Liveblogging "One Life To Live": Green around the gills

Now that Oliver has made it clear that he wants nothing to with Kyle, he'll probably be grateful to see his once and future flame with another guy ... right?

Join the fun below, and refresh often for updates!

2:05PM EST: Rex is manhandling Schuyler while managing to chew the scenery with his face. Stacy narrows the list of potential baby-daddies to Fish, Kyle, and Schuyler.

Just let me state for the record that I cannot stand those shirts girls wear that have sleeves that hang down to their knees.

Woo-Hoo! We have Pick-up! Kyle cruises new gay Nick (very cute, BTW), and they exchange phone numbers, while Oliver hides behind the locker and kicks his own ass.

2:15PM EST: Stacy settles on Kyle to be her Rex-Proxy. She calls him and says she needs to see him. Oliver approaches and asks if everything's okay, and Kyle says coldly "yeah ... I'll see you around ... or not". Burn! When Kyle leaves Oliver immediately flashes back to the alley kiss. It's okay, I've been flashing back to it, too. Quite a bit.

2:25PM EST: Stacy and Kim? (whoever the girl is who looks like a Bratz Doll) are discussing Kyle, and Stacy says "he's cute, but he's no Rex". Bratz (that's her name from now on) hides in the other room when Kyle comes in and immediately says "i know what you want, so let's just get this over with". Stacy and Bratz both look shocked.

2:30PM EST: There's an unintentionally hilarious scene in the courtroom with a bailiff named "Jason", and then we return to the locker room o' repression, as Oliver approaches GUNS Nick and tells him he should probably stay away from Kyle.

Kyle thinks Stacy summoned him because of his shady past (and I love that Kyle isn't squeaky clean) and when she pushes him against the wall and tries to Alien-face hug him, he says "are you trying to seduce me?" Stacy says "don't you want me to?", and when he responds with "no", she gasps and delivers a classic "oh no you didn't" look.

2:45PM EST: The next two scenes go above and beyond, as Stacy exclaims "You're a guy, why wouldn't you want this?". Kyle starts to explain when Bratz comes in and says "maybe one girl isn't enough. When was the last time you doubled down?" She throws Kyle down and tries to straddle him when Kyle finally reveals to them that he's gay.

The next scene is a hoot, as Nick wants to know why Oliver wants him to stay away from Kyle. He says "are you interested in him?" Oliver says "Me? No, I'm not gay ... I'm a cop" Oh Oliver. They continue to talk about Kyle's shady past, as a hot, sweaty, glistening Nick does a full striptease in front of Oliver. He says "maybe I should talk to Kyle about what you said", as he takes off his underwear and Oliver pretends to look away.

2:55PM EST: Stacy tells Kyle "you are so not gay. When we first met you flirted with me". Kyle says "hey, my people flirt, too", and he makes a quick getaway. Stacy and Bratz try to figure out who to go after next, and we immediately cut to Oliver back in the locker room, still stalking Nick.

Nick gets a call, and as Oliver listens intently, accepts a date for that night with Kyle. Before he can turn completely Kermit green, he gets his own call ... from Stacy.

Preview Time: No preview, but we'll let you know when our next Liveblog is. Stay Tuned!

    Dear OLTL...

Please don't make me fall in love with another guy for Kyle. I really want Oliver to get his shit together and realize what he has with Kyle.

However, if there's a real connect between Kyle and another cutie, please make Oliver suffer when he realizes what he missed.

PS - Cristian should smile a little and Brody should have his shirt off more.

    Awww, Mark Lawson

I rated your posting a 5, just because you posted the screen image of a shirtless (and deliciously hairy) Mark Lawson. He's like a buffer version of Ryan Phillippe.

Me love Mark Lawson too.  And supposedly, he's got a beautiful singing voice.  That makes him even more delicious...

    Dave Doty's picture

    Mark Lawson's Singing VOice

If Mark Lawson does have a beautiful singing voice, he didn't show it in the Summer Nights Soapnet Promo.  He wasn't the worst singer in it (at least he avoided flat notes like some), but he didn't really distinguish himself.  And more than once, he did that "talk in melody" thing people often do when they can't really sing well.  He was much more notable for his greaser chic posing than his singing.

While Summer Nights may not be the ideal song for showing off your vocal range, several of the actors did manage to have at least one of their lines show that they've got the chops.

Kyle's been on the show since early this year; he stripped at Natalie's bachelorette party back in March or April, when he was blackmailing her.

Oh...so he was stripping to make ends meet and then tried the blackmail route...so he was kind of in survival mode? Or did he have a stripper past and this was just the first on air example?

Kyle Wasn't Stripping for a Living

As far as I can recall, Kyle just did the stripping thing to antagonize Natalie during his blackmailing scheme when Kyle found out that Natalie and Jared knew that Jessica's dead child was swapped for Starr's living baby by one of Jessica's alters.

Reading back what I wrote above, I know it sounds bizarre, but I'm pretty sure that that's the reason why Kyle did his own striptease routine at Natalie's bachelorette party.

    Kyle/Nick

Even though I'm pretty regularly defending Fish in these parts, I wouldn't mind Nick and Kyle getting intimate.  It's not like Oliver's staked dibs, and I don't see why Kyle shouldn't get a little nookie while we wait for Fish to get his act together.

Fish and Kyle have sizzling chemistry, and I don't think we have to worry about the people at OLTL losing sight of that.

Plus, at this point, Nick hasn't been more than a nice-looking plot point.  People who are speculating that he'll wind up with Kyle before he's even developed a personality are WAY jumping the gun.  Kind of like every time a guy who MIGHT be gay walks across the screen on ATWT, people start thinking maybe he'll run off with either Noah or Luke and become a new ATWT supercouple.  Hasn't happened yet, and I don't see it happening here.

    There's Also That....

Nick is going to be around for at least a few months while any other guy that wandering into Luke and Noah's orbit were lucky to last a few episodes.   And as for Mason, supposedly a third in a triangle, we haven't seen him in weeks.  Besides, it's hard to tell if Luke and Noah have sex with each other, much less anybody else.   By the way Nick and Kyle were giving each other the once over, I don't see them having a chaste relationship.  So Nick and Kyle may not be a couple, but I think Nick will be around long enough to give Oliver some sleepless nights.  Kyle too, but for different reasons.  LOL!

    The difference though is ...

that when Luke and Noah met they were both teenage virgins gaywise, as opposed to experienced gay men in their mid-20s.   Passanante made it clear that the story she was telling was meant to be a ''first love'' type love story.  Quite a bit different than what's going on here at OLTL.  And while ATWT has now gone on to fail in the intimacy department, Luke and Noah actually did have that pretty hot, wet, shirtless, towel-slapping scene right in the beginning f their story when they showed Nuke coming back from their night swim in the Snyder Pond leading to the famous ''charged moment'' when Luke began to realize that Noah was attracted to him.

    That said

All that said, watching Rex is generally most entertaining to watch - he's goofy, over-the-top fun. Today was a bad example of Rex.

As for Rex's appearance, well, he is Roxy's son on the show, and well, I love me some Roxy, but...

    roxy....

yes, i watched OLTL on soapnet and the only impression i got of roxy was that she is a little out of it (drugs? drinking?)....and i wasnt sure if that is what the show wants viewers to think of her...but it was my first time watching, so eh...
    Ed Kennedy's picture

    You'll learn to love her

You learn to love Roxy pretty quick - she's been nothing but supportive of Kyle, plus some of the stuff that comes out of her mouth is classic. I *so* want to go drinking with Roxy. She's the ultimate hag.
    Dave Doty's picture

    Roxy

Roxy's a mess, and that's part of her charm (and a big part of why she hits it off so well with Kyle).

OLTL has several character types it likes to keep revisiting.  Villains who don't get redeemed, legally insane mentally ill people, and comic relief nutjobs who wouldn't work if you stopped to think about it.  Roxy's in that category, and so was Addie (and to a degree, Tina).

You'll like Roxy better if you just go with the flow and don't analyze the character or performance too much.

    dkellergrl2001's picture

    I really don't like Rex.

Everything about the character is over for me. There's just something about the character, that just annoys the hell out of me. I really don't like Gigi as well, but she needs to grow a pair and kick him to the curb. I also don't get why Stacy's so obessed with him.

    Nick

Is a really really the first risky move of this story. Till now the story was interesting and well writen, but all that they did, was made before, so they were walking a path that was made succesfully before.

Nick on the other hand is a clear risky move, right now most of people aren't exactly in love with Oliver, so introducing a new guy could change a lot of things

    Oliver will become...

...a more sympathetic character over time. Plus, if they lose control of the story then they'll just make Nick a player and steer Kyle back to Oliver. Or...even better...the potential of two gay couples on the show if Kyle and Nick stick...Oliver can find a new guy.

    Of course

the writers have the control, and they can make Oliver more sympatheric character. But it's risky, if people have a really good reaction to Nick, could change the way of the storyline. I'm pretty sure that if ATWT introduced a new gay character for Luke during the Maddie affair, probably Noah would be history long time ago.

Maybe it is a risky move

Yes, it could be a risky move, but at least TPTB on OLTL are willing to take that risk in making sure that Kyle has options of other men being interested in him.

It would be ridiculous for Kyle (who's a hottie) to continue to hang around waiting and hoping for Oliver to stop denying his real feelings for him. It also shows that there are more gays in Llanview then just those two characters.

I see it as a win win. We get to see Kyle, flirting with another man, who's obviously attracted to him, while we also get to see Oliver, simmering in his own jealous and possessive juices, because he wants to "be with" Layla.

OLTL is the king of risky moves...

This show takes major risks.  This is the same show that had Marty loosing her memory and falling in love with her rapist... Todd.  She then talked him into walking off the roof of a building (he fell into a river and John saved his life.)

OLTL very rarely plays it safe, and if people react well to Nick expect to see him show up from time to time.  The show likes to build up its smaller, guest characters into bigger roles (like Fish, Mo, Noelle, and Shaun)

    I am enjoying this

I am really enjoying this soap, although I'm staying cautious. I think the idea of falling in love with one's rapist is ridiculous. Although, sadly, I can see a lot of women thinking it is somehow romantic.

I do like that it is modern and current when it comes to human sexuality. I don't like shows to be oversexed the way primetime teen soaps sometimes are. But I like that people on OLTL can talk about sex as if it were a normal thing, since it plays such a big role in events.

I really, really love the habit of building smaller roles into big ones. That helps create the illusion of the community being in a real city. It doesn't feel like such an insular group of people.

I assume you're talking about Marty/Todd here, unless there's another storyline I'm not aware of.  Lord knows, there's a disturbing number of rape storylines in daytime.

I have extremely mixed feelings about the Todd/Marty storyline.  I had no problem with the amnesia storyline.  It was clear that, despite his belief that he was trying to help her, that what he was doing was really sick and twisted, and it blew up and damaged both of their lives as a consequence.

I agree that the current story is very disturbing, and I wish they weren't doing it.  I still hope, though, that they aren't really going with "Marty is in love with Todd."  I think it's understandable that she would have conflicted feelings considering the long, complicated history between them, especially with regards to the time she felt happy during her amnesia.  Hopefully, this storyline will show her working through those feelings and realizing that no, she doesn't love him.

The story is still "creepy in a bad way," though.

    Rape in soaps

Rape was always use in soap in a very shallow way. There's a lot of storys (not only in soap but in telenovelas too) about this subject of a woman fallin for her rapist, and i don't doubt that this could happen in real life (there's a good bunch of women who end marrying a killer who is in prison), but for most women rape is a very traumatic experience and i think that soap must take the issue more seriously

    Risk

I don't really recall either Luke or Noah launching multiple blackmail schemes, so I don't think it's TOTALLY the first time they've taken a risk with these characters.

And the Fish-hate that I've seen is exclusively from people who only came on recently.  The bulk of their long-term viewers (and those of us newbies who've launched into the back catalog) have a more balanced view of the characters.  Not just Kyle's dark side (although that's important to understanding their dynamic), but also Fish doing things like putting his job on the line to help his friend John stand up to the mayor and free Marty Saybrooke from Todd's influence.

It's always dangerous to assume that agreement on an internet forum reflects a general view, but it's even more so to assume that AE's OLTL fans are going to reflect broader OLTL viewership.

    jjose712's picture

    Fish-hate

I don't hate Fish, i'm just having problems to empathise with him. And i don't think it's a problem of being a recent watcher, i read in a forum, a girl who just doesn't believe that Fish is gay at all, because in her opinion Fish was writen and played  straight from the begining and they change that when the writers decide the gay storyline (i don't know if that's true because i only watched a couple of old episodes). My problem always was the lack of motivation for all the bearding (nobody is questioning Fish orientation), but this problem will be solved soon acording to the spoilers (and it'll be pretty easy empathise with Fish then)

And yes, Luke and Noah are totally different (even when they have a lot in common too), but Kish are adults, so it's supposed to have a stories behind them. And one thing is the overall view of the character, and other different is the character in the context of their relationship. Oliver is a good guy, in fact is clearly a better guy than Kyle (who has a dark side), but in their dynamics, Kyle is honest, and Fish not

Well.. I wonder. Especially with Oliver. Do you sincerely think he has had another gay relationship since, or before Kyle?

Kyle probably has, but I'd love to find out more about it. Not the number, but who, for how long, why he/they broke up. He did say his and Fish's relationship was the most meaningful of his relationships ever. Would be fun/interesting to hear about Kyles coming out story, at some point. I know that folks really don't like Stacey, but she along with her tacky stripper friend are definitely bringing the funny in the storyline.

He's FANTASTIC. I LOVE how he's pushing Oliver's buttons by openly flirting with the gym bunny hottie, right in front of him. Knowing that Oliver's watching him like a hawk, getting more possessive and jealous by the minute.

Changing My Mind About Skankcy, i.e., Stacy and Loving Nick

OK, I have hated the Stacy character for so long but just in the span of two days, she's suddenly become great comic relief thanks to the best advice ever from her "life coach" Kimberly.  These two trashy gals really do bring the funny to the story.

Kyle's last name is "Lewis."  And he is so diesel that his milkshake brings the boys and the girls to the yard!

I have to echo what other posters are saying about the striptease scene with Oliver and Nick.  On ATWT, Noah dropped his towel post-Maddie sex so Luke could get a peek at little Noah.

OLTL upped ATWT by having a full-blown, non-accidental stripping down of a gay guy in front of a closet case with two out actors playing the characters.  That scene was just all sorts of hot and funny.  Scott Evans slayed me with his facial expressions when Oliver tried not to look at the goods Kyle was likely to get a taste of.

    Keep it up, OLTL!!!

That scene in the gym between Fish and Nick? Was hilarious!!

Scott did a great job in that scene.  :-)
