"Hollyoaks" video clip (5/20): The "Oh, for the love of God" update

Today's Hollyoaks clip is heartbreaking, as Kieron feels he has to choose between his love of God and his love of John Paul (personally, I don't get what's so difficult about it). Kieron has another conversation with the soon-to-be-unmasked Niall, and Niall tells him it's time to choose, and that he "can't have his wafer and eat it, too". Oh Lord.

Meanwhile, Mercedes is basically giving J.P. the same advice when Michaela flounces in, wearing the absolute most hideous pink bow I've ever seen, making her resemble a slightly less deranged Baby Jane. Immediately sensing gossip (the bow must act like an amplifier), she wants the juicy details, and when they refuse, she vows to find the truth.

Niall shows his true colors and, realizing that John Paul and Kieron will be together, gives Michaela a key to the flat so she can discover the truth. (NOTE: This scene is not in the compilation, but it's important to know).

Kieron and J.P. finally have the God talk, and Kieron delivers this soul crusher ..."there can never be a happy ending for us". John Paul gives it back, but even better:

"One day when you wake up and realize that your life is empty, and the God you've dedicated yourself to doesn't exist, you think of this moment, Kieron. You think about what it was like to be with someone, to have sex with someone, and you remember what you let slip through your fingers.

Unfortunately, while the boys are fighting, a certain pink-bow ho has let herself in, and records part of the conversation.

Well, we knew that sooner or later, Kieron was going to have a crisis of faith, and I have to give the show credit for not shying away from it. Kieron really is torn between his love of J.P. and his calling, and if he makes a decision we don't like, at least it's a decision that's understandable. The question is ... will he stick to it?

You can see today's clip of Hollyoaks after the break, and be sure to come back for more updates.

    Okay...now it's a mess

I was hoping this would end good (as I posted yesterday)...but this is not gonna end good for JP. Unless of course Kieron picks him over God.

Poor JP...what's with his messed up sisters? *throws hands in the air*

Oh...and I LOVED JP in this scene. I like that he stood up for himself and called Kieron out on his decision.

    Michaela?

Ok, as an american whose only exposure to HollyOaks is AE I'm not really versed on all the intricacies of this show, so please excuse if this is a silly question, but...

Is Michaela supposed to be a little....slow? And if so, is it meant like actually developmentally challenged a la Welcome Home Jellybean, or silly slow like Alice on The Vicar of Dibley?

Michaela is just a nosy brat

She's not supposed to be slow, I think just a naive, nosy, bratty, know-it-all, classic teanage girl.  I can't really recall one situation she's been a part of that she actually helped solve, as opposed to causing more issues and problems for the others involved.

    Here's an interview with

Here's an interview with the producer of Hollyoaks in which he talks about future storylines

    http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/soaps/a96114/bryan-kirkwood-producer-hollyoaks.html

here's the section on John Paul (Spoilers, don't read if you don't want to know)

John Paul / Kieron / Niall
"The summer months see Niall become more and more embroiled in the McQueen clan. He's living with Kieron while John Paul and Kieron's relationship take a turn for the serious. It's the new-found closeness with John Paul that leads Niall to turn his wrathful intentions onto his secret brother. Niall has a hand in Myra - and the community - discovering that John Paul's been having an affair with the local priest. The repercussions of that are set to continue right until the autumn - and there are shocking and dramatic consequences all around, especially when John Paul is forced to make a choice between his future and his past."

    Ok, i will.....

I will gladly admit I don't believe in God....I actually can't stand anything dealing with religion....

with that said, I do feel it's perfectly fine to believe in God or whatever if that's your choosing....

^ justaslongasyoudontshoveitdownmydamnthroatanddamnmetohell (i may have to call my therapist later...)

the point is...as weird as it freaking sounds....I don't understand what John Paul was doing when he told Kieron that the God he's dedicated himself to does not exist....

HUH? is he saying God in general does not exist or....what? Personally, if someone is having that big of an issue (god or the person they love) then it wouldn't be worth it to me. wait, what kind of priest is Kieron? I've known married priests before....

is Kieron's battle being with a man or just being with someone in general?? someone clear this up for me... -- NEVERMIND, rewatched it and obviously missed a part of it.

    From what I've gathered

Keiron is a catholic priest, so no married, let alone boy-love.

As for JP going on about God not existing, I'm not sure if he is an atheist, or if he was just lashing out

Does anyone who is a regular viewer know whether this came up when Keiron was living with the McQueens

    What do you mean?

If by this you mean the relationship? Yes. If not, would you clarify?
    brcksvg's picture

    What I meant

I was wondering whether JP and Kieron ever discussed JP's belief or lack thereof in God when he was in the house.
    Bountiful's picture

    jp's belief

As far as I can tell, this is the first time john paul has said anything about God not existing. It may simply have been something said out of anger. Only one of the siblings siblings, Carmel, has followed their mother's footsteps into Catholicism but John Paul's beliefs have never been mentioned in detail before.
    netogeno's picture

    Kieron is Catholic

So in theory he is not supposed to be with anyone, much less a man. I know, ridiculous. One of the reason I have been ok with this arc is how Kieron has been written. He aknowledges he is gay and he is a priest because of his faith, he is not a closeted gay man hiding in the priesthood. He is really having to struggle with two complete parts of himself.

As for JPs comment, I think he is just hurt and that would be something he would say to hurt Kieron. Or its just bad writing, did you notice that the dialogue in the apartment and the tape are different? In the first JP says "be with someone" and in the tape he "says hold someone".

So now that the producer say JP is going to have to chose between his future and his past (which basically means Craig coming back), Kieron is just a filler until then. As I have said before they are setting up a sunset ending for JP and Craig. Now it would be interesting if the go the other way, which would not be so bad. Because as much as I was rooting for those two crazy kids, half the time I just wanted to smack Craig in the head and make him come to his senses. Honestly, Kieron has been more respectfull and given JP his place a lot more than Craig ever did and with probably more limitations to do so.

I just hope JP doesnt suffer much more.

*nods* I loved the John Paul/Craig storyline, but I had the same urge you did to whack Craig upside the head. If they make it work narratively (and not just as a fan-assuaging gimmick), I would be fine with Craig coming back into John Paul's life. But if he stayed in Ireland forever, I would be just as fine. I'm more interested in John Paul getting good story arcs and development than in seeing John Paul+Craig=4EVAH.
