IMHO "True Blood" (2.10): New World in my View

If last week's episode of HBO's True Blood was the best of the season, then this week's episode was ... well ... certainly the most over-the-top outing. While some of it didn't work, there was enough to tilt the arrow upward.

Look below to see the top ten reasons why this episode earned another recommendation.

10.: Who knew Maxine Foytenberry would be such a hoot? A cackling, horny vision in pink, she looks like a black-eyed Hostess Sno Ball (and she has mad Wii skillz).

9.: Maxine to Jason: "Why don't you offer yourself up to me, Jason Stackhouse ... you dirty ... little ... monkey."

8.: Speaking of Jason, he gets to have his Bruce Campbell moment as he "prepares for war" against the monsters in town ... with a chainsaw and nail gun.

7.: Throwaway moment of the night - When Hoyt mentions that Daphne was working at Merlotte's, Jason's ears (and I'm sure another part of his anatomy) perk up and he says hopefully There's a new waitress at Merlotte's?

6.: Jason's rescue of Sam is inspired. He starts by announcing "I have come ... and now I am here", and stands on a car, shirtless, wearing rubber gloves, a gas mask, and waving road flares in his hand. Sounds like the next Bruce La Bruce film.

5.: Lafayette and Lettie Mae are still holding Tara, but as he says "This has got to be the worst mother**cking intervention in history". Luckily, Sookie and Bill are there to help, and with her telepathy and his glamouring, they're able to free her from Maryann's hold.

4.: Speaking of Sookie, Bill, and Maryann, they had the best scene of the episode, as Bill and Sookie return home to find Gran's house in ruins. Bill puts the bite on Maryann, only to come away poisoned from her black blood. Then she and Sookie have a face-to-face catfight ending with Sookie pushing her hand in Maryann's face. Sookie's hand starts to glow ala Bruce LeRoy in The Last Dragon, and zaps Maryann away. Sho-Nuff!

3.: Another hot Sookie/Eric dream sequence. Unfortunately, it's the last we see of Eric this episode.

2.: Sam in a butcher's apron. Only a butcher's apron.

1.: The meat sacrificial monument. It kept getting bigger and more over-the-top, and the only way it could have been better would've been for Nicolas Cage to be dragged out screaming about "The Bees!".

Okay, so I had a hard time coming up with ten this week. After the high of last week, anything would be a letdown, but there were some questions I had about this episode ...

Why didn't Sam just shapeshift earlier? It would have saved a lot of time and trouble.

It's still sketchy as to why Maryann can control some people but not others.

Is Bill incapable of using contractions? He's starting to remind me of Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

And most importantly ... what the hell happened to the rest of the episode? forty-five minutes? What's up with that?

What do you think? I gave this an up arrow, but do you think I was still too harsh, or not harsh enough?

    Andy

I think thus far Andy Bellefleur's the only one she hasn't had any influence over, and I'm probably the only one to think this, but there seems to be an emphasis placed on him that so far seems odd.  He wasn't affected at the drum circle, at any of the parties he's made it to, and even now in the bar he's unaffected.

Maybe Sookie's not the only special one in Bon Temps.

Any fans of the books have any answers?

    Andy Bellefleur and the books...

Unfortunately you're not going to find an answer in the books about this one; they've expanded the whole MaryAnne story way past anything mentioned there.

    I thought that this was

I thought that this was *very interesting. <spoilers> We know that Sam & the supes (the werewolves and the other 'shifters) are affected by the maenad unless she pulls out the heavy magic, the vampires seem mostly immune, and that Sookie and Jason are immune because they have a trace of Faerie blood (which also explains Jason's nearly supernatural attractiveness and Sookie's telepathy and appeal to other supernaturals). But in the books, Andy, Portia, and Terry Bellefleur are completely normal. We've seen Terry was affected (but he's just a cousin) and we've not seen Portia (yet). Of course, Ball & team are taking some significant liberties, so it would not surprise me if they are cooking up more with Andy (and or the two Bellefleur siblings) - after all, we need more fantastic b-plots! What was most interesting on the subject happened in this episode when Andy was speaking about Nannie Annie (*snerk*) and her referring to it being hard to be a 'one-eyed man in a world of the blind'. The Stackhouses and the Bellefleurs are among the olderst families in Bon Temp, and the books suggest no shortage of the supernatural through the years. Is any special in some way? If he had a second sight (perhaps a touch like Harry Dresden's wizardsight), it would explain his irratability and his tendency to drink. Thoughts?

    Andy and all...

I just figured they had a higher resistance to the wildness the the others.  One of the things they established was that Maryanne's Maenad energy can take longer with some people depending on their nature.  That's part of why it took so long for Tara to really be affected.  it took Eggs really getting into her system before she was open to it.  Seems like people with stronger wills are harder for her to pull in.  Even with Andy's drinking issues, he's really uptight, and not very emotionally open...  I would be surprised if the gave the Bellefluers special powers.  They have enought to deal with with their relationship to the Compton family.

Andy was dancing in the bar

on the first night, clearly under Maryann's influence. It doesn't make sense that it didn't happen later.   LaFayette and Tara's mother should've been "hypnotized" too when they tried to take Tara.  Seems very random, just like the affects of vampire blood.  Lazy writing.

    Bottom shelf, bottom shelf!

I liked Arlene's "At least shoot the cheap liquor. BOTTOM SHELF, BOTTOM SHELF!". Great campy episode. Sadly it finished way too quick this time.

    Post Credits

I'm still trying to find out if it's true or not, but I've read somewhere that the ep was so short it's because after the credits, there was a 10-minute "Vampire Report" faux news report that is given by a "news program" within the universe of the show.
    Ottawaboy's picture

Yes - there was a fun news spoof

I watched past the credits - and there was a 10 minute faux-news show - story on the Vampire Rights amendment - how the 2 sides have run campaign ads (very Prop 8-esque). was fun to watch. I wonder if its on youtube?!

    I thought Andy didn't get

I thought Andy didn't get hypnotized, at the drum circle and otherwise, because he always arrives late? And I will have to check the tivo, but I thought the same would explain Lafayette and Lettie Mae, they arrive after the hypnosis has been induced.

In any case, inconsistencies notwithstanding, Jason's god speech was worth the price of admission.

I'm a little concerned about the late introduction of a new, never mentioned before character, who allegedly can fix the situation. Deus Ex Machina.

Two episodes left. Has anyone heard anything of a third season?

Um, Sophie Ann is no throwaway character

That vampire queen is fucking genius in the books. And they chose the right actress to represent this gorgeous queen.

But, yeah, True Blood departs greatly from the books, mainly because there's no stopping the maenad in the book until she gets her tribute and then goes somewhere else for more tributes. And her name was Callisto.

That, and True Blood is utterly degayed. Totally asexual Lafayette, the only character who doesn't get explicit sex simulations (while you get to see naked 50 year olds with huge bellies grinding against some naked woman; that's how worse gay sex is considered) or romantic storyline. And don't come to me about relevence to the book, because Hoyt/Jessica didn't exist in the books, much less that virgin sex scene. True Blood takes a lot of creative license,  including license to erase gay relationships (Godric/Eric).

    Sure, Lafayette had gay sex

Sure, Lafayette had gay sex in the books.  But considering that he was also killed for that very sex, I'm happier that it didn't happen in True Blood.  And Godric and Eric's gay relationship wasn't "erased" because it didn't exist in the books.   Eric had sex with his (male) maker, but that maker wasn't Godric.  And Godric may have had gay sex, but it wasn't with Eric-- it was with Farrell, a vampire who doesn't exist in True Blood.

Your complaint that True Blood has been "degayed" doesn't make any sense to me because the books have hardly any gayness in them in the first place.  If it turns out that Sophie-Anne and Hadley are not presented as having any sort of relationship in the show, then I could see a good reason to bitch.

And I do believe that there

And I do believe that there were a couple of same-sex couples (extras) in the group/orgy scenes, but they were not front and center or people we'd seen before. I'm doubting that Ball has any reticence in that department.

i tried to seach for those

i tried to seach for those but the most i could find was 3-way action only, 2 girls and 1 guy, ill look harder when i re watch the episodes

And in the books Godrick was

And in the books Godrick was a pedophile and a serial killer of children.  Kind of appreciated the shift there Mr. Ball...

    I thought it was pretty

I thought it was pretty clear that Eric and Godric had had a sexual relationship during their time together. And there was a decent amount of HoYay between Eric and Lafayette in episode 4.

    3rd season

Yes, there will be a third season.  I know someone who works on the show and they are set to begin filming Season 3 in October.  Not sure when HBO plans to air it, though.

Doesn't erase the fact that they're degayed

Both characters were known to have sex with men. You introduce gay characters into a series, and expect them not to follow protocol from the book?

The series bends its own rules shamelessly, even if we dismiss the book. Sookie gets all sexual over having drunk blood from Eric, but suddenly Eric is not all over a vampire twice his age's blood?

The books had many gay characters. If they can invent a relationship and a character (Jessica), why can't they retain the obvious sexuality of Eric and Godric?

They can make up crap not in the books, but suddenly having the gay characters in the book have some non-canon sex would tear into the fabric of reality?

Sex for the sake of sex?

Who would you have them have sex with?

Everyone - except Jason cause he is a himbo-  who has had sex - not under Maryanne's influence- has done so because they had romantic interest.  Would you want less for gay characters?

We saw Lafayette hooking up a couple of times in the first season when he was more carefree- I can seem him being gun shy about allowing anyone to touch his right now.

I have read the books and until the third book there isn't really a "gay" vampire and he is a very minor character.  Lafayette is infinitely more interesting in the series.  I would rather have no gay sex than gay sex for no reason.

I think you maybe confusing these books with Anita Blake in which nearly every character is bisexual.

However,  I agree that by creating a "love story" with Hoyt and Jessica they could have for two gay characters but I personally find Lafayette'storyline more interesting.

    Not gay enough

This show does seem to be going out of it's way to avoid the gay.

    Read further

One vampire king is gay. A fairy relative of Sookie is gay. Jason's werepanther best friend is gay (before he gets executed). Fairly solid gay visibility.

NOT IN THE FIRST TWO BOOKS!

I have read them all.  I'm not sure if you are purposefully missing the point or if you really feel that strongly. The only two gay characters in the first two books is Lafayette. The characters you are suggesting don't appear until later.  The overall outline seems to be a book a season. Next season if the Vampire Prince isn't gay then you have a point.

I would rather have the gay characters be entrenched in a good story than just having sex.  If I want to see a show that is about random gay sex then I'll watch reruns of Queer as Folk.

We bitch about how we are so much more than who we have sex with but then criticize a show that features a strong gay character who isn't promiscious.

I think people should also keep in mind that this whole season has taken place in the span of about 10 days.

    Maryann's Powers

I think Maryann's powers only word on the physically or emotionally weak (including exhaustion, emotional turmoil and being drunk or high).

...Jesus and I started seeing other people (but)...

This episode was the weakest of the season, it seemed rushed. However, there were enough classic moments to deserve an up arrow. I stopped reading the books because the show was much better and I didn't want to ruin it. I didn't find the books to be real gay. Or the show to have been de-gayed. The show does treat homesexuality more sublimely (or should I say Ball-esk). Plus Lafayette alone is enough for me (at the moment). "Just because me and Jesus started seeing other people, doesn't mean we don't talk." CLASSIC.
