Fantasy Casting! Who Should Vamp it up with Jake Gyllenhaal and Jim Carrey in the Big-Screen Remake of "Damn Yankees"?

Jake Gyllenhaal and Jim Carrey may be making sweet music together

Deadline Hollywood is reporting that plans are underway to bring a modern version of Damn Yankees to the big screen.

Potentially helming the remake is out director Todd Graff, who gave us Camp and the underrated Bandslam, but to me will always be remembered as the mouse-loving Hippy in The Abyss.

Todd Graff, then and now

Out Hairspray producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are attached to the film, as is Jake Gyllenhaal, who would play the young baseball player who makes a faustian deal with Jim Carrey.

But who would play the vampy icon Lola, who tries to seduce the young slugger into keeping his contract with the devil? Ideally the role should go to an actress who can sing, dance, act, and can show a younger man the ropes.

We've got a few choices for who should play the cougar ... from hell!

  • Jane Krakowski knows all about performing in musicals, having won a Tony Award for Nine, and she actually played Lola in the New York City Theater production of Yankees two years ago, opposite Sean Hayes and Cheyenne Jackson.

>

  • Another Broadway babe, Kristin Chenoweth is a natural for Lola, having won a Tony and Emmy, and she can vamp it up with the best of them.

  • Another fabulous triple-threat, Vanessa Williams will have time on her hands with the end of Ugly Betty.

  • This would be the greatest, not to mention most perfect casting in film history. Let's face it, RuPaul was born to play this role, and the thought of a Ru/Jake pairing would squash any squawking about Hollywood defiling another classic.

  • Because everything is better with Betty.

These choices may be for naught, however, if the filmmakers make the (unwise, IMHO) decision to go for a younger Lola. If they do, we have a few recommendations (but we implore TBTB to steer clear of any of those interchangeable young bores from The Disney Channel or Nickelodeon).

  • When it comes to young triple-threats, the hot commodity right now is Glee star Lea Michelle. But can she vamp it up enough?

If the filmmakers really want to make a modern-day version, they should think "outside-the-box" ... far "outside-the-box". They could make Jake's character gay, change the gender of Lola, and cast one of the out Broadway hunks who have been mainstays here at AE for a while. Nick Adams, Nicholas Rodriguez, Jonathan Groff and Gavin Creel would all make an excellent Mamp (male vamp) ... if Cheyenne Jackson turns it down first.

These are just a few of the possibilities. What's your fantasy casting choice?
