Fleshing out the gay in the "Entertainment Weekly" 50 Sexiest Movies
Entertainment Weekly has released their list of the fifty sexiest movies, and there's some welcome gay representation in between some rather dubious straight picks. See the gay & sexy films after the break (along with some NSFW pics, i.e. bare buns!) and decide for yourselves if EW got it right. Y Tu Mama Tambien At number seven on the EW list is Y Tu Mama Tambien with its story of two immature young men (Diego Luna, Gael Garcia Bernal) who are given a lesson in love and life by an older woman (Ana Lopez Mercado). According to EW, the sexiest moment occurs between the two guys: A drunken, boisterous celebration escalates into a sensuous threeway. As Mercado heads south of the border, the guys unexpectedly - and passionately - kiss. There are plenty of other homoerotic moments, too, like the mutual masturbation scene on diving boards, and the playful shower scene, with the guys comparing their equipment. Hugh Grant, James Wilby in Maurice At number thirty on the list is Maurice, with its tale of repressed love at Cambridge between Clive (Hugh Grant) and Maurice (James Wilby): Alone in the dorms, Maurice and Clive stroke each other's hair before nuzzling into their first embrace. Romantic, yes, but it's also about as chaste as Luke and Noah. I much prefer a different relationship in the film ... Rupert Graves, James Wilby The relationship between Maurice and the smoking hot Scudder (Rupert Graves) was the first time that I (and plenty of other gay boys) saw an actual physical relationship between men on screen. You never forget your first. Jude Law's Buns, Matt Damon in The Talented Mr. Ripley At number thirty-nine is The Talented Mr. Ripley, with Matt Damon and Jude law and their strange relationship: Anthony Minghella's film is infused with old-world luster and sultry jazz, but when Tom and Dickie play a simple game of chess - over a bathtub, with Law naked inside - every move is an advance and a rebuff. Nothing that steamy ever ends well. And when Jude got out of the bathtub, how many "pause" and "frame advance" buttons were pressed til they shorted out? Ohad Knoller, Yehuda Levi in Yossi & Jagger At number forty-nine is the most surprising gay film on the list: art-house favorite Yossi & Jagger. The story of two Israeli soldiers who try to find solace with each other, EW's favorite scene was unabashedly romantic: The guys go at it, fully clothed, on a snowy hillside. Because we see mostly close-ups of their faces as they make out, joke, and laugh, what's sexy is their sweet delight in one another. You can see a clip of this scene below, and we're interested to hear your thoughts on the gay films on this list. Did EW get it right, or did they drop the ball? EW Has Made Some Excellent Choices
I have reviewed all 50 of Entertainment Weekly's sexiest movies and I must say they have made some of the most accurate choices in this area. It's obvious they did not just go to the usual sources but looked all over independent films and films whose sexiness might make some cringe. I was also curious in thinking that the amount of gay and art-house content on this list might have something to do with EW editor Mark Harris being married to Tony Kushner.
The selection of Yossi & Jagger shocked me and at the same time made me extremely happy. I'll always remember that scene in the snow as one of the most intimate and sexy scenes I had ever seen. The way it was shot with close-ups and the eventual outcome of the movie, just made the scene all the more memorable. The film's selection reminded me of another EW list that named Queer as Folk one of the sexiest shows of all time and singling out Brian and Justin's first time together in the pilot episode as the sexiest moment of the entire series.
While I was most proud of Yossi & Jagger's inclusion on the list I was very pleased with the inclusions of Secretary, Unfaithful, Once, Mulholland Drive and Swimming Pool. Many of those would be considered unconventional choices by those who would consider themselves mainstream but I do consider their unique approach to sexuality as the main factors for them being on this list.
you are so right about your first!
I hadn't thought of the first time i saw two men show physical attraction to each other and now I remember it. I was eating a slice of pizza with my mum in the kitchen and Beautiful thing was playing in the background on channel 4 (i wasn't paying any attention to it, because I was getting told off for not getting a good grade in maths) and i looked up and saw the two leads kissing!! Fantastic moment for me :) I've not seen any of the films above but I think i might be seeking them out!!

Maribel Verdú
Maurice
I agree, James Wilby and Hugh Grant fondling each other's hair is romantic, but hardly sexy, and sexy is what the list is supposed to be about, right? Then Rupert Graves climbing through the window to seduce Wilby--now THAT'S sexy!

Their last kiss was also very sexy and romantic
I'd NEVER seen anything like that until I watched Maurice. That movie helped make me more at peace with my sexuality and told me I could have a happy relationship.
I wish I were more surprised that EW chose to ignore that relationship for the repressed, unhappy Clive/Maurice pairing.
Scudder!
Maurice was such a great film. Rupert Graves was so simple and romantic in the film in comparison to the much more learned James Wilby. It was a great pairing and a memorable series of scenes. The meeting in the boathouse in particular is such a great moment about love and devotion over worldy pride. Alec Scudder and Maurice are the couple to remember in truth.
As for other films that are sexy, I would add Beautiful Thing more for its romance than its sexiness. The scene in the woods where their two leads chase each other and kiss while Cass Elliott sings "Make Your Own Kind of Music" is wonderful as is when they dance at the end of film as the entire neighborhood watches. I can see how hte ages of the leads could be off putting as a sexy film, but an otherwise romantic film that speaks to the possibilities of young love.
