Willingham and Art by Mark Buckingham. Bring Lee Pace in as one of the characters.

    I like John Glover, but

I like John Glover, but nothing would lure me back to this train wreck of a show. Bring back "Daisies"!

    I hate John Glover, but

I've watched the show off and on and have started liking it again, especially the last few weeks. Sylar is the best thing about the show lately. I hope he kills off Glover as soon as possible.

    Monday's episode

Did Fuller have a hand in this past Monday's episode?  It was actually pretty good for a change.  They injected a sense of humor back into the show.

    Superwriting skills needed!

They took 2 episodes to explain the eclipse, after which felt like a punctured tyre - meh~! Every episode I start watching with anticipation but everytime it fails to get me off. It just falls short of something something.

I am only watching the show because of Milo and Adrian. I hate Daphne's hair so much!! My problem with the show is that they get on too much with saving the world - everytime it's about going to the future/past, seeing something bad and coming back to the present to change it.

I agree with Lenny that last week's episode, Our Fathers, was at least injected with some humour. I know that they are going to make Nathan the villain, but killing off Arthur so easily, after all he had a lot of powers (!), was really anti-climatic.

I also urge the producers/writers stop with the "to be continued..." statement at the end of each episode - no wonder people don't watch it anymore... every episode is followed by worse storylines and cliff hangers. Why would people come back? Solve something at least!

    Reign it in...

the show has a lot of potential when it juxtaposes superhuman feats with ordinary problems.  escaping a car wreck, because you can fly...discovering a wife's infidelity due to telepathy...discovering your ability to bend time and space while bored at work.  viewers can empathize with stories that are grounded in everyday struggles.

on another note, can we please learn the haitian's name.

    It will be great!

It will be great! I think fuller will bring it back to the drama
base show that it was, before that crazy second season,
but I most say that the show has been pretty good the pass weeks:
like Hiro and his mother. It was the kind of drama that the show was missing.

    Done With Heroes

Yeah, best of luck to Bryan Fuller and John Glover, but I'm done.  Period.

    Once in motion

A train wreck is difficult to stop.  I loved WONDERFALLS and PUSHING UP DAISIES.  I am not sure that Bryan Fuller can pull this one off the bubble.  It has lost major audience appeal and who knows what the hell NBC is thinking with all Jay Leno all the time at 10:00pm.  His ratings were great for Late Night, but with it best numbers they don't compare to to most 10:00 PM scripted shows.  I guess they want that unimportant over 49 audience that would watch the show so they could get to sleep earlier.

    That's all I am saying...

Heroes has just gone on too long

While I wish Bryan Fuller luck--and if anyone can pull this show out of the sludge it's him. But I think this show (like Lost) is an example of a show that should have been a limited series and not extended beyond a season.

I miss the show of old, it

I miss the show of old, it had great potential.  The past two years have been for shit.  I do wish John luck, but I'm not coming back to watching anything but the Sylar scenes.
