"Forbidden Love" video clip update: Olli's big plans
After far too long, Olli and Christian return, and Olli has big plans to improve his workplace. But will his Aunt Charly remain stuck in the past, or embrace his newfangled notions? Some random thoughts about this clip: 1. They're back! Yeah!!! 2. As much as I love Olli, that may be the most hideous sweater-vest I've ever seen. Was he going "Wabbit Hunting" later? 3. I love that Christian is just playing the supportive partner here. 4. What's Charly's problem? The changes Olli had in mind were pretty superficial. It's not like he suggested go-go boys in cages or Thursday night wet briefs contests. 5. Olli's mad face is hot ... and a little scary. Is this the beginning of a new career venture for Olli? Or at least a new storyline for the guys? Of course, even in the background, these guys are still more involving than most gay characters in the U.S., so we'll just have to be patient and wait 'til they have more to do. Meh.
Not much of anything, was it? I mean, Ollian are adorable, but... doesn't seem like much of a story. Any getting him spending more time at Schnieders just puts him further from Christian. And uncool Schnieders is still cooler than most bars I've spent time in - I'd be happy there even without it being Ibiza-fied.
Best part of the scene to me was the use of Jamie Cullum's music - he's a personal favorite, and just doesn't get enough exposure.
Meh Part II
I agree. Dealing with Olli new career path is probably going to take months, and it just isn't that interesting. I also think Olli is at fault for bombarding Charlie with a ton of ideas all at once. So I don't have a lot of sympathy for Olli.
I did like the "...your tasty exterior is here with me" line. Very cute.
Meh Part III
Well, it seems at least that they are listening to the fans. First, Christian has lost that blond hair (I know it's a while ago, but still) and they are finally waking Olli up profesionally. I just didn't think they would 'enhance' his waiter-status. Pretty boring. And for a gay guy he has CRAP taste in deco! What hideous 80 fluorescent lamps were that?!?
I'd go for the modern chique, minimalistic, industrial look.

Meh part IV
There is quite a bunch of
There is quite a bunch of Christian/Gregor only scenes on IvanIV's account that supports/explains that part of the story a bit better, but they haven't been and probably also won't be in the future.
The main point is that not only has Gregor been spending all his days with his helicopter, but there he met a mysterious girl who also loves helicopters as much as he does and is helping him repair it. Then, last week Stella convinced Gregor to drag himself to the big masked ball where Gregor fell in love with a mysterious ( and engaged!) masked beauty. He stole her fiance's mask and danced with her but when he revealed himself she ran off. He has been obsessed with finding her (claiming that they are linked!by!fate!) and Christian has accused him of neglecting the No Limits to chase after his dream lady.
Naturally, Gregor has been too stupid to realize that his mysterious masked lady and his mysterious not masked little helper lady are one and the same. The latest development is that he has been down because masked lady wrote him a letter telling him not to look for her.
As for the references to Sebastian von Lahnstein. He is the boyfriend of Lydia (who occasionally lives with Ollian and the guy Olivia is in love with). He was abducted by Jens who was Gregor's roommate. Jens put him into some old building and then ran his car against a tree. Now Jens is in coma and nobody knows where Sebastian is hidden and Sebastian is slowly dying of thirst because nobody is coming to check on him.
Among the non-subtitled scenes is one where Olli brought Stella and Charlie the news about Sebastian's abduction and Charlie sent Olli home because he seemed so affected as well as another scene where the flatshare people find out that their neighbour Jens was the culprit. In parallel to this Ollian story Lydia and Olivia teamed up with Sebastian's sister Rebecca and managed to identify the place where Sebastian was being held.
:)
And after being tied up in that chair for two weeks, Sebastian probably needs to go pottie in the WORST way.
******SPOILER********
I'm just happy that Sebastian gets a haircut while he's in the hospital.
looking forward to Olli's future plans...
After just watching the episode that aired today, i'm really looking forward to Olli's storyline. Today's episode was very nice and detailed. Plenty of really good Ollian interaction.
I do agree that yesterday's coverage with Olli wanting to re-organize Charlie's resturant into a club type scene wasn't much to write home about.
I'm with Charlie on this one in not thinking Olli's ideas would be appropriate for the type of customers she receives. Although, Olli's cocktails looked slamming. I also thought the cardigan Olli was wearing was atrocious. Unfortunately, he's still wearing it in today's episode because it's a follow on from yesterday. Then again, Jo could be wearing a shower curtain and still look smoking hot!!
4. What's Charly's problem?

Errr, he wanted her to tear up the floor so he could put lights in. And a VJ? Schneiders is mostly a restaurant which a good deal if not most of its traffic being meals during the day and coffee in the afternoon. Plus the occasional fancy ass, stuffy (again day) art showing or art sale events.
Serving Olli's cocktails? Sure why not. Anything else he suggested? TERRIBLE. Especially for Schneiders. And those cheapass looking glitter girland? Olli would deserve some stern "I'm concerned about your taste level" for it. (though I think it is one of those cases where it might look terrible in real life, but it is supposed to be just fine and vl life)
I do think that the writers are trying to please the fans by giving them something the fans have been asking for (Olli needs his own career, Christian should be supportive for a change), but so far it hasn't been very meaty.
Personally, I find it a bit uninspiring that Olli seems to really mostly want to go from bartender/waiter to only bartending/waiting/maybe some organizing in his own bar. Sure it's the closest to what he is doing, but I still wish they would have gone for something less boring. Particularly since Olli doesn't really seem to be interested in something upscale (like Schneiders). But hey, it's all good. At least it seemed to me like the various fans were all claiming that they wanted this type of feel good, no deep conflicts storyline.
Olli's career change
If I were Charlie, I would react the exact way that she did. Olli's presentation was more petulant child than a reasoned "business plan". It wasn't completely out of the blue, if you had seen the ep from early Feb where he made some of his drink samples for Nathalie and Carla, before Carla ran to go have champagne with the random flirty lesbian across the bar.
To disagree with Lola about Olli's choice of new career, given his (lack of) business presentation skills (and lack of college degree), his options are limited. This isn't Oakdale, so it's not a simple matter of talking to Lucinda to become CEO of Worldwide. Or in this case, of talking with Carla, Adrian or Ansgar to suddenly become a high-powered business exec. (he lacks the Von Lahnstein name for that neat trick)
Now, having success with NoLimits might give him a bigger and brighter future. It also will remain one of the show's main hubs for story-traffic. Heck, it's been a couple years since NL has had a make-over. (remember when it was the dreary pub when Jan was hiding from the police in those first episodes?)
I agree with you
I agree with you Zam regarding Olli's career opportunities. He has no degree and basically has been wandering without any vision. He's really only become stable since starting his relationship with Christian. He stayed on a cruise ship for five years waiting on people and cleaning their cabins, and now he continues to wait on people at Schnieders. Olli went to Ibiza and gained some experience in running a club almost by himself. And it seems like he really loves doing this, so he has to go with what he knows and loves.
Yes Zam...VL certainly isn't Oakdale, which i'm greatful for. I would rather have a storyline like this with Olli looking to partner with Gregor at Nolimits than him and Christian suddenly becoming detectives, running around town trying to solve the murder mystery of a drug addict they hardly knew, who took some bad stuff and sadly paid the price with his life. Olli taking over Nolimits may not seem as exciting on paper, but I like that it's based in reality.
I actually love the idea of Olli becoming part owner of Nolimits because it puts Ollian front and center on the show, not buried in the background since Nolimits is a central location for happenings on the show. I think there is some good stuff to come for Ollian in the future.

Which is what makes it such lousy/uninspiring dream material to me.It seems, both from a character and a writer POV like something that is done just from a practical POV which is why it what to me gives it such low potential as a storyline. It just seems really low on idealism. Not like Gregor wanting to fly, Rebecca wanting to design, Lydia wanting to work with children, Christian wanting to box. It seems like an uninspiring choice from a writing POV.
If that is really all the dream Olli is ever going to have on the show I feel really sad for him as a character.
This isn't Oakdale, so it's not a simple matter of talking to Lucinda to become CEO of Worldwide.
That would only be a problem if we were yearning for him to become a CEO within 24 hours, just like he became the owner of No Limits within 24 hours. He could have chosen something that takes a bit longer to come into fruition so we can actually genuinely buy that this is his dream, so we can see him work for it. People have to reinvent themselves later in life all the time.
He could have gone back to college, he could have tried to do something more into a social direction. Heck, even making him a travel agent would have been more interesting. If you look at other storylines, Lydia got fired from her job and banned from ever working in the profession, she then went from writing a blog to making it a commercial blog to maybe getting a radio show out of it. Rebecca hit a snag with her designing career and might now branch out into writing about fashion.
Maybe it just came out of the blue or maybe Olli just isn't selling it to me, but to me it just doesn't feel like a right choice for him as a character. It just feels like the writers went with the cheap road.
Lola...I have
Lola...I have to respectfully disagree with you. Personally, I think the track the writers have chosen for Olli is a good one. I think it's reasonable, realistic and in character with what Olli is all about. If the writers had chosen a career path for Olli, such as having him decide he wants to become a doctor or teacher of maths or something so left field that one has to suspense belief, then my response would have been...what were the writers smoking because it would look so prepostrous.
You mention about Rebbeca's career in design/writing, and Lydia with her blog/radio show, but lets be honest... both these career path storylines may sound good on paper but have made for uninteresting and boring storylines to watch. So just because the writers chose career paths for Rebecca and Lydia that sound intriguing, doesn't automatically equal exciting television.
Personally...I like the choice the writeers have made for Olli. I will wait to see how it all unfolds. I'm not going to make a rash judement just yet when the storyline hasn't even really begun. Who knows...Olli partnering with Gregor to run Nolimits could turn out to be one of the best storylines on the show. I say lets wait and see.
Lydia and Rebecca's stories
Lydia and Rebecca's stories might not be riveting television, but at least I feel like I get a sense from it about who these characters are. It seems to me that giving Olli that will give neither riveting story NOR give any sense of freshness/relatability to me. I accept it as part of the story, but while I freely acknowledge that there are worse ways they could have gone down, to me it's just not a story and position I particularly enjoy seeing Olli in. It just seems disappointing to pick something so stale and uncreative for a character as fun loving as Olli. I'm still not buying that this is genuinely Olli's dream.
Probably because Olli has spent so much time in this environment (as a waiter) yet has never expressed any real, dreamy deeper interest in owning a place. At least if his dream was something totally left field I could buy that he suppressed it so far, but the way it is, it just feels like a poor afterthought. It's the obvious choice for the show and in that also the uninspiring one.
To me it gives Olli something to do, and I do buy it as it being a project that Olli obsesses over for a while, but as a genuine dream? Dream storylines are supposed to be handled almost like love stories. What the show did by giving Olli the No Limits out of the blue is the same if he had just announced that he is deeply in love with Judith (even though there are at best a few passing scenes where they interact that maybe barely could be interpreted as interest) and then they move together and announce their love within 24 hours. Would you take something like that seriously? I sure wouldn't.
And Do Ho on the juke box?
afhickman
I don't know. I'm kind of with Charlie on this one. She doesn't need waiters with good taste, just waiters that taste good. And the luau thing is pretty tacky.
"The mountain has wings."
Too old?
Is Olli too old to go to University? I forget what age he's supposed to be. Couldn't he totally change direction professionally and decide to start University (Management or something). That would be a nice reason for a new set on VL with both our boys at the same University - with lots of cute guys arround to put some pepper into their relationship (meaning, testing it, but confirming their eternal love for each other..).
It just bugs me that he's so aimless. They make us believe that he's smarter than just being a guy relying on his aunt's money..
He must be bored out of his mind! I'd go nuts! He doesn't even seem to have a hobby. ..
