IMHO "United States of Tara" (1.11): Snow
The family is trying to deal with the aftermath of gay teen Marshall's little shed-burning incident. What's going to happen to his burgeoning relationship with classmate Jason, and what should the family do about the Jason-snogging Tara? As Marshall says, "In the words of Police Chief Martin Brody, we need a bigger boat." Marshall is showing no remorse for burning down his mother's shed, and in fact seems to be following in his mother's footsteps by acquiring his own alter ... Neely O'Hara!
Yes, Marshall's been popping Xanax like Pez and it hasn't gone unnoticed, especially with his sister Kate, who offers him sage advice about creeping into Anna Nicole Smith territory. She also reveals new depths to her character when she explains what really happened between Tara's alter "T" and Jason:
"Do you even get what mom's alter's do? They do stuff for mom. She was protecting you. Jason is nothing but a bi-curious church monkey who's using you to find some edge!" "Maybe he will f*ck some guys, and maybe you can get him to f*ck you, but he's going to marry a girl, and he's never going to love you the way you love him, so "T" came out to try and put a stop to it."
Harsh words, but like all great older sisters, Kate has a way of cutting through the bull to help their weenie little brothers.
Marshall sees Jason at school and explains that his mother has been sent to a "hospital for the criminally insane," which for some reason made me laugh out loud (Keir Gilchrist has turned out to be quite adept at deadpan), and Jason apologizes for what happened before telling him - I think - that's it's over between them. He says he talked to his father about it, and tells Marshall, "I think you're the most awesome kid in the school. Remember me when you win your Oscar, okay?" and then walks away. The whole scene was very abrupt, and I can't fathom that it's the last time we'll see the character of Jason (at least I hope not). I'm giving this episode an up arrow because Marshall continues to be the most complicated young gay character on TV, and because his family life (which Marshall says "is starting to resemble early John Waters") is so compelling, even with the alter gimmick. With only one episode left in the first season, it'll be interesting to see if Marshall and his mom can repair their relationship, or if he'll end up in a sleazy alley behind a theater, clad in a mink coat and screaming at the heavens, "GOD! ... Now that I think about it ... that would be so cool! Submitted by on Mon, 2009-03-30 13:05. |

I love it
Iloved how they handled it - to this point. Tara takes agressive action to stop the damage to the family, big sister drops some logic on Marshall, which is sadly true, I'd guess, and Jason manages to handle the situation in a way that, while not AE preffered outcome, is realistic and not too cruel. I'm hoping the show does something more with the relationship, but it's logical that it's backburnered until next season. Marshall has taken a story that could be shocking and superficial, and given it an amazing amoutn of depth. Bravo to Keir.
My only complaint is that as I prepare to move tomorrow, episode 12 hasn't popped up on my OnDemand so I can catch it before I go somewhere without OnDemand and Showtime.
oh, just be honest Ed ...
You could see it that way...
I thought the way the show
I thought the way the show is portraying Marshall and Jason is unique and refreshing. Firstly, I did not expect Jason to kiss Marshall. Then, I expected him to panic afterwards and he didn't. True, he did betray Marshall by kissing "T", but even that was unique, as he was vague when she asked him if he liked boys or girls, instead of just defending his heterosexuality.
I honestly don't believe that what Kate says is true. I think Jason is confused, but I don't think he is using Marshall, and I think it's possible that the two could form a real relationship. His last line only solidifies this for me. I think Jason really likes Marshall, and he breaks it off not because he isn't ready, or because he's confused, but because he really feels bad for what he did and doesn't want to hurt him. It's also interesting that he talked to his Dad about it, that's a conversation I would love to hear.
I doubt much will happen between Marshall and Jason in the finale, but I have high hopes for season 2! And can I just point out that Andrew Lawrence is super adorable in everything he does? (although Keir is doing a fantastic job as well).

Andrew Lawrence
Yes, I remember seeing him
Yes, I remember seeing him in number of Family Channel style movies and shows (that's our equivalent of the Disney Channel), including one where he played a blind high school wrestler (Going to the Mat, which also starred Wayne Brady). And he was the voice of TJ on Recess!
But you are right, he has definitley grown up into a very attractive young man, and I know what you mean about fantasies ;)
There is just something so charming yet sexy about him. Like, he's got a subtle humour to him that just makes me want to smile. He reminds me a lot of younger version of Tony Danza's Tony on Who's the Boss.

The Season Finale...
Is kind of disappointing. It airs next week.
Nothing is really resolved. It just sets things up for Season 2. If there is a Season 2.
Yes there is
Season Finale
GAVE UP
Just finished watching the finale
I love it!
The major twist, never saw that coming in a million years!!I just kept going back to watch that part again & again - The writing and acting is just so brilliant.
It`s a bit early in the game, but I`m very positive that Toni Collette(how amazing she is!) basically pre-order her first emmy and golden globe which she truly deserves, and the show might have a pretty good shot at best comedy series.
Can`t wait for the next season! So far this is my favourite new show this year and I doubt anything recently can top it.
