IMHO "True Blood" (2.5): Never Let Me Go

After four stellar episodes, the fifth show of the second season of HBO's True Blood isn't quite at the same level, but there's still plenty to recommend it, including a look at when Eric was turned (here's a hint: he was a Viking, and not one from Minnesota), and Jason getting a helping hand while bathing.

Look below for the top ten reasons why this week's episode earns an up arrow.

10. - Hoyt and Jessica continue their sweet Pleasantville-esque courting. We learned a couple of things about Hoyt in this episode including the fact he moves his lips when he reads, and he wears pajamas (I'm not sure, but they may be Garanimals).

9. - I feel bad for Jason. The poor guy wants to do what's right, and he has a good heart, but his innate stupidity and hot body always betray him. He helps out arch-enemy Luke, which only seals the deal with the predatory Sarah.

8. - I have to give the actors props for getting through that bathtub scene with a straight face. When a trembling Sarah sat down next to Jason's bathtub, grabbed a loofah, and said "Mary Magdalene washed the feet of Jesus, and dried him with her hair ... isn't that lovely?", I literally choked on my laugh.

7. - "Let me reward you, Jason. Let me help you find your way back to joy."

6. - I'm so glad that Lafayette is healthy again, but he's obviously not the same guy he was before he was chained up in that dungeon. I hope he gets his spark back soon.

5. - In what comes as not much of a surprise, we finally find out Daphne's secret is that she's a shapeshifter  just like Sam. We know because she transforms into a doe (a deer, a female deer), which shocks the hell out of Sam. So what about the scratches on her back? Is she being controlled by Maryann? Hmm ...

4. - Speaking of Maryann, she continues to manipulate Tara. She invites herself to move in to Sookie's house (because the mansion wasn't really hers, it belonged to a "client"), and when Tara tells her to get lost, she shows up at Merlotte's that night and uses her Maenad power to force everyone to dump verbal abuse on Tara. So not only can Maryann get the party started, she's also that one girl who gets drunk too soon and pukes in the punchbowl thereby ruining the party for everyone.

3. - When Tara comes home, exhausted and weak from all the crap flung at her, Maryann is at the kitchen table, dressed like Gran (the whole thing was very Big Bad Wolf), and comforts her til Tara breaks down and tells her she can stay.

2. - Back in Dallas, Sookie is by turns horny, defiant, and annoying, as she tries to reach out to fellow telepath Barry. He's scared to death of the Dallas vampires finding out his secret and when later she asks about his whereabouts, we learn that he up and quit. We also meet Dallas vampires Isabel and Stan, and Sookie (whose outfits are just getting more hilarious each week) offers to infiltrate the Fellowship of the Sun to find out what their plan is.

1. - By far the best scene in this week's show was Eric's flashback to when he was turned. We knew Eric was old, but it turns out he was a Viking (I wonder if he enjoyed some Sverhoeven Krispies with his cocoa after a night of raping and pillaging. My undying love to whomever gets that reference).

We learn that his maker is the much-discussed, missing-in-action Godrick, who looks like civilization's first emo kid. That's why Eric is so adamant about rescuing him.

Speaking of makers, Bill is about to be re-introduced to his, as the final scene in the episode shows the Civil War-era vampire who turned him, now modern and out for his blood.

This was definitely a good episode as it answered some important questions, but somehow it just didn't flow as well as the previous outings.

What did you think? Are Godrick and Eric more than just maker and ... mak-ee (or is that just wishful thinking)? Is Lafayette going to be in more trouble when Pam shows up at Merlotte's next week? Will Jason "find his joy"?

    Getting better all the time!

The best lines for me were when Sam & Daphnie were about to have sex on the pool table & Sam said " nice rack" to which Daphnie replied "nice balls"

Oh thoses Krispies! Wern't they a treat that Rose Nylund would make for the Girls???

It says 'balls' on your face

"Nice balls" is now the only compliment I will dispense.

Did anyone else expect (hope?) that Eric would start crying blood tears after his Viking flash-back?  Maker/make-ee relationships are getting more and more interesting; I'd love for that to be explored more.  We've already seen a couple examples:

    Bill/Jessica - father/daughter
Eric/Pam - big brother/younger sister (I'm still trying to figure this one out)
    Eric/Godric - ???

A big thumbs down to Sarah for sexing up Jason - he's trying to turn his life around, you brazen hussy!

And Maryann is getting more and more dangerous; I liked her better when she was only slapping Karl around, not putting the psychological mind-fuck on Tara.  And getting Eggs in on the act?  Not cool.

On a side note: any guesses as to what Tara's mom tried to give her for her birthday?  My mind tells me it's a bible, but I want to believe it would be something more interesting.

    Not sure if this helps

Godrick is a major departure from the books. No real mention of Erik's maker is made until the most recent book. Then again, Erik became a major character in the television series much more quickly than he did in the books.

Take it for what it's worth, but Erik's maker in the books (who has not, to date, been named) turned Erik specifically to be a sexual companion. While this wasn't Erik's preference, a newly turned vampire is very reliant on his maker and there are issues of loyalty no human can understand, so he was in a very long sexual relationship with his maker. However, I don't recall the books speaking about how that association came to an end, but they are unequivocal that Erik is entirely hetersexual in preference and practice at this point.

    Thanks

Thank you! It's very much apprecited. Unfortunately it doesn't tell us much since the series hasn't borrowed heavily from the books. In this case, I hope they borrow at least a little bit ;)

    Not quite right

Eric's maker in the books was a roman soldier named Appius and Eric did admit that a young vampire finds all things sexual exciting and that he did grow, in time, to find the man on man sex to be enjoyable. He also slept with young Bernard in the 3rd book to help Sookie.

I wouldn't describe Eric as being totally hetero. Not by a long shot.

I'm actually finding the show a bit of a bore the last two episodes. I miss the excitement of some action. This show had nothing in that manner. While character driven is a great thing when done properly, too much makes for a boring show. Things need to pick up quickly or it's going to be on my wait til its over list to watch.

I agree about Godric and Eric

There was some serious subtext or not-so-sub-more-in-your-face text going on there. Godric looks like some nice eyecandy. Then again I was watching at 3:30 in the morning... But there was some sexiness there.

I just want to give Lafayette a big hug. A big, big hug.

    LOL....YES!

I wonder if he enjoyed some Sverhoeven Krispies with his cocoa after a night of raping and pillaging.

Thank you for making my day with that comment! It made me laugh far longer than it probably should have.

Also can we get rid of Bill and Sookie and have the Eric and Lafayette Hour with maybe a little Jessica and Hoyt thrown in. I can't remember a het couple I'e enjoyed watching more in over two years.

    Godrick and Eric!?

Was it just me or did Godrick's portrayer (and the character himself as I assume youthfulness was the point) look underage? That would make for a creepy pairing no matter the Vampire's true age. True, Vampires are predators, but I would hope there's a line that is drawn -_- Then again, if

    Maybe it's just because I

Maybe it's just because I am young enough that most of the male leads, Bill and Sam, are way too old for me, but I thought Godric was just plain beautiful. He was perfect, hot and powerful, and just everything I could imagine in a hot vampire. The actor was born in 1989, making him one of the few on the show around my age, and to me the character looked like a teen, not a child.

Also, remember times change. In ancient Rome girls were married at 13. As soon as they were old enough to have children they were considered women. So if we're talking about underage, that's a pretty modern concept.  So it's not like when Godric was turned it would have been creepy.

Besides, even though for me, big age differences are a squick factor, Godric looks like he's late teens. Besides, Godric is the older one in the relationship, so it's not like Eric took advantage of him, and the fact that he looks younger, honestly makes it's interesting. He looks young but he's really older, and not what he'd seem at first appearance.

Also, I'm a huge Anne Rice fan, and her vampire Armand was 17 and always described as a boy, and his maker/lover was much older.

    Marius and Armand

Thanks for mentioning Anne Rice. With Erik (Eric?) being a Marius look-a-like (also, Marius was half-scandinavian, half roman), I did some high-pitched squeeing when Godric was shown and looked very much like Armand. I wonder if the writers are aware of the parallels and I hope they keep exploring this. Armand and Marius were always my favourite couple in the Vampire Chronicles.

    More!

I got chills watching Godric explain to Eric, in his very own way of course, what he had to offer. It's what I called the first Anne Rice moment for me of the series. I'm also a big fan of Anne Rice's works and that scene had the power and depth of Anne's writing. I do hope we get the pleasure of seeing more of Eric's past, especially as it pertains to Godric, because I have a feeling it's deliciously complicated.

Yes, the Krispies taste better than they smell, but doesn't a lot of things?

I was really hoping for a little phone sex between Jessica and that adorable Hoyt.  Maybe later.

Has anyone else noticed that Jason went from briefs to boxers?  What's up with that?

And MaryAnn needs to leave poor Tara alone.  That poor girl is screwed up enough.

    This entire time I was

This entire time I was expecting Godrick to be this old-looking, noble vampire. I was wonderfully surprised to see that he was a beautiful young man my age covered in tattoos.

One thing that confuses me...why does the author of the books (or is it Alan Ball?) claim that all of the vampires are pansexual when a lot of them clearly have a very strong preference for one gender over the other? Like Evan Rachel Wood's character seems like she'll be very gay, and Erik seems very straight...

Although, there is a lot of homoerotic subtext between Erik and guys on this show. Lafayette, Godrick, and even a little bit with Bill. I will be EXTREMELY disappointed if they don't have Alexander Skarsgard make out with at least one guy on this show. I mean, c'mon Alan Ball! Really!

    Libby's picture

    The author has pointed out

through Sookie's observations, that most older vampires have done it all when it comes to sex. In the words of Eric in the last book, all things sexual are exciting to a young vampire and they like to experiment. His maker in the books turned him to be his boytoy and Eric said he had never been with a man before but that he got to like it after a while.

But I"m with you. I hope we see some Eric loving soon.
