IMHO "True Blood" (2.11): Frenzy

It was another chaotic episode of True Blood last night, but we had some great scenes with the Vampire Queen, who revealed more about Maryann's intentions, and Lafayette and Sookie trying to rescue Tara ... again.

Look below for the top ten reasons why this episode earns an up arrow (and also for the little bone I have to pick with Alan Ball.)

10.: Jason just keeps getting funnier and hotter. He and Andy (who's sounding more and more like Billy Bob Thornton in Sling Blade ... I keep expecting him to break out with "I like them french fried potaters") decide to arm themselves against the marauding townsfolk, which leads to a trip to the Sheriff station for guns & ammo, and Jason trying to resist the advances of a horny girl.

9.: When Andy laments how easy it is for Jason to get women, he responds "You think it's easy? I work out like a mother***er ... and watch a lot of porn to learn stuff".

8.: Jessica and Hoyt are having a rough go of it, and she's not making things better by taking a bite out of her possible future mother-in-law. But c'mon ... Mama had it coming.

7.: Sam finds himself in charge of Arlene's kids, and takes them to Fangtasia to ask Eric for help. Eric is fascinated with the kids, calling them "teacup humans".

6.: Awesome moment of the night: Eric bids the kids adieu, and flies away.

5.: Pam remains criminally underused. Not only is she dressed like an undead Solid Gold dancer (or Ann-Margret in Tommy), but she says that the kids smell, and that Maryann still owes her a pair of shoes.

4.: Lettie Mae lets Tara go, and Tara promptly runs back to Eggs, and despite her best effort, again succumbs to Maryann's magic. In the annals of "bad ideas from the get-go", Sookie and Lafayette decide to try and rescue Tara once again from Maryann's clutches. It ends as well as you expect, with Lafayette working his new black eyes, and Sookie screaming bloody murder.

3.: Bill visits the Vampire Queen, and while her appearance was a bit shaky at first, by the end of the episode, I was hooked. Maybe it was her one-liners, or the fact that she goaded Bill into partaking the Vampire Bite That Dare Not Speak Its Name, but she ended up a total hoot.

2.: Someone has laid an egg. I don't mean it metaphorically. Someone literally laid an egg, and it's being protected by Maryann's familiars. WTF?

1.: The Vampire Queen of Louisiana ... who is thousands of years old ... and lives in a mansion with beautiful prey ... spends her time playing Yahtzee.

What did you think? I'm glad that we finally learned the backstory of Maryann, and why she's obsessed with Sam, and what her ultimate goal is ... she's waiting for her God to arrive.

But I do have a bone to pick with Alan Ball (who wrote this episode). Sookie and Lafayette discuss Eric, and they admit to each other that they have sex dreams about him. So why do we only get Lafayette's description, but whenever Sookie dreams about Eric, we see it all in lush soft-core? The closest we get to a Lafayette/Eric pairing in this episode is when Lafayette hallucinates that Eric is Lettie Mae (which admittedly, was pretty funny).

But seriously, where's the hot Eric/Lafayette dream sequence?

    Yes...it was this episode.

Close to an hour of a whole lotta busy telling a whole lotta nothing. The only positive of this episode for me was that it just takes us a step closer to the end of the Maryann snooze fest.  It took WAAAAAAY to long to get the story of Maryann out.

Also...I wish Bill didn't seem so repulsed by the offer of the Hungarian boy wanting to have sex with him.

PS - NOW you can fly?? Hmmm..this power seems woefully, especially when it would have made sense in earlier episodes.

Abolutely agree!  To have such an amazing episode with Godric extinguishing his existence, the past two episodes have been lack-luster at best.  Sure, there have been some moments or some one-liners that entertain, but the episodes fall flat as a whole.

Last night's episode had the most "gayness" verbally, but that's it.... surprising with a gay director to seemingly exclude it.

Eric carries his scenes and more... adding Pam back into the mix is long overdue.

Jason doesn't like to be cock-blocked..... nice to see him getting primal again.

I'm routing for Pam and the Queen to hook-up.

True Blood - DeGayed - Not So Sure

After the most gay and homosexual episode of True Blood, last night - August 30th, 2009 - and after weeks of folks saying that True Blood has been "de-gayed" - that there seemed to be no discussion of this episode and the upcoming season finale - is all indeed a mystery.  Not only has there sex among women, and as well as feedings among women who desired women just for that purpose, there was feeding of man on man, and offers of sex between the men.  Gee this is a tough crowd.

Or maybe you have terrible standards

Note how the male versions were not graphic at all and utterly for comedic purpose (Sophie Ann's teasing of Bill; she forced him to feed on the boy, as he can't deny her suggestions).

The male on male "feeding" was bland as hell. After rebuffing sexual advances, they kept the boy relatively clothed and had Bill very non-sexually bite him.

The lesbian catering to the straight audience had females moaning and the queen feasting rather closely to genitals, stopping at a very sensual upper thighs points.

Some people simply will never be satisfied.

We get an out and proud gay character whose a good deal more confident and strong than most of the main cast and people complain that he isn't having enough sex on screen for us. Tell me, why would Lafayette, who is little more than a supporting character, even get a sex scene anyway? And at what point could they have fit that in to the story that wouldn't have it seem random and out of place?

And as for Bill's lack of desire to feed from a male, that just seems like a nitpick to me. Bill is straight from what I gather, thus the idea of sleeping with a man does nothing for him if not out right repulses him(as the idea of sleeping with a woman repulses some gay men I know). Why is this percieved as a slight against us that a straight man would not be interested in sex with another man and might even find the idea of it unpleasent? People simply will never be satisfied. It's a wonder people bother at all trying to be gay inclusive given how quickly we seem to turn against them at even the slightest perceived insult against us.

    BULLSHIT

    And the stench is huge.

Jessica doesn't even exist in the books, Hoyt is even less of a supporting character, and they got a plenty enough graphic sex scene that had no relevance nor necessity to the show's storyline.

Maybe you're happy with 80's innuendo and asexual characters, but some of us got tired from those dated approaches.

    Well excuse me

Asexual? I don't think you even know what that word means if you think it applies here, since Lafayette is far from asexual. He makes porn, was sleeping with a politician, and was likely exchaning sexual favors for V, so the idea that he is asexual is ridiculous to say the least. But of course, since we don't have a scene of Lafayette taking it or giving it, clearly that must mean he's a nun or completely devoid of a sex drive, right?I can only hope you were using asexual in general and not using it to refer to Lafayette, otherwise it was a complete misuse of the word. And again, at what point in this season would it have made any sense to give Lafayette a sex scene? Would it be while he was trapped in Eric's basement or while he was quivering in the corner from his PTSD? I think it's interesting that we get a gay character developing in ways beyond him being constantly defined by who he has sex with and the first criticism we hear is that he isn't screwing on screen enough. I mean, do you honestly think that will add to his character, or do you simply want it done for the sake of it being revolutionary in some way? Because the sex scenes in this show almost always detract from or stall the story in my opinion, and they've never done anything for me personally except get in the way, so I don't get why anyone would actually want a supporting character's limited screen time to be eaten up by showing him having sex when it could be spent having him actually either become more fleshed out or contribute to the story.

    ...

Visually asexual, yes. Obscure background references to sex when even extras in the shows are being shown having graphic sex is transparent.

Did you read my post? When did Hoyt/Jessica make sense, fit into the storyline? There was no such storyline in the book!

There were plenty of episodes before he was trapped in a basement in the beginning of season 2. You call him new, I call him yet another mother hen gay, always playing second fiddle to the women. Witty sexual quibbling with women, so long as its only the women who get to display sexytime and not the gay one.

Did you also watch the latest episode? Queen Sophie Ann doing a lesbian scene (even though in the books she is not met until book 5)? Perfect. Male equivalents in vampire characters? None, even though Eric is pretty much bisexual.

I'm sorry if you interpret gay to be anything else other than a sexual orientation, Mr. Puritan. Clearly, sex always comes at the exclusion of character development!

....Oh, wait, no it doesn't. Sookie and Jason have been evolving just fine.

    Well it's Not the book!

How many times have we gone over this DUH! If you want a story that fits the books write your own. I am so sick of people who get off on books then get pissed that the move/tv show doesn't eactly fit the books. Example - Brokeback Mountain - did you have a hissy fit because the characters were totally different?
    Knightgee's picture

    Interpret?

You mean I don't define gay characters exclusively by their sexuality, therefore I must be some kind of crazy puritanical loon, right? Please. Sorry if I'm more interested in developing characters than watching them get laid all the time. I also think it's interesting that you mention Jason and Sookie as "examples" of how the two can coexist, since Sookie hasn't had an actual sex scene for quite some time because the story and her character have been more important and Jason's development this season, which has been huge compared to last season also happened to coincide with him suddenly having a lot less sex than he was last season. Coincidence? I certainly don't think so. And yeah, Hoyt/Jessica had sex, because guess what? That sex actually furthered their individual characters as well as the relationship, both in showing them losing their virginity as well as revealing another obstacle in their relationship. Their sex scenes were also short and got the point across, they weren't the long, lingering sex scenes with other characters that have become so tedious and purposeless. So there's honestly no comparison. They didn't get a sex scene just because, they got one because it worked for where their characters were going. How would you do this for Lafayette at any point in this season, how would you make his sex scene actually mean anything? Or are you more interested in seeing him screw someone than have it actually make sense in the story?

Visually asexual? That's bull. By that logic every character you see is asexual till you see them getting it on with someone. Visually, he expresses sexual desire, refers to sex he's previously had, has been shown pre-coitus with individuals, etc. A graphic sex scene would be nice, but honestly, it seems like these claims of "de-gaying" are just people asking for what we've already had more than enough of: a gay character being defined by who they sleep with. In Lafayette this season we get a character whose having to rally his broken family and friends together to stop a supernatural threat, all of this done despite his personal problems, which include PTSD. He's the character we always say we want, instead of just another gay whose the shy one coming out or the evil gay or the bitchy queen chatting with the girls and being comic relief or the promiscuous one. But of course what happens when we get a strong, assertive, black gay male being a source of support and strength both physically and mentally and not just another queen there to make jokes and laugh with the girls? People complain he isn't screwing enough on camera and say he's been de-gayed, as if to say all there is to any gay character is who he can be seen having sex with. As I said before, some people will never be satisfied.

    Eric/Lafayette!

Thank you, Snicks! I was thinking the same thing. Lafayette describes his dreams about Eric as "nasty and fantastic." Where, oh where, was that sequence? Team Sookie/Eric got to live out its fantasies prematurely, so why not the Eric/Lafayette shippers. It fits the narrative, for crying out loud!

Since it looks like the overly-hyped "lesbian" vampire queen will only be having sex with Eric, I'm desperate for Mr. Ball to throw us some kind of gay bone. Pretty, pretty please.

Overall, the season's penultimate episode was a bit meandering. But it did its job setting the table for the finale. Now I just have to figure out how to kill two weeks.

If gays are treated unequally, it's with the tacit compliance of

The directing queer. He has the option to have more egalitarian depictions. But he chooses the heteronormative, staying in good graces with his straight overlords route.

You know, we can show morbidly obese men naked going around and fucking in orgies, but two good-looking dudes would set straight eyes ablaze with repulsion.

Notice how they went very conservative and kept the boy with the robe on, and the place for blood-sucking was the conservative neck. No legs like the previous lesbian scene, which they had no problem of blatantly showing with female moans full force.

I like the show's aesthetics, but the disparate treatment, especially when the gay director is utterly complicit in this unequal treatment, irritates me to no end.

    But fur covered handcuffs?

But fur covered handcuffs? That must have been the most heterosexual thing to come out of Lafayette's jeans, ever. No, it's not the fact that he carries handcuffs. I can appreciate a man who is always prepared. But fur covered?

The props department must be straight.

I did love the Queen's reaction to the whole Eric/Bill relationship. If I wasn't so repulsed by Bill I would love to see it.  I'll take some Eric/Lafayette though. When are we gonna see that?

    Egg

Alan Ball has something a bit feathery about his obsession with Eggs. (Both one that was laid, the character and the one this episode laid.)

Down arrow.... WWWWWWWAAAAAYYYY down. The vamp Queen did nothing for me, was very disappointed in the obsession with her wanting to see  Bill have sex with a guy. Didn't find it humorous, nor even titalating. It added nothing to the story but wasted our time watching it. The only comment I did find funny was the Eric/Bill why don't you boys just fuck line. That was funny.

The rest of the episode was boring (Ok I did laugh when Jason hit the tree while trying to be Rambo).

I'm hoping that the finale is worth this lousy set up.

    Eric and Lafayette

I agree that it would have been nice to see some of the fantasies that Lafayette has about Eric depicted on screen. It does strike me as a bit of a double standard when we see Sookie and Eric having graphic sex. I've even noticed that during the many (too many) wild orgies you never see any man on man action. I give this episode a down arrow. I don't like the actress playing the queen. The actress playing Pam would have been much better in that role. Finally, I am sick of the Maryann storyline, but the woman who plays Hoyt's mother is a real hoot. I suspect that Alan Ball will write the season finale and I hope he does a better job than he did this week.

The actress playing Pam is too old to play Sophie Anne...

...as Sophie Anne was around 16 years old when she was made vamp.

Definitely a comedown after several terrific weeks

The whole episode felt dragged out and padded, with characters doing stupid things (letting Tara go so she could go break more stuff, Sookie spooning on the kitchen floor, Bill spending the night at the Queen's lair, Sam taking the kids to the vampire bar, etc.) that made little sense.  I liked Hoyt and Jessica, and Evan Rachel Wood had a nice comedic spin on her lines, though I don't think they let her be as languid and sensual in the role as she could've been.  (Maybe they felt that Maryanne had cornered the market on that approach.)  Still, at least she seemed to be enjoying herself, which was more than the other characters (and the TV audience).  I really hope the season wrap-up rights itself again and doesn't potentially jump the shark.

    Sweet Jesus

For weeks, I have been visting the forums off and on to see what others have to say about the show. I, personally, am a fan of the show. The Jessica and Hoyt storyline is kind of sweet and the scene with Godric was extremely sad and stunning.  My major complaint with the show is that Sookie seems alittle bi-polar when it cames to how she deals with situations. It's like one minute she wants to be Wonder Woman and the next she's screaming for Bill to save her from the very situation she's put herself in. It's annoying.

As for the precieved "degaying" of the show, I agree with an earlier post. The fact that we don't have Lafayette screwing in every scene is a bit of a refreshment. Let's face it, he wasn't meant to last this long and the fact that Alan Ball values the character enough to make room for him in the show as an ongoing supporting character is a big up arrow in my book. Clearly he's gay and clearly he enjoys the "nasty and fantastic" dreams he has of Eric but the reason those vision weren't shown was because it does nothing to move the story along. We all know that Eric has a hard-on for Sookie, so the visions makes sense in that it shows Sookie reacting to the fact that his blood is now coursing through her veins and she is attracted to him on some level which disgusts the holy bayou out of her.

As far as the orgy scenes, have you noticed that they aren't something the show dwells on? I mean it's used as a backdrop and prop to show Maryann's influence. AND as far was we know, Lafayette is the only homosexual in Bon Temps and since he wasn't influence until recently, there would be no reason to see man on man sex. The whole point was for the town to give in to it's deepest and darkest desires, soiling itself in choas. Again, the orgies do nothing to further the storyline and they aren't that important in and of themselves.

Oh and the Godric/Eric slash that was being pushed was never going to happen in the show. Godric wasn't Eric's maker in the books and the affection that Eric has for Godric in the show was clearly that of a child. He regarded Godric as his "Father" and they were "Brothers" in the sense that they were both vampires of the same blood and Godric treated Eric more as his "Son" than lover. Simple as that. No more no less.
