Did coming out tarnish Matthew Mitcham's gold in the eyes of sponsors?
Now that the dust has settled on Matthew Mitcham's historic Olympic diving victory, the fact of his lack of sponsorship deals has become glaringly obvious. He recently gave an interview in which he discusses how much he's appreciated the attention he's received (especially from the gay press), but when it comes to endorsements, he's been left high and dry: "Yeah, I haven't got anything yet," he says as the smile slides from his face for the first time during the interview. "I'm working on stuff, and looking for stuff but, no, I haven't got anything yet." "It has surprised and disappointed me, I guess, because I have seen how successful some other athletes are after winning Olympic medals. I hope it will all come." Don't you just want to hug him? As to whether he believes it has to do with his coming out, he's ... unsure: "As I said, nothing negative has come of the coming-out experience, which is a really good thing - it's what I would have hoped for, but one can't help but think I might not have sponsorship yet because I came out before the Olympics," Mitcham says. But Mitcham does not want favours because he is gay. He wants simply to be like other Olympic gold medallists. And it doesn't take long for the optimism to return: "It might not be true. I'd like to hope that's not the case, and I put it to the businesses and companies of Australia to prove that thinking and mindset wrong and challenge that, because it's just too, too easy to think that's the way it is." Okay, now don't you just really want to hug him? Hopefully, Matthew will find a sponsor in time to raise the money he needs for a return trip to the Olympics, and he'll certainly have our support! Let's face facts
Sport is an ideological construct designed to propagandize heterosexuality.
PERIOD.
Damn that Billie Jean King
and her heterosexual propaganda!
No, not "distant gay traces" -- it's distingué traces!
I'm somewhat in agreement with David....
in where the idea of a gay athlete, not to mention a gold medal winner at the World Olympic Games, which is the end-all be-all of sports recognition and contrary to all that the heterosexual world has come to expect, must be sought as a horrific event to the heterosexual, religious right world, I don't agree in that this event is entirely designed to propagandize heterosexuality. At least not outside the USA. Where we, here in the good ol' USA were not allowed by the US network to see the "private and personal" celebration of this individual after making his triumphant win, and his receiving the medal he deserved, there were others who did. Other countries that still televised this event, while we, in this over religious, backwards, "democratic" nation did not. I think that the Olympic Games Committee should be the ones, and only the ones to oversee what does and what does not get seen, and what does and what does not get offered to the athletes as endorsement deals... based solely on performance, and not on their religious and/or sexual preferences. Yes I believe that by coming out as he did, this was truely his down fall with reagrd to the endorsement deals he should have gotten, becuase of the influence of the all mighty dollar and where it comes from.
Yes it is
Why do you suppose NBC ignored Matthew? Here he was competing in a sport dominated by the host country and beating them all in one of those breathtaking moments that television would seemingly be designed to celebrate.
Ah but Mathew's gay, therefore in NBC's eyes, there's no story.
Gays can't be winners as far as the status quo is concerned -- only losers and victims.
i wonder....
i wonder if other winners are having luck with sponsors. i mean, michael phelps still is a 'big name' and i can't remember another American name that was repeated so much other than his. there has to another American out there who won gold for something else.
if the media gives a person enough attention, they will have more success. Now, maybe Matthew isn't getting any sponsors because he's gay.....but i also bet others aren't getting enough sponsors in general simply because they're not noted as the 'greatest olympian of all time' - - It really bugged me how the media was so into michael phelps. I have no problem with him, but come on.....he was NOT THE ONLY one competing...and definetely was not the only gold winner from our country. if he was then....well, my mistake. do correct me if i am wrong.
Maybe it's not all about being gay
David Cal won gold and silver in Athens (and two silvers in Pekin), he is handsome and straight, but he needs to go to tv and complaint about the lack of endorsements to finally reach a deal.
Minority sports are very different of mainstream sports, they have the spotlight in the Olympics, but then people just forget them
no Aussiebum for Mitcham?
I read a while back about Mitcham getting a sponsorship with Aussiebum. Did that fall through?
