"Forbidden Love" video clip update: Olli's on his way home ... what could go wrong?
It’s been two weeks since we’ve seen Olli on Forbidden Love, but Christian is on his way to the airport to pick him up. Why do I have a bad feeling about this? Find out after the break, and take our poll! Yes, Christian is excited because he’ll finally be able to see Olli (who’s been vacationing in Ibiza) but as he leaves for the airport, my b.s. meter flew off the charts. I knew that Jo Weil ‘s new scenes wouldn’t be shown until January, so either that was going to be one hell of a long trip to the airport or … they would find some way to stall Olli’s return. Sure enough, Christian is seen at the club, dejected, explaining to Gregor that “Olli has decided to stay in Ibiza for another week … to work as a waiter”. I think I speak for a lot of people when I say “Huh?” That’s what they came up with? So what are they going to do next week when he’s supposed to come home again? Will he get on the wrong plane? Get lost at the airport? Stay another week to compete in the Ibiza 13th Annual Wet Briefs Contest? (hmm … now there’s an idea). We do get some great scenes with Christian and Gregor, though. They decide to get their minds off their love lives by going hiking, and when Gregor says something offensive about gay relationships (that “faithfulness wasn’t a big deal with the gays”) Christian reads him the riot act. We also get a hot flashback to Gregor flying a helicopter (badly) and the two of them look quite fetching in their outdoor gear. Still, the whole "I'm going to pick up Olli...PSYCHE!" thing is just annoying. Or maybe I'm being too hard on the show. What do you think about how TPTB have handled Jo's exit? Take our poll and let us know! Submitted by on Mon, 2008-12-01 17:11. |

Ollie's a little bit of a flake
The original write-off
The original write-off bothered me more than this one. Like Craig Young above said, Olli can be a bit flakey. He infamous got his job on the cruiseship when a cute guy offered it to him in a bar and he announced that he was leaving to his aunt the next day. While some parts of it were certainly clumsy (him calling Christian only when Christian was already on the way to the airport), in general I rather like the idea of Christian having to deal with this side of Olli for once.
What I found interesting was that on the German message boards a lot of people felt that Christian was really dickish to and unsupportive of Gregor. Not about he gay comment but in general. First waxing on about his perfect relationship when Gregor has just found out that his ex-wife remarried and didn't even tell him. Then not taking Gregor's "sense-crisis" seriously and then poo-pooing Gregor and the chopper when flying has always been Gregor's one big dream (it's kinda like if Gregor ran around mocking boxing) without even skipping a beat.
I wonder if that is more a "tone" thing in how the scenes played out because English speakers generally don't seem to have that reaction.
I think you have a point
I think you have a point Lola regarding the language barrier and perception regarding English speakers, because I didn't get that Christian was being 'dickish' as was put. I thought he was just over anxious when he thought Olli was going to be coming home. He was simply happy, couldn't wait. Like Christian said...one more day without Olli and he would have gone crazy. As far as Christian was concerned, it was all about Olli finally coming back to him. Everybody else including the depressing Edith, Judith and Gregor were just a blurr.
I also understand Christian's reponse to Gregor wanting to get back into flying. Remember the doctors had already said he cannot fly anymore because of his eyesight. Again...I saw Christian's respone out of concern for his brother's well being.
I thought the degrading comment that Gregor made to Christian about Olli being in Ibiza alone and gay men sleeping around was well out of order, and Christian rightly slapped him down over it.
Although I was disappointed with the way Olli was written out for Jo's two month tour, I actually think they've handled the absence quite well so far. I really liked this episode.
Sarcastic, cold hearted, ridiculing, unsupportive & disloyal ;)
because I didn't get that Christian was being 'dickish' as was put.
Sarcastic, cold hearted, ridiculing, unsupportive, dismissive, always the first one to take a shot at Gregor and disloyal were some of the words used in the actual conversation. ;)
And the thing that I found interesting was that the German Ollian fans that defended Christian didn't even dispute that that he was like that but mostly countered with things along the lines of "Yes but... Christian has problems expressing his feelings" or "Yes, but ... it would be boring if everybody was nice and emotional on the show" or "Yes, but it's in character/Christian has always been like that and it's good because it's in character".
I actually think that complaints were less than just about this scene, but because it has been a long time coming (the German fans usually watch the entire show so they have seen how off balance Gregor has been lately and there have been issues with Christian's flippant attitude towards Gregor ever since Gregor's marriage ended) and because this scene was pretty typical of the problem, namely that Thore has a tendency to play these scenes as pretty straight forward mocking and talking down to Gregor without any undertone of caring or serious concern.
I just wonder if this is a writing/acting messup or if it could be first hints of a "Christian gets too haughty and gets slapped down big time" storyline since so many fans (including some Ollian fans) had a bad reaction to the scene, so maybe it was supposed to come off this way.
Wow Lola...I didn't
Wow Lola...I didn't know this was the way a lot of German fans of the show felt about Christian's attitude. I don't watch the entire SOAP, just the Ollian storyline which is why I don't get the full picture. Those are strong critcisms. I must admit, I have read on other websites even some english speaking fans do feel that Christian can be too preachy or even condecending at times. Thanks for the information on how the German fans see Christian. Very interesting, indeed.
You know Lola...your post has me thinking...what if Christian is being played this way on purpose in order to set him up for a 'crash landing' so to speak. What if that cocky ego and 'i've got the perfect relationship' attitude many are seeing isn't a set-up for the next storyline and Christian's rude awakening. Thinking about it now, the way he flipped off all those depressing souls around him...Gregor, Lydia and Judith...could come back to haunt him. Although, I saw his cheerful attitude and not wanting to get bogged down in others depressive moods as his overjoy at Olli's pending return, others obviously see it differently. Plus, we all know that Olli is not returning in three weeks, instead it's going to drag on for almost two months, so I think something crucial is going to happen with their ralationship.
Anyway...I can't wait for Olli to return since I think things are going to get very interesting.
