Comedian Demetri Martin in talks to play gay lead in Ang Lee's "Taking Woodstock"

Last week, I blogged about Taking Woodstock,the upcoming biopic of Elliot Tiber, the gay man who was instrumental in bringing the music festival to fruition. Well, it seems that Academy Award-winning Brokeback Mountain director Ang Lee has chosen a leading man, and in a surprising decision, it's stand up comedian (and Beatles-tressed) Demetri Martin. (Martin is currently in negotiations, so nothing's signed yet.)

Demetri is best known for his "Trendspotting" bits on The Daily Show, and I've had the hots for him I've been a fan of his deadpan style for a while. I'd be curious to learn what kind of casting process came up with his name, though. He certainly isn't the first one that springs to mind when you think of "gay hippie" ... although he certainly has the hair for it.

    It's too bad they aren't casting Neal McDonough from the Sci-Fi mini-series "Tin Man", he's a deadringer (no pun intended) for the real deal.

    I found his "Trends" segments on The Daily Show quite lame, especially his constant use of things gay for laughs, as well as his juvenile "That's so gay" language.

    He did this "joke" on his Comedy Central special about being irked that the gay community uses the rainbow. IMHO it came across like someone trying to get away with being homophobic (and not in a Sarah Silverman nudge-nudge wink-wink nothing-is-PC nothing-is-sacred kind of way). I changed channels after that.

    "I’m in a weird situation because i like rainbows.. but I’m not gay. So, i wear a rainbow on my shirt - but then under it, it says “not gay ” .. but I’m not against gay people, so under that i have to put “but supportive.” I just think its weird that one group took refracted light. That’s preeetty greedy gays."

    I thought it was funny.

    Demetri Martin can't go two minutes on the Daily Show without making a joke with gay people as the punchline.  If this anti-gay clueless overprivileged smirking het dumbfuck is chosen for this role, I will lead the boycott of the movie.

    So we have become so sensitive that we attack a straight guy who is going to play gay because we "perceive"  his routine as being "anti-gay?". Whoa - no wonder we are losing straight friends. Or perhaps you don't have any?
