The French gay cops of "Les Bleus", now translated for our viewing pleasure
Last month, we blogged about the French police show Les Bleus, and the burgeoning relationship between two of its characters: the rookie cop Kévin, played by Nicolas Gob , and the older cop Yann, played by Mathieu Delarive. Unfortunately, because the show was in French, much of the nuances of the relationship were lost in lack of translation (and Babelfish just wasn't cutting it). Now, however, ZTube31 is translating all the scenes on the show with Kevin & Yann, and we can finally see the story from the beginning. Here are the first 3 translated clips, and stay tuned for more We start with the first meeting between Kevin (a young rookie who is sensitive, smart, and sexy as hell), and the slightly dangerous older cop, Yann. There's an instant rapport between the two, and Yann asks Kevin out to dinner. He sure ain't Sipowicz! Speaking of which, I can't tell you how exciting it is to see gay men in a cop show who are NOT playing victims or killers. American television has been sorely lacking in that department with so few gay detectives or cops you can count them on one hand. Kyle Secor's bisexual detective Timothy Bayliss on Homicide: Life on the Streets being one of the rare examples. And it's not an unimportant thing. By having gay people always being victims or criminals on these shows it reinforces our status as others and different. Too bad we have to watch French shows to see something different. BTW, there is some NSFW language in the last clip, so beware!" See more clips exploring the relationship of Kevin & Yann after the break In clip #2, Kevin & Yann meet up in the police storeroom for some light snogging (and yes, they actually show the kissing! You won't see that on CSI), then Kevin comes home and tries to explain things to his jealous female roommate ... and this girl has "boiled bunny" written all over her. And in clip #3, Kevin has to deal with a homophobic colleague, and a police sting. In both cases, he shows that he may look adorable, but he isn't afraid to stand up for his rights. You go, Kevin!

Yay!
Merci beaucoup!
C'est magnifique! Now THAT'S what I want to see: a tough, hot gay man who takes no crap from nobody, AND is a softie for romance. Et, il parle français! I'm swooning right now, folks! Je pense que j'aime Nicolas Gob!

Joseph
Sorry if this is a bit OT, but I've been wondering for weeks. Joseph, who are the two men kissing in your profile pic? It looks like a movie I've seen, but I can't be quite sure.
Back on topic, I also really enjoyed the subtitled clips. It would be neat to have a show like on American television!

The two men kissing are Jérémie Renier and Bruno Todeschini from the French film A Love to Hide (Un amour à taire), from 2005, about a gay couple in France during the Nazi occupation; as it happens, Nicolas Gob, who plays Kevin in Les Bleus, plays Renier's younger brother in the film. It's very melodramatic, but quite powerful and moving, thanks especially to the strong cast. It's available on DVD, and I highly recommend it.

Oh Hell! Not another gay show to stalk!
Well, it seems like everyday that I visit AfterElton, there is something new to catch up on. This series looks very good. Hell, like I need another series to stalk! lol...
Thanks so much for sharing this one too.
BTW... I think the French do gay very well. Mu ultimate favorite gay themed film is Just A Question Of Love. There is none better. The two leads are so great together, you would swear they are a couple in reality. Far better than Brokeback Mountain, which I thought was highly overrated. I also have A Love To Hide on DVD. I thought it was excellent.
The french
What is it about the french that can make such good gay related movies? Both in quantity an quality. There are so many.
dannydc im sure you are referring to Juste Une Question DAmour with the adorable Stéphan Guérin Tillié (blushing); because there is another Just a Question of Love (LAmour en Question) an older gay related thriller that is also good.
Juste Une Question DAmour battles it out with Presque Rien, for the favorite spot.
I recently saw a very funny comedy called Times Have Been Better (Le Ciel Sur La Tête), that takes the comming out story from the parents point of view. Could not stop laughing the whole movie.
Geez they are so many.Stephan Guerin-Tillie's Just A Question Of Love
Yep, I meant the one with Stephan and Cyrille Thouvenin. This is the most beautiful gay themed film I think I have ever had the pleasure of watching. I loved it the first time I watched. Stephan and Cyrille have such chemistry, it's almost as if they actually love each other in real life. Would you believe that I usually watch this at least once a month? I have a lot of gay themed favorites, but this one is at the top of my list.
Not that it would ever happen, but I would love to have Ollian's love story on DVD before TPTB break them up. lol...
I have Times Have Been Better on DVD too. It's very good. Hence my remark that French do gay very well!
Looks like an interesting cop series
Thanks Ztube31 for the clips and subtitles!
This looks like a very interesting series to watch, not just for the scenes with Kevin but overall. How have the ratings been for this show in France?
Hey, thanks to everyone for
Hey, thanks to everyone for all the kudos!
This series was a breath of fresh air when it came out last year. It was not a lame copy of big US hit series like CSI or Grey's anatomy and it was not a historical drama. You see, there are three types of series that are successful here (bear with me, I'm jumping my smart bike ;):
- US series: CSI, Heroes, Ugly Betty, Dr House, you name it.
- French 'historical' dramas: A love to hide, Marie Besnard who won an emmy the best female performance last year, etc.
- Very conventional guy-next-door type of stories involving teachers, cops, antique dealers (yeah, I know...).
"Les Bleus" doesn't fit in any of the above categories. It was critically acclaimed and won several prizes but could have had a greater public success (though some episodes had good scores). The good news is: it was successful enough to be signed for another season.
Just when I thought I couldn't get any more...
addicted to the internet and AE, along comes this show. First VL, and now this!...I have lots to keep me busy now. A gritty cop drama with REAL gay representation, who would have thought? Simply great so far! I always knew that Europe is far more liberal than the U.S. but it's now CRYSTAL CLEAR to me that Europeans DO NOT have their collective heads in their asses when it comes to homosexuality. The (homophobic) U.S. (let's just say North America, since I'm talking about continents here) has SO MUCH to learn it's ridiculous! P&G/ATWT/CBS...are you watching and taking notes? The same can be asked of that stupid American Family Association, that seems to be the "pressure" behind the entire NUKE mess and the lack of REAL gay characters on television here as a whole. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong.
As a gay Canadian citizen, I'm far better off living here than the U.S. No offense to my American counterparts, I love Americans, but we're just MORE accepting of LGBT people here. It's so nice to know that as a Country, we don't discriminate anyone here. Everyone is equal under the law and that includes marriage. Don't get me wrong though, there's ALWAYS room for more education and acceptance. Since most of the gay content in television we get here in Canada comes from the U.S., we Canadians are still just as frustrated as the Americans when it comes to REAL/TRUE gay representation. Peace :)

finally....but
French actors..
If you like French actors and gay-themed movies I'd recommend also:
More of Bruno Todeschini in:- De Soie et de Cendre (WW2 drama in two parts with a gay side-story)
- Son Frère
Or Thierry Neuvic in:- Autopsy (very somber..)
- Clara Sheller (very light comedy) - www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBVB7nT1uxA
Or Jean-Michel Portal (and Marcial Di Fonzo Bo) in:More French actors who haven't shyed away from playing gay or in gay-themed movies/tv:
R.I.P. - Heath Ledger [1979 - 2008]
Another thanks
More French..
You're welcome.
Here some more I liked (not all available on DVD though):
And some more actors: Bruno Putzulu, Frédéric Gorny.
R.I.P. - Heath Ledger [1979 - 2008]
Hey, j U d E
Are you L a W les S?
Mille fois mercis pour your list of good French fillums.
BTW Le Clan is known here as 3 Dancing Slaves on Netflix. Pay attention to Selim Kechiouche, who is in Grande Ecole and the bartender in Gael Morel''s Apres Lui,, which also stars Thomas Dumerchez from Le ClanL It's a real gay mafia.
I have to give my top rating to Christophe Honore's Les Chansons d'Amour, or Love Songs with Gregoire Le Prince-Ringuet, another of my hyphenated loves. BTW Gael Morel appears for a second in the movie line of that film. He's the memorable star of Wild Reeds. Now I have to stop because I have forgotten your other list!

I saw this series over a year ago thanks to Ztube31. There has been only one post of the 2nd season though. Z Babe explained that he has other things going on.
I can read French, but not comprehend spoken French well. And I find that we in the US have trouble accessing foreign series. They are Forbidden Love- ( German joke)
