Liveblogging "One Life To Live": The mystery of Brian Joseph McElhane
Okay, what the hell is going on here? Cristian and Layla are throwing around a book called How To Tell Your Parents You're Gay by Brian Joseph McElhane (and it looks to play a part in a sitcom-esque classic "misunderstanding" today). There's just one problem ... Brian Joseph McElhane doesn't exist. If you Google him, the only thing you'll get is Ed's Daytime Drive-by from yesterday. Which means either TPTB on the show used "Random Author Name Generator" ... or something weird is going on. Hmm... Anyway, join us for the fun, as Oliver hopefully will come out to Kyle, and refresh for updates. 2:05PM EST: Carlotta picks up "the book" and reads the title out loud, then slowly looks at Cristian. Cris says "mommy, wait". How cute is it that Cris calls her "mommy". Awww! Cole is about to be shot in the back of the head by the surfer-dude blond cop. Somehow I think he'll be stopped. Rachel has been put on the stand by That Bitch Tea Delgado, and is paying the price. She brings up her hooker/drug addict past. Stay classy, Tea. 2:10PM EST: This stuff with Carlotta is cute, even if the whole "gay misunderstanding" schtick is as old as the hills. She tells Cristian that she loves him even though he's gay, and that she accepts it, and that he doesn't have to hide it anymore. She talks about noticing "the signs", and a bemused Layla pitches in with "because of all the time he spends at the gym?", and Carlotta agrees and says "and all the trouble he has with women". Cris is flummoxed, and tries to get Layla to vouch for his heterosexuality. 2:20PM EST: Has Dorian always been this shrill-sounding? All I hear is "Kaw! Kaw! Kaw!" The blond surfer-dude cop is shot by John, and as a dazed Cole is led out of his cell, Oliver swoops in to check on the fallen cop. Layla reluctantly tells Carlotta that "The Book" is for a friend of theirs, and that Cristian is not gay. There's talk of how accepting Carlotta is even with being a church lady, but the only thing I could think was "that other actress quit over this? 2:25PM EST: Tea has completely destroyed Rachel on the stand, and as Rachel runs out of the courtroom, Nora gets in Tea's face and asks how she could do that. Tea yells "I did it for my client!", at which point Matthew points at her and screams "You're fired!" I'm liking this kid more and more.
2:40PM EST: I love that Oliver is focusing on Police Cop business, and he and John head on out together to capture the bad guys. Layla and Cristian laugh off what happened with his mom, and then talk about giving "The Book" to Oliver. Layla commends him for going into a bookstore and buying "The Book" for him, which is something a lot of straight guys might be too uncomfortable to do. Cristian admits that two guys at the bookstore actually slipped him their phone numbers, prompting Layla to call him "gay catnip". 2:45PM EST: Tea drives Nora over the edge, and Nora delivers a hot slap across her face. The judge holds Nora in contempt, and for good measure holds Tea in contempt as well. Ha! Oliver and John approach the mayor's office, and John reminds Oliver that they have to play this by "The Book". So, they're going to tell the mayor's parents that he's gay? I'm confused. 2:55PM EST: Matthew is mad at himself and mad at Tea, but since Tea has been put in a cell with Nora, he should probably be worried about the both of them. Oliver and John bust into the mayor's office with guns blazing, but he's nowhere to be found. Meanwhile, The Russian mobster shows up at Todd's house ready to shut him up ... permanently. And once again, Layla shoots down Cristian's not-too-subtle desire to be with her. Poor Cristian. But hey, he still has those two numbers! Preview Time: Damn, no Kyle today! Well, it'll happen next week for sure, and we'll be here for all the fun! Submitted by on Fri, 2009-09-04 14:00. |

This storyline was the guilty
That book
Besides the fact that it's a fake book (do they have to pay royalties to show a book cover?), with a fake author - that cover. Seriously? Orange, with matching gender symbols? Tacky. Homos would design it better. I hope.
And how does this become a comic misunderstanding when it's so easy to clear up?
And how the hell did Officer McDirty go into a cell wearing his gun, and how does he intend to escape after shooting Cole inside the jail?
The Sign
You mean like the way a flouncy, teenage Rex used to listen to his Ace of Base CD, over and over and over? ;Þ
ETA: Oops. This was supposed to be a reply to your second comment, Ed. My bad.
And images of a gay, teenaged Rex are even funnier because...
You mean like the way a flouncy, teenage Rex used to listen to his Ace of Base CD, over and over and over? ;Þ
Which is funny if you're a long time follower of the show. When Rex was introduced (as a teen, played by John Paul Lavoisier, same as now) he was slated to be gay. That was changed based on chemistry between him and an actress in his storyline (which actually turned out to be a great story), but the hilarious thing is that J.P.'s performance has gotten, if anything, more gay, since Rex was turned straight, and I love it. There's no question Rex is straight, but the character, as in life, has some pretty gay characteristics that make him awesome to watch.
Gay Rex
Every time this comes up, I make the following observation, and every time it's ignored. I guess as long as it keeps coming up, I'll keep saying it until someone can answer my question:
The first time I heard this, I hit Google, and the only reference I came up with was an interview with JPL in which he said that at one point, he was called in, told that they were thinking about making his character gay, and asked how he felt about it (he said he didn't care one way or the other.)
This certainly doesn't sound like a character initially intended to be gay, but like a potential new direction they were once toying with taking the existing character. And not so much a plan that got scuttled, as a possibility they considered then dismissed. JPL brought it up not because he thought it was a significant part of the character's history, but as an example of the only time he was consulted on the character's direction.
If anyone has a source for a more involved version of the "Gay Rex" angle, I'd love to see it.

Brian Joseph McElhane
I couldn't google up anything on OLTL and McElhane, or any McElhanes of note (closest was Chris McElhane, whose only credit seems to be "worked in the Camera Crew on the TV show Cheerleader U").
But if I lower my mind to Son Of The Beach level, Brian Joseph McElhane would translate in rude punnage to "BJ me"?
Two additional points
1) Layla is pure evil for what she's doing to Cristian, but I'm loving watching his mom play this out. She "saw the signs" - question is, did Roxy see the signs in Rex?
2) Even the stunt coordinator/sound effects guy for ATWT laughed at that gunshot.
Oh, and snicks, I like your interpretation better, but I heard Cristian say "mami" not "mommy"
Mami
Cristian
Rocks. He has always called Carlotta "Mami/Mammy!"
I am loving his impersonation of Oliver Fish's "I'm not gay!" routine.
Exactly.
Exactly. Patricia M. had been on the show for years and I'm really shocked that she would have an "issue" over Carlotta realizing that her religious values shouldn't be used to keep someone else from being happy. Regardless of that sad fact, I'm enjoying Sandra Santiago as the nuCarlotta.
Love me less, but love me a long time - Les Chansons D'Amour
Gay catnip
The Gay Catnip line was funny - so I decided to see if that was a common phrase I was too uncool to know. I came across two knockoff LOLz that referenced Gay Catnip:
and
So while Cristian is certainly something, especially when those guns are bared, per Google, the above is Gay Catnip.
Children these days...
...what will they think of next...
I'd never heard of gay catnip before.
yes...
I can vouch for the gay catnip tag. Kris is definitely gay catnip. Meow!
I'd like to add that the guy that plays the doctor on OLTL is so attractive. The kiss at the very end of the episode was really hot.
*goes to take a cold shower*
Gay Catnip
I haven't heard that before either. And I thought I was fairly up with the times. :(

Laugh out loud funny
Oliver and John approach the mayor's office, and John reminds Oliver that they have to play this by "The Book". So, they're going to tell the mayor's parents that he's gay? I'm confused.
Snicks, this is HILARIOUS!!!
btw, I'd never heard of gay catnip, but from those google posts, looks like it's defined as a straight guy that attracts the gays. I'd say Chris is it for sure.
Gatnip
Gay Catnip is something I've heard called Gat-nip, and generally means any man (or even object) so desirable as to make the gays run around in circles with our asses in the air yowling. Witness scenes at our recent Design Expo in Cape Town- who knew an ergonomic couch in fuchsia could have such an effect..
That book is lamest plot macguffin ever!
Question: What does Cristian actually do besides hang around in sleeveless tops looking smoking hot? Oliver stopped them going to 'work' the other day for his two episode long coming out extravaganza, but I wondered: Did the man with the smoking guns actually get to work? Where is that? I vaguely recall a club where that blonde woman was, the one who flew off to 'Tahiti' to confront that aged surfer- is he a barman there?
Oliver would do well to consider being caught in the line of fire at this point- not fatally of course- but consider the pro's of a well placed office injury: taking one for the team would bypass the need for messy confrontations in that apartment, would ensure one of those precious commendations for bravery his father apparently has dozens of, would have Mr. and Mrs Fish Senior at his bedside full of caring and support and without tricksy questions re: sexuality, and finally, would also ensure days of footage of Offizer Hunk kept in hospital in a nice, loose tunic.. Imagine the scene as medical student Kyle rushes to his bedside and looks professionally at his chart, tears dripping and smudging the nurses notes while Nick broods in the waiting room... Im just saying..

OMG, Srsly
That was Teh Awesome.
Please tell me they burst into the debate with guns drawn. And please tell me Destiny gets caught in the crossfire. I can't think of any logical, solid story reason for it, but I'd forgive the gaping plot hole. Also, Fish should come out during a firefight.
And I guess Tea does have a kid. Damn! So, where is s/he? I'm assuming that Ross was holding out the divorce in hopes of seeing his kid,so he wouldn't be raising it either. There doesn't seem to be a kid already on the show.
ATWT note: looking at what Martha Byrne did on General Hospital today, and what NB was doing on my catch-up episode for the day (Holden's funeral), I'd say she made the right call. Oh, wait: does she have to move to CA? Is she still on the AMC writing staff?
GH in CA

GH is filmed in CA so she's already there.
Really?
Martha Byrne
There is no correlation.
There is absolutely no correlation whatsoever between where Martha Byrne went (be it an East Coast or West Coast soap) and whether people would enjoy her performance as a character other than Lily Snyder. The geography is clearly irrelevant. I just found Andrea Floyd to be mediocre when I know Byrne can do better work since I've followed ATWT for over 20 years and have seen what she can bring to the table as an actress.
I thought there'd be more layers to Andrea instead of her being the obvious culprit in this lame Brianna Hughes storyline. That kind of lazy writing I expect from Jean Passanante when they bring over "name" stars from West Coast soaps like Wally Kurth and Sarah Joy Brown, both of whom played short-term psychos on ATWT.
But I guess Bob Guza's no better. I still don't understand how his writing team won the Emmy over Ron Carlivati's but whatevs...
D'Oh!
Please allow me to complete this thought I left hanging:
There doesn't seem to be a kid already on the show.
...who could be revealed to secretly have been Tea's child all along. There does, in fact, appear to be a kid already on the show. Several, in fact. If only Matthew could somehow turn out to be Tea's kid, that would actually make me not hate the idea.
Omigosh
Matthew Buchanan's paternity has been retconned to death...and played a big role in busting up Bo and Nora over a decade ago. At first, everyone thought he was Sam Rappaport's son and DNA tests even proved so.
Later on, TPTB had a change of heart and revised history to make Matthew a Buchanan and Bo's son.
I think any kid Tea may have had with Todd or Ross has yet to be cast.
Matthew and Tea
Stacy Haiduk v. Marcia Cross
Tea's Kid
I'll put forth my theory about this, that I've been plugging for weeks on my OLTL blog:
Tea's kid is Jack (the one that Todd gave to David Vickers to get rid of in Mexico). When they sort it out, they'll realize that they never really got the right kid back...and the one they got -- Jack -- is really Tea's baby. Whether the father is Todd or Ross is left to be seen. And where the real Blair-baby is...well, it's probably not Margaret Cochran, unless they did one of those soap-opera-time-aging things.
Hot Piece
That was Teh Awesome.
Please tell me they burst into the debate with guns drawn. And please tell me Destiny gets caught in the crossfire. I can't think of any logical, solid story reason for it, but I'd forgive the gaping plot hole. Also, Fish should come out during a firefight.
Am I the only one who thinks it hot when a gay dude burst through a door with his piece in his hand?
And, what's with the Destiny hate? It seems a lot of people don't like her.
Is it the actress or the character?
I just heard a rumor she's being recast, BTW.
Destiny
I can't speak for everyone, but for me it's both. The actress is terrible, which is probably the worse part for me. If they do a recast, I'll give the revamped character a fair shot.
But the character herself is very immature, and completely unable to grasp the consequences of most of her action.
Take the scene where she got fired from her job at the country club. The guy she dumped the drink on was an obnoxious tool, but still: she dumped a drink on a customer at her job. She seemed genuinely surprised that she got fired. Duh.
And the whole surgery storyline: I find Matthew very sympathetic. He's clearly desperate enough that he's willing to risk death to get out. I find that very relatable. Destiny just clings to her hero worship of her brother, completely denying that there's any risk at all. When Matthew was agonizing before the wedding, she could have either reassured him that the risks were worth it, or said that whether he did it or not, she would support him either way. Instead, she assured him - literally promised him - that Wonder Brother would never let him die.
She's gone beyond encouraging Matthew, trying to bring her brother to town, bringing Tea into the picture and giving him the idea to sue his parents. She's hip deep in adult decisions, but isn't showing even the slightest sense of having an adult understanding of what's at stake.
Still, I'm quite willing to hate soap characters one story, and like them the next. So if they get a new actress, and write the character better in future, I'll be open-minded. We seemed doomed to a Matthew-Destiny romance, so I'd like it to be able to actually work.
Re: Destiny
I actively LOATHE the character of Destiny and keep hoping some hole will open up in Llanview and suck her into an alternate universe from which there is no possibility of return.
I agree with much of what Dave Doty says: I hate to say it, but Destiny strikes me as the most poorly written character on OLTL--and they usually do a great job crafting their characters. But Destiny seems to be nothing but a plot device to "activate" other characters to do things.
Most of all, however, it's the actress who plays Destiny. I don't want to sound cruel, especially criticising a child, but it's quite simple: Shenell Edmonds Cannot ACT. She just can't. She has no sense of the emotions to play (though, admittedly, the conception of the character doesn't help) but worse are her line readings: it's like she's reading from a book, woodenly. I literally cringe when I see her try to act.
Thus, it frustrates me that she is constantly seen in the company of Matthew, since Eddie Alderson is giving a terrific performance: like many here, I find the darkening of his character to be a wonderful story decision and hope that they continue down that road--they're laying the framework for another great shady character in the future.
Re: Hot Piece and Destiny
It was very hot of Oliver to bust through that door. Very butch of Scott Evans. Very hot.
Shenell Edmonds, poor child, is a wretched actress. Eddie Alderson acts circles around her as do those girls who play Lily and Holden's daughters on ATWT and Alexis's youngest daughter on GH. ALL of her line deliveries have been so awful, and I hate the fact that Destiny is also being written as this stereotypical sassy, little black girl who gives romantic advice to folks like Tea Delgado by telling Tea that Destiny KNOWS the look of a woman who's out for Tea's man. WTF.
The first Adriana was awful and she was recast with Melissa Gallo, who became David Fumero's wife (LUCKY, LUCKY GIRL!). I would not mind a Destiny recast at all. I refuse to believe that Edmonds was the best candidate for the role OLTL could find even if the casting call only extended within the NY Tri-State area.
Hysterically thick book...
for a topic that couldn't rate those many pages, unless there are copious illustrations - which would be even funnier. I could conceive of it as a chapter in "Gayitude for Dummies" but really!
I suspect today's show might be a contrast for what's coming - but the show would have been even better if Oliver had been able to see it. Gotta give Cris megas for his handling of the situation. Plus the writing was really good. Maybe the writers having been using their own catnip.
that book is....
that book is really thick. a lot of pages.
usually when i go into a bookstore and i see books such as "how to tell..." it's a small book with about 20-30 pages.
are the soaps on monday? or will they start from Tuesday?
Monday
I love Layla in this episode
he was really bitchy with poor Christian when his mother thought that he was gay.
And after watching that scene i'm still wondering why old Carlota refuse to play it. It was totally innofensive
Regarding Carlota
Mauceri is stupider than I thought.
Ahahahahaha
"I objected to speaking the truth of what that person, how that person would live and breathe and act in that storyline,"
Someone lost control of that sentence as it came out of her mouth, and for once, it wasn't me! (OTOH, I did just inadvertently refer to myself as "her." Curse you, Patricia Mauceri! You've won this round!)
That is clearly a case of verbal diarrhea.
Someone hand Mauceri some Imodium or some other similar type of drug, please!
Wonder how her co-workers like Tuc Watkins (her co-star in I THINK I DO), Scott Evans et al. feel about this...
mamy
I really like the new Carlotta (loved SS on GL already) and her scene with Cristian and Layla was hilarious.
Love Fish doing his cop job too and I'll wait eagerly for next week, cause my Kyle addiction is in seriously need of a fix.

OLTL Liveblog
Are you really just posting that here to start a big fan war or something.
Don't get me wrong, I love ATWT AND OLTL.
But didn't we just have a 48 years war about folks doing this kind of thing yesterday or the day before?
Why not post comments ABOUT ATWT (that have nothing to do with OLTL) in the ATWT Liveblog thread that corresponds with your comment?
Nothing wrong with you comment I'm just saying, why stir shite up when it's unnecessary to do so.
Seriously. It's not cute.
alright, ya know what?
ok freeman. call me rude if you want, but take your ATWT opinions somewhere else where it is RELEVANT
this post is for the show ONE LIFE TO LIVE....not AS THE WORLD TURNS...please tell me you understand that. i have a feeling you do.
i'm glad you like ATWT. really. good for you. i would throw a parade for you if i could.
so, all that said...i'll repeat myself...take your ATWT opinions where they are relevant. in fact, there was a liveblog yesterday of the show. you should go there. you keep doing this, i am pretty sure a lot of people are going to be very, very ticked off at you
have a good evening.
