IMHO "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List" (5.4): Paris is my new BFF

After three episodes with Kathy trying to learn from Hollywood's mature "A-Listers", she decides to take on "Young Hollywood" ... with mixed results.

Journey below to find out why this episode of My Life on the D-List earns an up arrow, despite the presence of "Young Hollywood"'s Queen Vapid Debutante.

The episode starts off great, with Kathy trying to worm her way into Hollywood's elite youth, and what better way than try to get an appearance on a hot, hip CW show? She wants Gossip Girl, but has to settle for Privileged.

She meets up with hot lead actor Ignacio Serricchio, who's a good sport about playing along with Kathy's schtick, although one bizarre moment halfway through their meeting causes Kathy to be taken aback. See for yourself:

Kathy has about three lines on the show and continually flubs them (just ... perhaps ... purposely), and when she asks Team Griffin for their verdict on how she did, fabulous casting director Patrick Rush delivers my favorite moment of the night:

Kathy: Patrick, how'd I do?
Patrick: Margaret Cho is on hold.
Kathy: I'll have you know I have a stand-in!
Patrick: Hmm ... does she look like Chelsea Handler?

Kathy decides the next step is to put her mother in charge of her Facebook account, which works about as well as you would imagine. I absolutely adore Mama Griffin, especially when she's being mildly abused by her daughter.

The biggest laughs occurred when Kathy put her mom in front of the computer to update her page, which leads to talk of "teabagging" ... and more:

Unfortunately for me, that's really where the enjoyment in the episode ended. Most of the rest of the show was devoted to Kathy taking advice and running around Hollywood with Paris Hilton.

Ugh.

Some of this worked (for instance, the counter-girl getting her name wrong), but I really can't stand watching Paris for more than a few minutes. I much prefer Mama talking about updating "FacePlace", and Kathy having to ... fire her.

What did you think of this week's episode? For me, it didn't hit the heights that last week's Paula Deen show did, and I could've done with a lot less Paris, but there was enough good stuff to raise the arrow to the up position.

    "Skank" huh?

Wow.  I thought this website aimed to help eradicate misogyny (the root of homophobia).  I thought it was at least a site with feminist values (didn't Brent or Michael or someone write that at some point somewhere?)  What's up with calling Hilton a "skank"?  That was unnecessary.  And really, really offensive.

    I took out "Skank"

Although there was no misogynistic intent on my part. I've called men skanks on this site and no one has complained before.

I guess I could have been more specific and called her a "racist" or "homophobe".

But it was not my intent to offend. I apologize, and I won't use that word again.

    Oh give me a break!

Oh give me a break!  Removing labels does not change the contents of the package.  I'm sick of PC bullshit.  Good god, it's people like you who actually inspired Bruno.

We are all individuals, we have the right to express ourselves as we please.  Misogyny  cannot be attributed to calling someone what they are.  Take me for example, I'm a bitch.

    Kathy & Chelsea?

What a snarky, Hollywood bashing power couple they'd make! They should guest on each other's shows stat!

Should've Watched This Instead of "Weeds."

I DVR'd Kathy and watched "Weeds" instead last night.  Big Mistake.

I hope someone at AfterElton will do a piece on last night's episode of "Weeds;" an ugly, ugly episode from a gay perspective, and not just about (without spoilers) Nancy's decision at the end. The trivializing "Dirty Dancing" and the insulting gay-stereotyping erection jokes, the use of the word "f*gg*ts"...  in context of what happens, I'm kind of wondering if I ever want to watch that show again.

    I disagree

The story was totally in line with the characters on Weeds, along with the verbiage used.  When we begin to insist that there can be NOTHING negative about gays in storylines, then we start to dilute artistic integrity.  Weeds has been very supportive in gay storylines and such - this one was meant to show the dark side of both the gays and the straights in the show.  And I wasn't disappointed in the quality storytelling of both sides.

    I must agree

Snicks, I think your review this week was right on the mark. I could do without the Paris Hilton part, but I enjoyed the rest.

Let's go back to Paula Deen's house and spend more time with her son Bobby. I also got a kick out of Paula's gay, drunk, assistant.

    Ugh!

A few weeks ago I cringed during the phone-for-grammy-votes segment, and this week I was just embarrassed for Kathy in the scenes with Paris Hilton, which went on far too long.  IMHO, this season isn't measuring up to past seasons.

Snicks, you were very generous to give this episode an up arrow.

    You were correct about this

You were correct about this episode.  Too much of a bad thing, but I did think she saved it in the end with her monologue.  If she had started out with a warning this would have been easier to watch.

Next week is going to be great.  Betty and Don!

    Sick of PC stuff

Oh, puhleez.  After all the years of US putting up with being called truly awful names now 'skank' is off limits, in a review of Kathy Griffin no less?  Next it will be 'ho' and 'bitch'.  Sorry if those terms are offensive, but they have entered the street lexicon.

I agree that this episode of 'D List' was one of the worst.  Paris Hilton is not even vapid enough to earn the term.  Kathy is supposed to be making fun of this element of celebrity worship, not embracing it.  PH is about as deep as a puddle, and Kathy could have gotten in a few knocks about LA superficiality in there too.  This episode is not going to the Emmy nominating committee.  Maybe next week will be better with Betty and Mom.  Particularly enjoyed Kathy's comment about HD not being most people's friends.  Amen to that!  And no more Michael McDonald please.   He looks almost as psychotic as Tom.

And regarding 'Weeds,' I am seriously worried it has jumped the shark. When maternity is introduced as a major storyline, it's usually a sign the writers are tired.  Sad because I have loved this show for several years now. Fortunately, 'Nurse Jackie' follows and is the best thing on television in years.
