IMHO "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List" (5.7): Kathy at the Apollo

This week's episode of My Life on the D-List is certainly not the funniest of the season, but is definitely the most ambitious (concerning race and stand-up), and contains what may be the most cringe-inducing moment in the show's history.

Look below for the details about why Kathy will never be invited back to play at The Apollo Theater. Ever.

Kathy has been booked at The Apollo Theater in Harlem, and enlists the aid of several black friends to try and answer the question: Is comedy color-blind?

First up is Rachel True, Kathy's BBFF (Best Black Friend Forever), who gives some helpful tips about what not to do. You can see more of that conversation in the deleted scene below, in which producer John Hill cryptically mentions "there were things in this episode that we're not allowed to show, because of things that went down". Hmm ...

Next up is stand-up comic extraordinaire Katt Williams, who tells her point blank "no, comedy is not color-blind". There are definitely things that only work with particular audiences, and as Kathy heads off to NYC (after an amusing but pointless to this episode introduction to rapper T.I.), she's praying there will be black gay people in the Apollo audience.

Before she hits the stage, she meets up with Rev. Al Sharpton, who invites her on his radio show, and gives her such helpful advice as "don't say the 'n' word". Really?

The countdown to "the incident" begins when Kathy gets to The Apollo and hears the sound of ... happy children. It turns out that not only is she performing, but she'll be preceded on stage by a gaggle of fifty kids singing and dancing. This is not good. Kathy's act relies on being potty-mouthed, and happy children have a way of curbing that. Damn them!

She convinces herself that the kids will be gone by the time she goes on stage, and after Rev. Sharpton introduces her to the notoriously hard-to-please Apollo audience, she begins her act.

It starts off great, and she seems to have the crowd in the palm of her hand, but then ... she decides to throw caution to the wind, and brings out the "Octomom" jokes, and has some very adult things to say about all of the plastic surgery the "Octomom" has done to her face (including using a euphemism for a certain part of the female anatomy).

In the span of that one sentence, she completely loses the audience, and after some hasty changing of the subject, the band behind her starts playing, signaling that it's over for her. She says "thank-you" and makes a quick exit, and is accosted in the wings by a man who blasts her for "disrespecting the Apollo", and "permanently warping kids minds and sending them into a lifetime of therapy for saying the "p" word". Okay, I'm paraphrasing the last quote, but that was the jist.

She rushes to the exit and is anxious to make a quick getaway, after first apologizing to Rev. Sharpton, who seems to take it all in stride. In the limo she immediately calls Katt Williams, and after telling him what happens he responds with the funniest line of the night: "That is the greatest sh*t ever".

That breaks the enormous tension that had built up, and Kathy is able to laugh it off. But she learned a valuable lesson this week ... don't tell "p" jokes during Apollo Kid's Night.

Like I said, this was the most ambitious episode of the season, and that one infamous, cringe-worthy moment aside, It continues the season's resurgence. What did you think?

Next week's episode looks to be the highlight of the season, as Kathy becomes an advocate for marriage-equality. Can't wait!

Obviously, whoever booked Kathy was clueless about her act

or incapable of setting up a coherent program. Unless My Life As D Lister intended to pull a Bruno on it's viewers.

    It was actually the Apollo

It was actually the Apollo that came off looking bad.  They didn't do their homework, they booked an adult comedienne with children (and it would have only taken a VERY quick Google search to figure out how dumb this was) and then they treated her like crap.

I had great respect for the Apollo Theatre, and still honor it's legacy in black theatre, but it's management is obviously not equipped to book acts in the 21st century - or put together programs that complement each other.

    Big FAIL on Apollo's part.

    Kathy's best D-List episode

I agree Snicks, this was the most ambitious episode of the season, if not the series so far. Who would have thought the D-List would give such a great look into race and comedy. Definitely NOT the ending I was expecting. Didn't we all think she'd at least somewhat pull it off? And shame on the Apollo for booking her on Apollo kid's night. I thought Kathy reacted as well as she could--she must have been mortified. Props to her for saying 'thank you' to Rev. Al Sharpton before fleeing the scene, and BIG props for showing it all go down. This will give her lots of great new material.

    I agree

that it was the Apollo theater that looked stupid. Plus, you're going to try and tell me that those kids don't hear and say much worse at school, on the street, wherever? Much ado about nothing on the Apollo's part.

    Agreed

On top of that, she asked the stage manager about the kids being GONE before she went on as well. Then on top of THAT, they laughed at "whitney snorting crack" but utter the word pussy and they got all up in arms? B.S.

Oh well, it still made for great TV, and I'm looking forward to next weeks episode of Norma Gay!

    Many Viewpoints

There are many viewpoints that can be taken with Kathy's material a lot of the time. Ya know, I personally know how that joke was intended and I thought it was very funny, but when I first heard it, it felt like she was making fun of individuals with plump lips which can easily be taken as a racial stereotype. I don't think the problem was the word used as much as the fact that she unintentionally made people very uncomfortable. I think it's very true that comedy is not colorblind and when a white girl makes a joke about big lips at a traditionally African American establishment, things can get a little touchy.

The Apollo was a Great Idea!!

I was looking forward to this episode. The best part was Maggie saying that she thought it might be a bad idea for her to perform in Harlem. Hopefully Maggie won't use the guilt treatment of "I told you so."

The show was terriffic. It's hard to believe that an entire theatre would go silent to P*ssy. Oh those poor childen. I guess they've never watched Nip/Tuck where a character was referred to as Pussy Lips for at least 3 episodes.

Get a grip. She bent over backwards trying not to offend

Was the audience offended by the word or were they offended that she was making fun of a race of people that are sterotyped to have big lips in general?

What would happen if Gallagher smashed a watermellon at the Apollo?

    Oh please

Is this everyone's first time watching Kathy? She doesn't care who the audience are and she still challenges them. Remember she said to Maggie: she's special because she doesn't apologise.

Look at the number of shows she has been banned and re-banned from - it only shows her integrity and trueself, which is why we love her.

I love her so much that she doesn't care about children even when she just finds out about them just before a show starts. Who cares about children??? Enough already with children protection. Everytime I have to give way to a stroller or having to listen to screaming child on a plane..

    Kathy...get a clue!

    Hair Pick: Classic

The D-list moment of realizing Kathy was booked on Amateur night: Classic. The cringe moment of having Kathy interrogate T.I. on his upcoming incarceration: Classic. The camera shot of the teenager mouth-agape after the P word was dropped: Classic. That said Kathy needs to stop bringing up her assistance anxiety disorder every episode. Having a black comedian nick name him "Hair Pick" though classic, is bordering on torture.
