IMHO "Project Runway" (6.1): Welcome To Los Angeles

As you can see from Tim Gunn's approving look, any worries we had about Project Runway moving to Lifetime have been alleviated. It's the same show we know and love, and this year promises even more of the combination of artistry and drama!drama!drama! we've come to expect.

Look below to see how Team Gay fared, and if our first impressions will help us predict the winner.

Team Gay: Christopher, Nicolas, Mitchell, Ra'mon-Lawrence, Malvin and Johnny

Six of the eight guys this season are gay (well, Malvin is "in flux"), so it was inevitable that the gay drama gene would display itself at some point during the season, and wouldn't you know it ... the premiere had two crisis situations, both courtesy of the gay designers.

This week's challenge was to create a dress for the red carpet at the Emmy Awards, and almost immediately Johnny has a major meltdown. Ordinarily meltdowns are one of my favorite parts of Project Runway, but this one was sad and serious, as former meth addict Johnny was having trouble coping without his support system. Fortunately Tim was there to help him through it (is there anything Tim Gunn can't do?), and he's able to get back on track.

The other crisis was more typical, as Mitchell had problems with his model's measurements, and had to scrap his original design. At the last minute he created a hilariously sheer flouncy thing that would be perfect on the red carpet ... at the Adult Video Awards.

Heidi Klum, Nina Garcia, Michael Kors

When it's time for the judging, Heidi Klum, Nina Garcia, Michael Kors and guest judge Lindsay Lohan (who actually wasn't as annoying as I expected) put Christopher, Ramon and Johnny in the top three ... and poor Mitchell in the bottom three.

Fortunately for Mitchell, "free-spirited" female designer Ari created something even more hideous (as Michael put it "a disco soccer ball"), and she's sent packing ... which means all our gays are safe for another week.

I can't say for sure, but I think it may have been the first time in the show's history that the top three of the week were all gay designers. Christopher gets the win this week, which means he has immunity from next week's challenge.

So to sum it up ... Team Gay ruled this week!

First Impressions

Ramon, Mitchell, Malvin

  • Ramon: Smart, talented, and confident (maybe a little cocky). Chance of winning is ... high.

  • Mitchell: Expect lots of drama. Thankfully, he has the goods to back it up. His jiggle dress showed that at the very least, he's got guts. Chance of winning is ... moderately high.
  • Malvin: Needs to get over himself. His two big quotes were "I don't watch the red carpet. I don't differentiate between different colored carpets" and "My dress is ineffable. You can't really describe what it is. No one can really ever describe the type of garments I do, there's not a vocab for them yet". Sure there is. It starts with "sh" and ends with "itty". Chance of winning is ... meh.

Nicolas, Johnny, Christopher

  • Nicolas: Barely heard from this episode, so the only thing we can tell is that he's a dead ringer for Cynthia Nixon. Chance of winning is ... unknown.
  • Johnny: Drama!Drama!Drama! May become the Ongina of Project Runway. Chance of winning is ... could flame out next week, or win the whole thing.
  • Christopher: *sigh* *swoon* Okay, I've composed myself. Christopher proved to be the star of the premiere, with his modesty and emotional victory (although he may have gone to the "I didn't train at some hoity-toity institute" well too often). He seems like a genuinely nice guy, which coupled with his good looks and natural talent could make him the breakthrough star of this season. Chance of winning is ... very high.

Of course first impressions are sometimes way off-base, so we'll have to wait til we see more of these guys to come to any real conclusions.

So what did you think of the premiere? Was it the show you remember, or was there something off about it? And what did you think of Team Gay in their first challenge?

    Mitchel's Chances High?

The original dress was a freakn nightmare to begin with. I agree that Christopher is too cute. Gotta love those Great Lakes Boys! oh yeah it "seams" (yeah I know bad pun but no worse than "de-Nyle") he has talent. I really thought the lesbian looking one should have stayed. At least she created something from start to finish. Unlike Mitchel who quick stitched 2 shear curtains together and punced a hole in the top. Chucking his model down the runway in granny panties. I don't even want to start on how annoying the Ambiguous MR? Malvin was with all that crap he spouted

    Allen's picture

    Poor Mitchell?

Are you kidding me? He was a complete douche toward his model. Mitchell was LACKING Southern charm I come to expect my Georgia boys.

Congrats to the homeboy! Who knew the boy I first met in 1999 would win the first challenge? I'm so proud! :)

    yes, poor Mitchell!

    i must respectfully disagree!

if you design something fitted, you need to know the precise measurements. (measure twice cut once... or is that carpentry?)  and there is absolutely NO reason for a model to lie about those... once she already has the job!

granted, he could've been more gentlemanly about it.

    I'm with ya Snicks

I was swooning just as much for him too. In that picture, I just noticed how much he resembles my favorite gay music artist Eric Himan (like a younger version or something), whom I have been crushing on as well. I did laugh when he hadn't heard of half the stuff the others knew, not because I find him incompetent, but at the fact he beat out possible thousands of other Americans through sheer force. That, and I also had no idea what they were saying a few years ago, before I knew PR existed.

    Jimmy's picture

    Ari

Did anybody else think that Ari was a dead ringer for Samantha Ronson? I thought Lindsay would have kept her in the game for that reason alone.
    Kate's picture

    You weren't alone!

All the people I watched it with and I thought that too.  The fact that Ronson is contantly trying to show how "edgy" she is and Ari seemed determined to show how "crazy" she is didn't help.

    Oh Man!

I don't watch this show, so I didn't know Michael Kors was going to be on!  I practially worship that guy (I'm even wearing one of his shirts today).  I hope I can catch it in a rerun this weekend.

And he's been on every episode for the past five seasons!

    What's up with all these

What's up with all these "free spirited" girls who just end up looking like crazies?

I want Johnny to win, forever and ever by the way. And that Cora(?) girl with the yellow-ish dress with the fancy front. I was sure she was going to make the top three, at least.

    Scudder's picture

    Carol? Cora?

I think I know the dress you mean and I was shocked it didn't make the final three.  I also thought they were too hard on Ra'mon - I thought that dress was gorgeous and could see tons of stars wanting to wear that on the red carpet.

Ari kinda reminded me of Lupe from a past season.  Yes, innovation and expirimentation are all well and good, but you can't make violently ugly clothes and expect  people to respond.

I did think all of the bottom three were pretty atrocious and wouldn't have been shocked if any of them them got the boot.  Ari's was crazy ugly (and sooooo not red carpet in any way).  Qristyl's looked cheap, tacky, and poorly made.  And to paraphrase one of my fave Nina Garcia line, "I question her taste level".  Ironically, I think Mitchell may have been saved by the fact that his model couldn't fit the renaissance fair monstrosity he made for her.  Not sure how he survived by sending down a sheer mumu with a ruffly collar.  Eeek!

Christopher is a cutie.  Malvin seems insufferably pretentious.

    Miz Liz's picture

    Lets face it

The bad were all so bad, any one of them could have been sent packing.

I figured that Qristal would get the boot for the tacky mess she created, that Mitchell would be saved because they seemed to take pity on the measurement problem.  (Although I do have to ask, if you're making a dress for someone based only on her measurements, is it really wise to go with something so form fitting?  It's usually for reasons like that that they aren't typically so forgiving.) And, I thought that Aries would be kept around for a while for entertainment purposes - I thought she'd be the Blaine of season six.

Also, I think I agree with you about a certain yellowish dress that didn't make the final three.  If it's the one I'm thinking of, I thought it was stunning.  (But I work in education, not fashion.)

    I know what you mean!

I am so over these vapid contestants trying to hide their lack of talent under a giant wave of "LOOK HOW CRAZY I AM!!"  They probably know that if they act like a spectacle, the producers will keep them around longer for more dramatic TV.  I'm thrilled that this trend didn't fly last night.

    Yay!

I love this show, and I'm so happy that it's back!

I haven't watched it yet, so I can't comment on it.. I'm glad you liked the episode though, Snicks. It looks promising. I was really afraid Lifetime would ruin Project Runway, de-gay it and take all the fun out of it, well, looks like they stayed true to it, and I'm thankful for that.

Just one question though.. Why LA? Isn't NYC the fashion capital of the world? Is LA known for fashion at all? Sorry, I don't live in USA, so I have no idea..

Harvey Milk: You gotta give 'em hope.

    Lior's picture

    Milan is the fashion capital

Milan is the fashion capital of the world with Paris a close second.  NY is the fashion capital for the US; my guess is that with most TV and movie production in LA it was an easier and/or less expensive shoot location for the show.
    ColumbusOH_Brit_Fan's picture

    LA's Garment District

In a very forced, expository manner, one of the contestants asks that very question of "Why LA?" One of his peer's, in just as forced a manner, explains that the LA garment district is actually larger than NY's.  I assume they are measuring square miles and not prestige.  I chalked it up to new location for a new network.  I was just relieved to learn there is a Mood in LA.  I would hate to not hear Tim announce "Okay, we're heading to Mood!"

    Woot!

"This week's challenge was to create a dress for the red carpet at the    Emmy Awards"

Wasn't the challenge actually to just create a red carpet look? And then specify which red carpet it was for? I think I remember Christopher saying that his was for the VMAs, and MItchell said that he originally intended his to be worn to the Acadamey Awards. Just sayin.

Anyway, I liked Christopher a lot, so glad he won.  I also liked Mitchell though, and I didn' think that the original version of his dress was ugly.  I'm interested to see how well he does next week. I'm really hoping that he wins or something.

So happy that Lifetime didn't mess the show up!

    Malvin & Ari = Santino?

I think it's funny with designers like Malvin and Ari, and actually with Santino in the show that precded it--I think there's a problem if you have to keep telling everyone how ahead of everyone you are.

A few comments. Why did Heidi keep calling Ra'mon 'Roman'? Good for you, Christopher, I'm pulling for ya! Malvin, you are beautiful, but you might want to get over yourself a bit. Mitchell, you kept changing how many inches the measurements were off. They started at five inches and went to seven by show's end. Maybe they were off an inch and you were throwing a girlish hissy fit? I think you are lovely, and have some talent, but I would NOT lament that strange tufted bathrobe from the thirties you were working on. Try again. I was glad they sent home that skinny KC airhead, so work it so you can deserve the reprieve. Johnny, what ARE you doing in this kind of pressure in your first year of recovery? Didn't we advise you not to do that? No big changes for AT LEAST one year (maybe more, depending on your sponsor). Ra'mon, you are stunning. I am not sure you or Nicolas have what it takes. Show us stuff. So far you are hiding in the pack.

There, I put my two cents in. I feels bettah!

Also, Heidi can't seem to pronounce Marie Claire correctly.  This is going to drive me nuts every time I hear it.   Nina Garcia is going to have to get a job with another magazine.

    Scudder's picture

    Yes!

Glad I was not the only one who noticed that.  She was mostly pronouncing it "Mary" instead of "Marie", but sometimes pronounced it even weirder.

Ari was just a little scary

She was just a little too free spirited for me.  It would have been great if she presented an amazing dress and showed skills that belied her persona.  But, when she said she didn't sketch, you knew she wasn't going to last.

BTW,sweetie.  The challenge was to design a dress for any red carpet event.  In fact I think that Scary Ari designed hers for the VMA red carpet.

All things considered it's going to be a very interesting season.

    Enjoy your day!

    Top Gunn

This isn't one of my favorite Bravo shows, but watching it I was struck by the fact that the Emmys have screwed Tim Gunn. Why is Heidi Klum getting a solo Emmy nomination again over Gunn? She makes some comments introducing the runway section, dishes on some designs and then dismisses the loser. To me, what Gunn does is much more award-worthy. He brings such professorial professionalism to everything he does, from his constructive comments about the clothes to his counseling with the contestants, and this episode, most notably with Johnny. This year's Emmys nominated Tom Colicchio and Padma Lakshmi (from ''Top Chef'') as a team; the same thing should happen (at least) with Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum.

    This is just a theory

It's up to TV shows to select its stars, writers, etc and nominate them for Emmy Awards, so the fact that Heidi is one of the producers of PR may have something to do with Tim being overlooked.  But it's just a theory.

    ColumbusOH_Brit_Fan's picture

    I think Tim makes PR

If Tim was not on the show, it would not be the success that it is.  Just look at Top Design.  That show should have had tons of potential, but, for me, it fell flat.  I think that what it was missing was a really compelling person to tie the episode together.  I believe that Tim delivers that like gangbusters!  Tom Colicio (sp?) does the same thing for Top Chef.  There was a nice guy on Top Design that tried, but he was just a little dull.  Somehow, Tim walks around all reserved but he is still hilarious and lovable.
    Lvng1Tor's picture

Tim Gunn should get an Emmy Nod

Tim carries this show. I look forward to his honest and amusing feedback to the contestants. He has just the right mix of straight forward critic with a dash of humor and encouragement. Wish I'd had mentors like him in my business. He never seems to be posturing just to get that great one liner out or to look fabulous. You get the impression he really cares about the contestants reaching their potential. I don't get that feeling from the judges. They are good but often you ca see them reaching for the perfect zinger so as to top what another judge has said.
    ColumbusOH_Brit_Fan's picture

    Judges not helpful

What kills me the most about the judges is how they will praise one person and condemn another and give the same justification for both.  I don't have a good example off the top of my head, but how unpredictable is it whether they are going to say "This is so bold, so creative.  True, it isn't actually wearable, but it has such a strong point of view!"  Then to another wild outfit, they are like, "What was he thinking?  This is unwearable!"  I know that I have heard them criticize one person for not sticking to the challenge and doing what was asked and criticize another for being "too literal" and not going beyond the challenge.  They also will give a contestant grief for doing the same thing too often, but then the contestant does something totally different and they tell them that this doesn't look like their work or they have abandoned their strengths.  In one episode, they literally had two people standing side by side and gave them conflicting criticisms (I wish I had taken better notes so I could refer to the specific incident).  Maybe I am just an idiot, but I think that I have seen every episode at least once and I never know what to expect the judges to like or not like.

    Christopher <3

I'm so exited the show is finally back, and this season may become my favorite one yet. Christopher is so cute and talented, so he is definitely my favorite to win this time. It was nice to see Mitchell stay, but I was sad to see Ari go, I really wanted to see more of her work. I'm also happy to know that Christina Aguilera will be guest judging this season, her episode will be awesome.

    I actually quite like

I actually quite like Malvin, even if I'm probably the only one who does... and no matter how strange Ari's dress was, I think Mitchell should have left. I don't think his dress would have done well if he had actually completed it. At least Ari's was interesting. Ra'mon's dress was also really nice.

    It's official!

Many were so thrilled to hear that that Project Runway is officially moving to Lifetime. The show originally began on Bravo network. Nevertheless, people who like to see people wearing ridiculous clothes that no one should ever buy are now on the lookout for Project Runway Season 6 Episode 1. The show is one of the most popular reality competition shows on TV, and a lot of people would give cash today to get an advance DVD of Project Runway Season 6 Episode 1. Millions will be watching the set, to see the tension under fire, the ridiculous impractical clothes, the expert observations by Tim Gunn, the ridiculous impractical clothes, Heidi Klum, and the ridiculous impractical clothes!
