IMHO "Ugly Betty" (3.23/3.24): Season Three Finale

Last week was the two-hour season finale of ABC's Ugly Betty, and it ended with a death, a startling revelation, a cliffhanger, and Betty about to start the next chapter in her life.

There was a LOT going on during this two-parter, so I'll concentrate on the highlights...

Betty and Marc interview for editor jobs with all the big NYC magazines. Betty manages to pique the interest of the woman from The New York Review by telling some B.S. story about how she had a subscription when she was a kid, and it changed her life, etc. (I'll have to remember that if I'm ever interviewing with Honcho.)

Jodi (Bernadette Peters) informs her that the magazine loved her and wants to offer her a job, but when she calls to confirm finds out that Jodi has stolen the job out from under her. Backstabbing in the publishing world? Who would have thought?

Unfortunately, Betty has other problems, namely the return of first love Henry (and Christopher Gorham is looking alarmingly gaunt ... was he trapped on Harper's Island too long?).

It's bad timing that boyfriend Matt has just asked her to move in together, because the return of Henry leaves her momentarily flummoxed. After the obligatory scenes of Betty trying to compare the two (and I'm almost positive they did the exact same thing when she was trying to choose between Henry and Gio), she decides not to push her luck, and vows not to see Henry again.

But first ... she sees him again. To tell him goodbye ... with a kiss. Which Matt just happens to witness (NYC being so tiny and all). This sets up an inexplicable and, frankly, unbelievable character change for Matt from supportive boyfriend to bitter ex.

It's not all bad news for Betty, though, thanks to the death of Mode editor Penny (Rachel Dratch) (and remind me never to shoo pigeons away from an open window on the 26th floor).

With Penny gone it means her position is open, and both Betty and Marc are promised the job by Daniel and Wilhelmina, respectively. After an aborted attempt at making the position into a contest between the two, Willi and Daniel decide the only fair way ... is to flip a coin.

Speaking of Daniel, he and Molly are nearing the end of her life (you can tell because she's suffering from Love Story disease, in which the patient becomes more beautiful the closer she is to dying).

Somehow, Daniel has become a media star thanks to his relationship, and he ends up on The View, with Joy Behar (playing herself, badly) and a pregnant Elisabeth Hasselbeck (and I don't know about you, but I was on the edge of my seat expecting some kind of Alien-esque stomach-burster scene here).

Molly spends her remaining days trying to get Daniel a hook-up for after she's gone. I've given it some thought, and I think that plot would make a perfect summer romcom. Maybe Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson in Who Will Lay My Husband? or How to Lose a Grieving Rich Guy in Ten Days. (Of course, being a romcom, she would end up being cured at the last moment thanks to a special um, "healing herb" that Mathew acquires.)

Molly is running a fever, so Daniel attends the big fashion publication awards by himself. Unfortunately Marc steals his speech (t/y to starri for the reminder) and when he wins and has to say something, he's at a loss for words ... until he sees Molly (looking radiant in a beautiful gown) standing in the back of the room, which gives him the strength to speak. When he rushes off stage afterwards, he realizes that Molly isn't there ... and then realizes that she was never actually there.

Yep, in her final moments, Molly astral-projected herself into the ballroom to give Daniel a boost of confidence, which he wouldn't have needed if he had held on to his speech. He rushes home in time to see Molly's body being carried out of the apartment.

Willi is tired of Claire barking orders, and vows to dig up some dirt on her. Luckily, she finds out that Claire and Victoria Hartley (Christine Baranski) have some kind of bad blood between them, and uses every trick in her book (including some vague flirting) to get to the truth. It turns out that Claire and Hal had an affair eons ago, and when Claire became pregnant, she left town for an abortion (and kept it secret from Hal).

Willi confronts Claire with this knowledge, and blackmails her into stepping down from Meade publishing.

Justin receives the devastating news that his application for a performing arts high school has been rejected. He's heartbroken, as this means he'll have to endure public high school next season.

The episode's stories come together at the awards show, where we get Marc giving Justin some advice about being gay at public school, we get Molly's "vanishing hitchhiker" trick, and we learn that the coin that Willi and Daniel flipped came up "heads", which means Betty wins the promotion.

Betty leaves the party to visit her new office, which she obtained by remaining true to herself and without comprising her principles (I half-expected to hear Carly Simon's Let The River Run start blaring in the background). Instead, Matt comes by to talk to her ... oh wait, it's not Matt anymore, it's Evil Matt. Matt starts babbling about being betrayed, and how Betty was his first true love, and how even though he's dumping her, they'll still see each other ... because he's her new boss at Mode. Um ... what?

Finally, Claire informs Willi that she will not be stepping down from Meade. She told Hal about the abortion, and he accepted it, and the two of them have decided to "re-evaluate" Willi's role in the company.

The episode ends with Claire burning a Certificate of Adoption (which means she didn't get an abortion, but actually had the child and gave it away), and Willi at home making arrangements with a bounty hunter. She wants her money back from Connor, and hires the guy to find him.

After the bounty hunter leaves she strolls through the apartment, and when rounds the corner, gasps and drops her glass of booze. She looks aghast and cries out, "what are you doing here?!"

End of episode and end of season

Well, there's a lot to ponder until the new season starts this fall.

Will Betty and Matt patch things up? — Probably not. I don't see Betty ending up with Matt.

Will Betty ever get her braces off? — Yes, definitely (it's already been promised).

Will Justin have problems fitting in at high school? — Certainly, and hopefully we'll see it.

Will Claire's long-lost son be brought up again? — Obviously.

Will Marc be bitter about Betty's promotion? — Um, yes.

Will Hilda and councilman Archie stay together? — I see some kind of political scandal in the future.

Finally, who was the person that Willi saw at the end? There are three likely choices: Connor (which I think is way too obvious), Alexis (which is doubtful, since Rebecca Romijn is the star of the new fall show Eastwick), and my pick, the allegedly dead Fey Sommers. It would mean lots of intrigue and drama for the new season.

What did you think of the season finale? Frankly, I could have done without the return of Henry. His appearance was pointless except to create an artificial conflict between Betty and Matt. And I just didn't buy Matt's transformation into Evil Matt.

What did you think of the season as a whole? Will you be following Betty as she makes the move to — gulp — Friday nights this fall?

    Daniel didn't forget his speech.

    Marc stole his notecards.

I don't know, I enjoyed it at the time, but it was kind of a weak resolution, and Matt's about-face really came out of nowhere.

    snicks's picture

Thanks - you're right about the speech.

That's how much i cared about the Daniel/Molly story.

    Fey? I dunno

Wouldn't seeing Fey cause Willi to scream like no one has ever screamed before? "What are you doing here?" is too coherent for that.

Justin will triumph in high school by staging a spectacular revival of Anyone Can Whistle. Sondheim will guest star, telling Justin "You've finally licked the book!"

    Not if...

..Willie knew she was alive the whole time.

this scene made me pause and ask "how many sharks can one show jump?!?!"

    Thank you for this:

I thought the same exact thing.  Central Park is HUGE, and Betty would have no business being where she was without going to meet Henry, so how is it possible Matt just happened to be there?  This took me out of the moment, whatever moment it was they were supposed to be going for.

The scene with Marc and Justin was great, really glad they gave them another scene together, as it's been too long since the last one!  Very touching.

I'm glad that the Molly storyline is OVER.

I'm guessing it has to be Faye at the end.

Any chance that Claire's adopted out baby is someone we already know??

    The long-lost baby

Shouldn't it be Amanda? I can't remember, did she end up being Gene Simmons's daugher or not? Not, right? So she could be the demon-spawn. And that would keep her integral to storylines.

The blog is integral to storylines.

    Adoption Certificate

The adoption certificate that Claire burned clearly stated she'd given up a baby boy.  So, unless there's something they haven't told us about Amanda, it's doubtful, especially since they've been fairly consistant in saying that she's Fey's daughter.

    DVR crash

Our box crashed and wiped the finale before we could watch it. :( But my guess for the adopted kid based on the above would be Matt. Or is that not possible?

    I thought about Matt

I don't know that it's possible, being that Victoria is his mom.  But, I guess it could be since Victoria knew of the affair and of Claire leaving town for the "abortion", maybe she followed her, adopted the baby, and presented to Hal as her own?  Stranger things have happend on the show...

Also, I think you can watch full eps on ABC.com?

Betty, I need you -- Daniel

Was it not totally obvious that the last scene with Daniel texting Betty and their hug on his stoop is setting up the romance we've been waiting for since the beginning of the series?

Next year is going to be all about Daniel and Betty falling in love.  If it's going to be the final season, what better way for it to end than with a Betty and Daniel wedding?

Also, I absolutely loved the scene with Mark and Justin.  Which former gay kid here wouldn't have loved hearing that advice from a successful young gay man when you were about to start life at a scary public school?

    Bountiful's picture

    no!

I would find a Betty/Daniel romance very difficult to watch. Betty and Daniel are so close. They're like brother and sister, to me. I couldn't imagine them together. Besides, in order to be with Daniel, by TV logic, Betty would have to undergo a makeover to be pretty enough for Daniel, which would make her lose part of her individuality. I mean I understand that there's a lot more to Betty than garish colours and ridiculous bows. But I don't ever want her to lose the ridiculous bows.

Besides, I don't know that a smart, motivated, intelligent, kind of geeky girl like Betty would ever fall for a playboy, not even a reformed playboy. (Well, there was Matt, who used to be a sex addict, but that relationship never felt entirely believable to me.)

I do think that there is a beautiful love between them, and I believe it is a meaningful, lifelong love. Their relationship is so sweet. I just don't see it as romantic.

    Bountiful's picture

I thought this ep was brilliant

With the exception of the Matt/Betty romance, which I've found boring, this was great. There was great tension, and dramatic change among all the characters - Betty, Mark, Daniel, Molly, Willi, Claire, even often ignored Justin. Only Hilda and Ignacio did not have a main plot line, but as they've both had good stories over the season, I think it's okay. I am one of those odd people who finds workplace drama interesting when it is actually about work, so I enjoyed the emotional and ethical challenges that the different characters faced. It was a great, dynamic show, for the most part.

The only part that sagged for me was the conflict between Matt and Betty. I just haven't felt the chemistry between the two of them in quite a while, and I found I didn't care if they stayed together or not. Hopefully next season Betty will find somebody intelligent and motivated as Henry, and as emotionally available as Matt.

    Renee Slater?

Her popping up out of the crazy house would be something of a shock for Wili. And also provide something of a plot line for Daniel.

The show so easily telegraphed that Molly was gonna die. Torn between if that was bad writing or campy writing. This is a tele-novela.

I thought the season was good overall and hopefully ABC will do a mid-season correction in the timeslot department when some of it's freshmen shows get the boot.

I was pleased with the finale overall, with a few minor reservations (like the emergence of "evil Matt").  I thought the entire third season was very enjoyable, in fact; better than the second season.

I'm looking forward to new episodes in the autumn, but am fully prepared for the fourth season to be the last, because I think ABC is going to totally kill this show by moving it to Friday nights.

I'm like a superhero, with no powers or motivation...

    How Lame Am I...

...for failing to realize until about the second or third appearance of Jodi that BOTH witches from Into the Woods were appearing on this show? (Bernadette was the original, Vanessa was in the revival.)

That's the kinda thing that could lose me my membership card, isn't it?

And I really hope Betty and Daniel DON'T become a romantic couple. I actually prefer them as friends.

Add me to the fans who liked the scene between Marc and Justin.
