Liveblogging "The Young & The Restless": Don't bother to knock

While we're still digesting the fact that long-lost Phillip is gay, Y & R serves up the main course of Rafe and Adam. This episode looks to be a hoot, as Fish Bait learns a lesson about bursting into someone's room. How rude!

Join us for the fun, and refresh often for updates!

12:35PM EST: Mary Jane is still explaining the plot to her stuffed kitty, while Daniel and Noah arrive at the hospital to find that Nick and Phyllis have been denied access to Summer. When Phyllis tells them that someone has accused them of child-abuse, they want to know who would do that. Who should round the corner at that very moment but ...Sharon.

12:40PM EST: Rafe enters the hospital room to talk to Victor, who tells him "I brought you down here to talk about what happened to Adam.". Rafe looks shocked and has a hazy flashback to the the hot off-camera snogging session, and then Victor says "i want to find out who's responsible". Rafe looks perplexed, and when Victor tells him about Adam's fellow prisoners sticking needles in his eyes, Rafe looks at him like "are you just putting random words together?" Victor explains what happened, and that he wants Rafe to find out who did it.

12:45PM EST: Meanwhile, Adam is rehearsing what he's going to say to Adam to "end things", in what turns out to be an unintentionally hilarious scene. Even the Couch of Sin can't help but giggle.

12:50PM EST: More hospital drama, but I can't get past Sharon's hideously gaudy necklace. Mr. T would be jealous.

12:55PM EST: Rafe pays a visit to Adam, who's still rehearsing his break-up speech, and lets Adam know that Victor has hired him to investigate the prison assault. Rafe sees right through the lies, however, and accuses Adam of making the whole thing up. He checked the records at the prison, and nowhere does Adam mention being attacked with needles. Meanwhile, Mary Jane is going all crazy eyes with Victor at the hospital, who tells her to stay away from his family.

1:00PM EST: Nick has been at the hospital for a while, he looks ... dirty. He definitely needs a ... hot shower. A hot shower as he lathers up his body .... Anyway, Sharon and Phyllis bond in the hospital chapel.

1:05PM EST: My god, Sharon's necklace looks like strands of gold with multi-colored Sucrets attached. Adam says "you don't know what is like in the big house". Rafe says "Cut the bull. I've seen OZ, I know what it's like, and your story doesn't add up!". Adam says "Are you calling me a liar?" Um ... duh. Rafe says "I think you're hiding something", and Adam contemplates "what is the least amount of sex i'm going to be able to get away with this time?"

1:10PM EST: Adam says "I didn't file that report because i didn't want to be a narc", which Rafe still doesn't buy, so Adam resorts to Plan Gay. He approaches Rafe and says "remember when we had sex?" and tries to go into seduction mode, but Rafe pulls away and says "how stupid do you think I am?"

1:20PM EST: Mary Jane (who looks like she's wearing a negligee) sneaks up and listens in on Sharon and Phyllis. Her eyes narrow ... uh-oh! Fish Bait tells Nick she's going back to the house, and we cut to Adam telling Rafe "I thought i found someone I could be "me" with. How could you accuse me of using that? What I did with you, I've never done with anyone before." Rafe looks stunned, and is about to leave, when he turns back, misty-eyed and says "Adam, about the cherry popping .."

1:25PM EST: Now the scene we've all been waiting for ... Fish Bait comes home, talks to herself, and goes upstairs to ask Adam someth...Whoa! She walks in on Adam and Rafe (or perhaps their stand-ins) embracing. Unfortunately, we can't see their upper bodies, so perhaps they were ... kissing? Checking each other for lice? Having a stare-down?

    The Soliloquy

That was an over-the-top "dialog" with Adam.

    I loved the Rafe/Victor non-conversation!

    Oh, we've all done it

Who hasn't sat and rehearsed the "it was fun, but I'm not gay" speech to give to either that boy at band/science/space/math/soccer camp, or the guy you just want rid of?

I recall my rehearsal was just as successful in stopping the next encounter as it looks like Adam's is gonna be.

OMG, the dramatics on that scene

I cant believe Rafe is going to fall for that! But I think he really is.

    unintentionally?

Ha!  I thought the couch -rehearsal was intentionally hilarious!

    Intentionally hilarious may be it

You may be right about some of this being intentionally hilarious - "When you called and said you were coming over, I got so excited" caused me to snort my Coke up my nose. Is this supposed to be funny?

LOL. you nailed it on the dot, I read that just as Adam threw his break up line out the window and he is suddenly "happy"  when his story starts falling apart.

    News flash!

"Rafe, what I did with you, I'd never done with anyone before."

I'm guessing he could tell that Adam. It's generally painfully obvious.

Somebody made a decision somewhere (I think) ...

Because the SON website had about 10 still photos from the scene we saw today, and a couple of them seemed to show evidence of at least stunt kissing.

Here's a set photo snapped farther out when Rafe was still grabbing on to Adam's tee.

Ha ha .. Maybe *the kiss* will be shown in a milisecond flashback inside Nikki's brain tomorrow.

    Gay kiss ban ?

    Eh,

I think it's more like, "why show these two kissing?"

I'll bet their saving their first gay kiss ever for an actual romatic couple.

    Since...

.... we know they're actually going to do a gay love story, I agree with that.  Still, it is a little annoying.  I'm still loving the story though.

I'm sort of OK with it

To be honest, for some reason, I'm OK with with Rafe/Adam happening off screen.  It's fauxmosexual taken to an unpleasant extreme, and I'm not sure it's a healthy image.  Do I think all our images have to be positive? No, but until we have more than one positive image on daytime, I can handle the negative relationship being more in the imagination.  Now if they do Phillip/Rafe offscreen, then I'm ticked. Double standard? You bet. But for now, I'm OK with that.

And Anthony can correct me, but Y&R isn't a particularly affectionate soap to start with.  The few times I can remember the hets shirtless and in bed making out, it really stands out as almost an event.  This is, more than any of the others, and certainly more than OLTL, a "hugging" soap more than a "naked shower together" soap.

    Bringing the Heat

Y&R isn't one to show romantic scenes left and right all the time, that is true.  But they can bring the heat when necessary.  Phyllis and Nick have been lighting their living room, office, elevator, shower  in flames for the past three years or so.  They had a particularly raunchy shower scene a few months back as well.  And then there were Sharon's romps with Nick, Billy and Jack in recent memory, especially Sharon and Nick's first time after their divorce up in the cabin.  But yeah, overall they don't make things overtly sexual most times.

Once upon a time I died.  And like my namesake I got better.

    Why would they do that?

It's pretty clear no gay kissing is allowed.  It really takes the "fun" out of the whole story.  It's like Y&R wants to get in on the whole "gays in daytime" thing without fearing offending any bigots.  Lame.

    sorry

"It's pretty clear no gay kissing is allowed."

Sorry, that's not clear to me at all. I think the opinion Anthony and I expressed is just as valid.

The ATWT no kissing rule has migrated to Y&R

Hopefully they'll drop it a lot faster than ATWT did.   The final shot with Fish Bait walking in on their - well, elbows - was particularly egregious.  I see a pan to mistletoe in the future.

    Disapointed

After ATWT surpase the kiss ban, i thought every other soap will start in that point, but i was wrong.

I hope OLTL storyline starts where Nuke are today in terms of kissing

I love how Mulhaney is playing Adam. He has sociopath down!  I still think Rafe is up to something though. "I never did that with anyone before!" LOL! Scotchguard the couch, I'm coming in!

    A bit put off

With the promo stills seen in magazines I was expecting a bit more than what we saw.  Seemed like a definite editing choice was done there.  I get that this is a twisted sexual game being played between the characters but I don't think if this was a man and a woman they'd be showing a hand around a waist while someone gets an eyeful.  I know Y&R's audience is generally more on the conservative side but c'mon.  I still find the whole story engaging.  MM is growing on me as Adam.  And Rafe I pray is not fully buying into all of this.  He seems too smart to become another pawn in Adam's games.  But I thought Ashley was too, but look how that has turned out.

Once upon a time I died.  And like my namesake I got better.

    bottom line...

...no kiss.  Sad.  After all the hoopla, this is what we get.  Again, they have no issues showing hetero couples of all ages, walks of life, and what not, making out like rabbits.  That was definitely offensive to me.

    YR Lateblog | 7.8

brothasoul (seeing the header picture of Nikki, Adam & Rafe before watching the episode): "Was that Nikki walking in on Adam & Rafe!?"  *note to self - visit afterelton's liveblog after you have seen the show!

If Adam and Rafe don't kiss on this episode, some AfterElton members are gonna be pissed...

9:45pm - Summer's stuffed bunny is named "Mr Ears"!?  I guess the name Bugs was taken...I want Whatever Happened to Mary Jane's cat to reanimate and scratch out her eyes so bad.  Where is Tabitha Lenox when you need her?...and where the hell is Phillip!?

10:00pm - A straight-ish man of questionable integrity practicing how to let a gay guy down easy, a-l-o-u-d.  Cute.  Hard to believe, but cute...

10:05pm - Rafe (to Adam): Someone stabbed you in the eyes with a needle? Really!? That's the best you could come up with!  Adam (to Rafe): "You didn't have all these questions last night!"

10:15pm - I don't think Rafe would want me to answer that question about his level of stupidity.  Could the AfterEltoners who suggested that Rafe was playing Adam have been right?

10:20pm - I am so glad that in my time away from Genoa City Amber & Daniel got their ish together.  Deacon is going to love messing that up!...So Rafe won't fall for the sweetalk, but he falls for the fake push away.  Sorry hopeful AfterEltoners.  I think ol' Rafe is a lost cause...

    10:25pm - Mary Jane is bus-teeeed!

    10:26pm - Adam & Rafe are bus-teeeed! (I wish I hadn't known it was coming)

If YR continues to alternate the storylines of Phillip & Rafe we could have gay visibility, on one soap, five days a week.  What a concept!

    thanksnicks

    Y&R

Oh, wait... Is SH the first actress to play both Lana Lang AND Mary Jane? Ba DUM bum.

Oh, I hope Victor finds out, thinks Adam is really gay,  and is fine with it, and starts actively pushing for Adam and Rafe to spend lots of time together.

I'm sadly having a little trouble seeing how MM could be kept on the show when this all blows up.  He's not going to have any friends, or family that don't hate him.  No money or influence or huge company he can use to force his way into storylines.

Well, maybe Heather will be stupid enough to still believe in him.  And once she recuses herself, there doesn't appear to be anyone else in Genoa City who actually prosecutes criminal cases.

Wait, Phyllis hates Amber?  After months of watching this show, with both of them almost constant presences, don't you think I'd know that by now?  Still, I didn't even know Daniel was her son until he needed bail money, so I shouldn't be surprised it took months for the show to bother to fill in the new viewer on these kinds of basic relationships.

And for lack or anywhere better to say it, today on ATWT, when Parker took Johnny out for a snack, I was SURE this story was going to end with Carly drunk drving into them.  Whew.
