IMHO "United States of Tara" (1.09): Possibility
Gay teen Marshall has been crushing on his hunky schoolmate Jason on Showtime's United States of Tara, but when afternoon cocktails and bonding over mother issues leads to a kiss, how will Jason respond? Marshall (Keir Gilchrist) has been growing closer to Jason (whom I suddenly realized is played by Andrew Lawrence, of the Lawrence family acting dynasty. Whoah!), and begins a hilariously misguided effort to buff up. (The blue headband is a nice touch. That totally sells the look.)
Cool aunt Charmaigne (the fabulous Rosemarie DeWitt) has the best line of the episode when she sees Marshall coming home from his "run" and asks, "what are you dressed as?" Later Marshall and Jason watch a DVD in the bedroom, and after talking about how screwed up their moms are, the rum and brandy smoothies work their magic, and Jason falls asleep.
Marshall removes the glass from Jason's hand, and after much trepidation leans over and kisses Jason on the lips. Shocked, Jason opens his eyes, and after some hesitation sits up and quickly kisses Marshall back. We then abruptly cut away to a different scene, and when we come back to the story, Jason is leaving the house. Um ... so what happened after the kiss? Nothing? Something? They don't tell us, and instead we get a scene where Jason says an awkward goodbye to Marshall's dad as he's leaving.
Marshall is enjoying some post-snogging tea when his dad comes in, and when he sees how happily Marshall is dunking his teabag his dad says, "you've got it bad, don't you?" Marshall replies, "that's a distinct possibility." I love that Marshall's parents treat his sexuality so matter-of-factly. That breath of fresh air, plus the sensitive way that the "first kiss" scene was handled, earns this episode an up arrow. They could have had Jason freak out, or even attack Marshall (and Jason's hands do clench when he realizes what's happening), but having Jason respond the way he did brings up a lot of interesting future possibilities for this story. Loved the episode............
I knew it would show up on
I knew it would show up on a blog post if I just waited a few minutes! Man, this for me was the highlight of my sunday night TV watching. The entire scene had me on the edge of my seat (and I had a pretty severe flashback to my high school days) and I was so glad when Jason kissed him back. Even if the relationship toilet-bowls after this, seeing Marshall's sweet interaction with his father and Keir Gilchrist's super-cute portrayal of first love blushes warmed my heart.
And I really like the show overall. I love the development of new alters, which I'm glad they didn't wait long to spring on us, the slow unravelling of what happened to Tara, and next week's episode with the therapist break up looks hilarious!
Wait until Next week...
It's outrageous. That's all I'll say. Although, I applaud Marshall's actions in the final moments of the final act. (you go girl!) (just kidding. I had to say it.)
But if anyone has Comcast On-Demand and subscribe to ShoTime then you can watch next week's episode right now.
LOVE IT!!!!
U.S. of Tara is one of the best shows on TV today. It's well-written, well acted and the matter of fact way they treat Marshall is refreshing (no awkward coming out epsidode, no self-hating...).
I thought this epsisode was just plain awesome...I was disappointed they didn't flesh out the scene more, but that's the show - they have a lot to fit into 30min. :-)
Wait until you see the next episode (New epsidoes on Showtime On Demand one week early). It's gripping...I can't wait to see where they go next.
P
Hell yeah
Just watched "next week's episode" and all I can say is they sure know how to avoid the predictable. Didn't see that coming! No more lest I get into spoiler territory dammit all.
And as a purely gratuitous aside - you're a real cutie Snicks.
THIS IS THE MOMENT!!!
Watching Next Weeks episode on Demand I was immediately rushed with memories of Sydney, And Allison, and Brooke from Melrose Place territory.
Without giving spoilers, I was gleefully floored!!!
Too bad MP never had a gay storyline this thrilling!!! Go US of Tara! and Showtime!!!
Great show.
peace,
Just
That's exactly the expression...
gleefully floored!!!
I've been waiting
Ever since I found out I could watch early with OnDemand (thanks, Duckie), I've been waiting for the recap of this episode so I could just go "Squeeee!" - I loved how they handled it. I actually had to rewind and rewatch what happened after Jason's eyes popped open, because I was afraid to look when it happened. I then rewatched it two or three more times because it was so cute.
His parents treat him so naturally. There's probably something to be said for the fact that if you're dealing with a mom who has DID, gay is probably a minor issue. But it's still cool to see, and that moment in the kitchen between Marshall and his dad would have warmed the cockles of my heart if I had one.
I had no idea that was a Lawrence - I didn't know they still let them on things. He also doesn't have that Lawrence build, he's a little stouter.
As for Jason and Marshall's dad, well, if you were a minister's son (a minister that runs a Hell House with writhing, dying AIDS victims, as well as you and the boy you just made out with cage dancing with each other in bride and groom drag), with a mother we just learned that isn't intersted in her son's life, and you had just made out with a boy after drinking alone in his house, and while making your getaway, you encounter a parental unit, well, you might look and talk a lot like Jason. I thought it was perfectly done.
And now I'm gonna pull up OnDemand and watch next week's episode, because I was always the kid that shook my Christmas presents.
Lawrence eyes
"I actually had to rewind and rewatch what happened after Jason's eyes popped open, because I was afraid to look when it happened. I then rewatched it two or three more times because it was so cute."
Yes, it wasn't about Marshall there for me - the end of that scene was all about Jason's eye acting. It conveyed some of the best emotional transitions I've watched in any recent show. I felt like I knew each emotion he went through. Brilliant!
Aaaaah! You guys are so
Ha! That comment just made
Letter to Diablo Cody
I sent her a note last night after watching the episode. She is so in touch with contemporary teenagers than you can ever imagine. There is nothing predictable about this show. I think w may see a lot more of Jason's sexual discovery.
I hate spoilers or pre-watching shows so I won't look ahead and criticism has little value for me either. The only fun in that is to read bad reviews of great films a Dallas review of GONE WITH THE WIND in 1939 thought it too dismissive of Southern culture and completely unrealistic of the way it actually was.
That's all I am saying...
INSIDEGUY
awesome
Definitely the best episode so far.
I was positively surprised when Jason kissed Marshall back, because I didn't expect this to happen. And the scene with Marshall and his dad was super cute and gorgeous. I wish all dads could be like marshall's. I didn't really like John Corbet before I saw him in Tara. Also loved the ending when they're all shown in bed sleeping. kate and tara's roadtrip was also fun. Charmaine was pretty funny as always, she's really groing on me and her scenes with marshall are great.
USoT is definitely one of the most interesting shows at the moment. and it keeps getting better
Same scene done many times before
I just posted some screencaps
in the other AfterElton thread regarding how well USOT is handling the character of Marshall and his issues. I'll be amazed if we ever see Ugly Betty's Justin Suarez get as far as Marshall did last night. And the sweet, supportive scene between Marshall and his dad afterwards was just icing on the cake.
I'm also surprised and grateful that we haven't heard a peep about any of this from the AFA or their ilk. I guess they're too busy wrestling for control of the GOP to worry about one gay teenage character's love life, thank goodness!
Episode 10 is a HUGE let down
It made me so upset that I have now stopped watching the show.
Yes, it was about Marshall...;(
Harvey Milk: You gotta give 'em hope.
Episode 10 was cool
Episode 11 is a HUGE let down though. Poor Marshall. I hope the aunt is wrong but she probably isn't and maybe she shouldn't be because that's probably more realistic but it sucks for Marshall.
Great development
