IMHO "Make Me A Supermodel" (2.04): Freak-out!

Last night was the fourth episode of the pretty much disastrous second season of Bravo's Make Me A Supermodel.

So how did last gay standing Shawn do, and why am I giving this episode (and the season) a down arrow? Prepare for Spoilers and snark!

Shawn was eliminated. That's about all that needs to be said about this episode, which featured guest Michael Bergin. It came down to Shawn and "I'm new at this, so I get a pass every time" Colin, and guess what, the judges gave Colin yet another chance.

As you can see in his elimination interview, Shawn was not happy with the judges, himself, or modeling in general:

So this ordeal has soured Shawn on modeling, and I don't blame him. It's obvious the show is manipulating the outcome to make sure certain "types" remain, while giving more worthy models the boot.

They obviously want to keep "The Modeling Virgin" (Colin), and "The Bad Boy With A Lot To Learn" (Branden), and "The Sourpuss" (Gabriel).

Oh, just go away

The season got off to a bad start when they decided too eschew the audience participation aspect that made last season so much fun, and it went downhill from there.

Worst of all this season were the additions of the creepy, vampirish Nicole Trunfio (who ... insists ... on ... stretching ... out ... every ... sentence ... beyond ... its ... breaking ... point), and the sour, ridiculous judge Perou, who tries to come off as some kind of bad-ass ... which is tough when you're dressed like Michael Jackson's chimp, Bubbles.

So this season gets a "meh" from me. They need to go back to what made the first season a must-see, namely audience participation (which made each week tense and thrilling), and models with more ... personality. Of the remaining contestants, only Jonathan and Sandhurst really stand out, so hopefully one of those guys will make it to the end.

But I doubt I'll be watching.

What about you? Still a fan of the show? Will you watch to the end, or have you given up?

    TBH

Honestly Shawn deserved to go, he was pretty bad. Not only is he too old and short to really be  a "supermodel" he was also a little strange. Its unfortunate there are no (openly) gay men left though. I will watch only for Jonathan, he is amazing and I agree this season is terrible.

    I agree

I agree. Shawns photos were never that good. Colin has so much more potential if he can just take the stick out of his ass....and at least in this episode you got to see Brandens naked ass...which was nice.

    meh

I mostly watched for the Ben+Ronnie last year - with nothing like that this season, I'm already bored.

    I've given up

The minute I saw that tool Michael Bergin as a "substitute mentor" I was out.  He's a total douche. He doesn't work anymore as a model or actor and the fact that they trotted him out as someone for the male models to "aspire" to be, really made me kind of sick. This guy RAN OVER SOMEBODY.

Anyway, ITA that this season totally sucks. Season 1 felt fresh, fun and exciting. It didn't take itself so seriously. The fashions were totally outlandish and homoerotic. This season is like going to the mortuary.

    A few reasons:

    1. The fashions are AWFUL. Remember last season's horse fetish line? FUN! Last night's freaky, studs taped to forehead BS. Not so fun.

    2. Perou- Are you serious with this guy? People PAY him?  He's an absolute moron. I want to ban him to a strip mall Glamor Shots in Scottsdale Arizona for the rest of his miserable life.

    3. Nicole Trufino- For like 2 episodes I thought she was attitude/cool/sexy. Now I'm so done. It's like talking to a amazingly beautiful girl at a party for a half hour before your brian kicks in and you realize that this is ALL there is. Then you head for the hors d vores table.

    4. The Fashion- I loved how the guys wore tights and no shirt for like every episode last season. And the clothes were at least memorable. This season I can't remember ONE catwalk except for last week's BS Freakshow.

    5. The Models- ALL boring. Even the gays. Last year we got Ronnie. This year we get Shawn? Sorry. No. I like the "I'm doing it for my daughter" chick but I'm kinda over her too. I hate how Sandhurst feels that his ballet background (A REAL career. Full grace and beauty)  is going to hinder his chances as a model. Please Sandy go back to dancing. PLEASE.

I have a feeling that Jonathan is bi. Have him seduce Branden, now THERE'S a show!

Here's hoping Season 3 brings back what made this show fun to begin with. For the rest of THIS season, I could care less who wins. I'm DONE.

Help Us, Janice Dickinson, You're Our Only Hope.

I gave it a try for two and a half episodes, but quit in the middle of the third when I realized I absolutely hate this seaon, and it wasn't getting any better. This season feels "Step It Up and Dance" level awful, which is to say, bottom of the Bravo barrel (and it suffers from a lot of the same problems as "Step It Up and Dance:"  bland contestants, detestable (and not in a fun way) judges, too many creepy homophobic asides about masculinity-- Perou's "is Chris a boy or a girl," etc.-- in a profession where sexual ambiguity can even be a career plus, etc.).

I agree that pretty much all the changes they made this season are nonsensical:  I thought "Top Chef"'s addition of the disastrous Toby Young couldn't be topped this year for "least welcome addition of a Bravo realty show judge," but Perou proved that theory entirely wrong (and, again, there are similarities-- wannabee Simon Cowells, anyone?-- that suggest the recent wrongheaded drift of these shows).

Another thing that bugged the sh*t out of me is the whole "Branden is a homophobe who's going to have to learn how to cope with gays" story.  In the aftermath of Prop 8, I have no patience whatsoever in watching this kind of crap on what should be a fun reality competition, particularly in the modelling industry of all places, unless the show's about the guy being told in no uncertain terms on the first episode "either you grow the f*ck up right now or you're off the show and probably not up to much of a modelling career." I can't think of many reality competitions where we have to watch the "education" of a racist or antisemite (most shows screen out these creeps beforehand, and its obvious this show knew in advance his viewpoint and is using it for cheap drama, which is despicable).  And now that they've booted both gay contestants off the show in only four episodes, but kept this piece of ignorant bigotted dung, do we even get to see an "education"?  Is much of the gay community really in the mood to watch this kind of thing play out right now even on a Supermodel show?

Branden, who's treated like some major pretty-boy model potential only looks like one of Janice Dickinson's third-string models to me, and Janice at least would have put this homophobic a**hole in his place in about the first five seconds of her show.  Come to think of it, the only thing that could save this season at this point would be an episode where Janice shows up. reads everyone the riot act, and boots one high heel up Branden's posterior and the other up Perou's.  Let me know if that happens; I'll start watching again.

I agree that "Step It Up and

I agree that "Step It Up and Dance" was a train wreck last year, but the winner, Cody Green, is starring as Riff on Broadway in "West Side Story" and getting good reviews, so it was good for someone. That said, this show -- uck! Last season I never missed an episode and I admit that I hung on every elimination (and not just for Bronnie, but also Perry, Casey, Frankie, Holly, Shannon -- the whole gang!). But now it's a bust and a half. It's the Tyson Show, and I thought he was the wrost thing on it last year. The judges are horrible, the challenges stupid, and models have the personalities of moths. Sheesh! What IS wrong with Bravo these days? That should be a column for sure!
    colmd's picture

    perhaps i'm mistaken

I don't think they have a "Branden is a homophobe who's going to have to learn how to cope with gays" storyline. As far as I remember in the first shoot he was with Chris. He just felt a bit uncomfortable cos he was not used to being around gay men. But he did the shoot and has not said another thing since about it. He mentioned in the last episode about growing up without a masculine father figure and so he wanted to be a fireman because as a child, he thought that was the most masculine job. Perhaps he questions his own masculinity. But I don't think he is homophobic at all. If he was spouting crap they would have put it in the show to make it more interesting.

And i think Janice would have said "get over it and get the shot because that is what the client is paying for". At of the day its a "modelling show" and the people who are most modelesque stay in and work.

On a sidenote, I forgot that Jordan "moany-arse" was signed with Janice. She must be going through all the reality shows.

    Branden's homophobia.

Hi, colmd, Branden also brought up his discomfort with gays in the second episode, not just the first. In the 2nd episode, it was in the context of the apartment the models share. In fact, in that episode, Branden tries to link his discomfort with gays to "something that happened to (him) when he was a kid," which sounds a lot like he's leading into the old equating gays with pedophiles canard. Several AfterElton readers were upset with his behavior after that episode, and they probably have more interesting takes on it than I do, so you might check the archives, if you're interested. Like I said before, I gave up on this season halfway through the third episode, so Branden may not have said anything else about "teh gheys" since episode 2, but as both of the first two episodes had him making homophobic remarks, it sure seemed like a trend in that contestant's "story" to me, and not one I feel like sitting through these days when I just want to see a fun reality show.

    thanks

    Hey Bobby,

Thanks for clarifying that. Obviously some people are going to be offended and upset by him saying he is uncomfortable being around gay people. Maybe its just personal opinion but I wouldn't have classed being uncomfortable with actually being homophobic, At the end of the day I take all these programmes with a pinch of salt and let things go over my head. But like i said its just personal taste and each to their own.

    thanks again.

I felt pretty bad for Shawn

because he was always mentioning and unapologetic about talking about his relationship with his husband which was the reason he wanted so desperately to become a Supermodel.  His courage for speaking out and up was brave, bold and completely a remarkable feat, for all the people in middle-America, that have no clue about gay people and their everyday lives.  However, I think he set himself up for failure because he was putting too much emphasis on the fact that he was gay.  When it came time to actually do what he had to do and come and turn that place out, He was a bit a no-show because you know that he had it in him but he was too worried about everything else and not showing up.  Yes, he was the last gay standing, which was a feat within itself but to constantly mention that in every casting or photo shoot was bit ridiculous.  The fashion industry is flooded with gay and lesbians on every level because even though they have Tyson, (who seems like the only 'alleged' straight guy in the industry), he is still questionable to me because he spend some years defending his sexuality.  "I'm not gay!" was all you heard whenever anyone talked about or to Tyson Beckford.  I think he is so hot but after hearing all the gay hype/ gay panic that was surrounding him a few years ago, I can do without being a fan of his.  It seems to me Tyson isolated many of his gay male fans and was actually biting the hands that feed him daily.  Regardless of women being big fans of fashion and everything associated with fashion, when it comes down to recognizing eye-candy and hard bods, I'm sorry to state this but it starts with gay men.  Once the gay stamp of approval is put on someone, everyone can jump on the bandwagon and relish in our discovery.  I don't have to run a list of male celebs that have benefitted from the Queer Eye.

Being gay should have been Shawn's advantage over the other contestants because he has a better understanding of the hidden beauty, that we mask at times and other times is front and center.  Shawn has the face and the body but he has to have the heart of a damn lion and get out there and just give it all he has.  Since he has been eliminated now is his chance to work his 15 minutes of fame and turn it into a career, like other reality stars.

About 18 year old Brandon, who lost his father at a younger age, which is sad for anyone but now to be in conflict about his masculinity and entering the world of fashion, sounds like a train wreck about to take place.  Is there a casting couch in the modeling world?  I have to answer 'Yes'.  Maybe it's not as prevelant as many other media outlets but I know it exist in the world of high fashion.  Brandon is in for a worldwind of emotions and since he got through his first gay shoot with ease, the next million gay shoots will be a breeze.

As much as I hate the

As much as I hate the judges this season, I do think that they have kicked out the right models so far. Shawn really did deserve to go home this week. I dont see anything ''supermodel'' in him and he's way too old to be one anyway. Plus, he wasn't all that good in the photoshoots or the catwalk.

As for the rest of the season, of course I'll keep on watching because I decided to watch it in the first place for the sexy Jonathan. He is the best looking guy out there with a super hot bod and personality and I'm seriously hoping he wins the whole thing.

I miss Ronnie Kroell on my TV

I hate this season too...all for the same reasons you mentioned. Last season, Bravo and the cast created a wonderful show that was fun to keep track of during the week and a blast to watch every Thursday night. This year, they pretty much took everything that was awesome about the show and trashed it. It's really too bad.

Today Bravotv.com posted an interview with Ronnie. It was wonderful to see him on their home page again. I really miss seeing that boy on my TV.

Read the interview here...and leave a comment for him. He really is a wonderful guy...and pretty darn sexy too! Here's a few of his latest pics for your pleasure:

He is still as hot as ever...

    Enjoy!

    I totally agree. They ruined

I totally agree. They ruined this show completely by taking away the audience element and adding judges who are obnoxious and annoying -- why should we want to watch these unpleasant people? And the models are humorless and devoid of any personality. Yawn. You fail, Bravo.
