Kevin Williamson helps "The Vampire Diaries" see (twi)light of day

Well, it was only a matter of time before one of the networks tried to rip-off emulate the success of the toothless tween twaddle Twilight, and leave it to The CW to strike first.

They've ordered a one-hour pilot based on the young-adult series of books The Vampire Diaries by L. J. Smith. The stories (which started in 1991) revolve around a "beautiful and popular high school student who is drawn to the gorgeous and mysterious new guy in town ... who harbors a secret!" Yes, but does he have fabulously unwashed hair?

Helping The CW bring this kids table version of True Blood to life is Julie Plec, supervising writer/producer of the now canceled Kyle XY (and who took a lot of heat for daring to air a gay-positive episode), and from out of nowhere ... Kevin Williamson!

Way back last March we asked, "Where are you, Kevin Williamson?", and at least we now know that out writer/director Kevin (one of the most influential figures in pop culture in the 90's) didn't fall off the face of the earth.

Williamson (who gave the world both Scream and Dawson's Creek) has been tapped to write and exec. produce the new series, and it'll be interesting to see if he can make lightning strike again after all this time. But seeing this certainly doesn't give us reason to be hopeful.

If this pilot gets picked up, would you look forward to it, and does having Kevin at the helm change your mind ... either way?

    Might Look

I'd probably give it a look, but if it's too teen-soap opera I most likely wouldn't keep up with it.

I hope this show epically fails.

Warner Bros had the opportunity to renew "Angel" by Joss Whedon for a Sixth season but refused to do so. And just for that I hope this show crashes and burns.

It almost certainly is going to be BAD.

Besides we don't want a crappy show like this to take away from True Blood by over-saturating the market with vampire properties.

    Not a Chance!!!!

My sister has read this series and just reading the back covers gives me a headache.  I can't imagine the CW making it better, but I can imagine them making it much much worse!  A teen-soap is a teen-soap even with fangs!

However, I'd bet my life savings this will go on my older sister's must watch list right next to Gossip Girl and Privledged!

There hasn't been a decent vampire show since Joss Whedon's Buffy and Angel.

    Let the vampire genre R.I.P.

Oh boy, more emo vampires - does the world really need another chance to wallow in undead angst? I hope this one gets staked before it hits the air.

I did like Scream, but haven't enjoyed much of Williamson's work since then. Maybe he needs to try tackling something other than teen and/or horror projects to find some new relevance.

So - a teen version of True Blood?

Who will they get to play Ryan's character? Maybe they should let ABC Family which seems to get less vapid than the "Privileged" juggernaut. (I never saw why any gays would watch it). Personally I think they should do a teen version of Dexter!
