Liveblogging "The Young & The Restless": Ghosts from the past
It's time to head back to Genoa City to witness Phillip's big super secret reveal. How will his family react? And why am I so enamored of Nina (played by the fabulous Tricia Cast?) Could it be that she has a "super secret" in her past? Join us for the fun below, and refresh often for updates! Before we begin, a word about the hotness that is Tricia Cast. Not only is she the finest actor on this show, she was also one of my favorite child stars when I was young. She starred in a ton of early-80's tv shows (including as Jason Bateman's sister in the short-lived series It's Your Move), and then there's this classic nugget (watch to the end). But I digress. Now on with the show .... "Wheeee!" 11:00AM EST: And we have ... the Young & The Restless! Phew! 11:05AM EST: Phyliis is being questioned by Heather about abusing Summer. Nina, Kay and Jill are discussing the Phillip situation and Jill accuses Nina of wanting to tear the family apart. Cane is furious that Phillip came back, but Phillip says he did it so Cane wouldn't have to deal with the situation alone. 11:10AM EST: Phyllis wants to know who accused her of child-abuse, and we cut to Mary Jane reclining on her bed, practicing her exposition skills with her stuffed cat. Love her. Kay, Jill and Nina are still going at it, and Kay talks about her family history being re-written, and her faith being rattled to the core. Cane and Phillip start arguing in the hospital corridor, with Phillip saying "you knew the risks", and Cane saying "stuff it, shorty, this is my life, not yours!" 11:15AM EST: Phillip leaves, but Cane says he's not leaving til he sees Kay. Nina tells him "pitch a tent" (tee-hee!), but Kay invites him in. She says "you must have been laughing at this this whole time". Cane argues, and tells Jill he loved being her son, but Kay has had it up to here! and orders him out. 11:25AM EST: Lily sneaks out of the house, and Heather is suggesting that Phyllis may have "munchausen by proxy", and that's why she harmed Summer. She also suggests that Phyllis was jealous of Nick's relationship with Sharon and that may be why she wanted to harm her daughter, prompting Phyllis to deliver a very hot slap across the face to Heather.
11:30AM EST: Nina can tell there's something more to Phillip's story, and confronts him, but he remains tight-lipped (for the moment). Lily confronts Cane, who says "sure I lied, but look at my chest in this shirt. Are you sure you can't forgive me?" 11:40AM EST: Phillip follows Nina out to the pool, and says "ask me anything you want". She wants to know how he managed to plan the whole disappearance while he was in a hospital bed. He explains that he used his money to bribe doctors, cops etc., and basically the writers are just trying cover their asses about stuff that happened twenty years ago. Nina says "didn't you love us at all?" Cane tells Lily that everything he did was for her (Anthony is right - he does have stones). Kay and Jill bond over their shared anger about Cane and Phillip. 11:45AM EST: Mary Jane meets freshly-slapped Heather, who assures her that no one will find out that it was she who reported the 'abuse". Meanwhile, Nick and Phyllis are growing closer as they decide to visit the hospital. 11:50AM EST: Phillip says "I thought it was a good idea at the time", but when he heard about Kay's "death" last year, he knew he had to come back and "face his truth". Nina says "what does that mean? What was so awful that you couldn't talk to us about it?" 11:55AM EST: Mary Jane calls Phyllis at the hospital and goes all crazy eyes when she learns that Nick is there with her. Jill and Kay try to understand why Phillip left, and then say that they need to tell him the truth. That his father is still alive. Nina still wants answers. Phillip says "Back then I felt ashamed", and Nina wants to know why. Phillip says "I was acting a part. I felt trapped". He says he's been hiding from the truth. Nina says "what truth?" and Phillip says "I'm gay. I've always been gay". And we officially have another daytime gay character! PREVIEW TIME: No Phillip, but we get Rafe and Adam! Y&R - it's on!
I've got Y&R on too, despite the local CBS affiliate showing Price is Right. They had the MJ broadcast for later, so I assumed it was accurate. Whee!
I've got a designated driver today in snicks, so I'm gonna sit in the backseat and sip out of my flask.
The Height Thing
That explains it!
I Just Love...
Totally Agree...
Cane is so full of it. Sure Phillip threw away life he didn't want that sure as heck doesn't mean it was a life meant for Cane. And his excuses to Lily were even more pathetic. Everything he's done has been for her? Yeah right. He was no where in Lily's vicinity as Amber got her hooks into him well before he really made his move to get in with the Chancellors. Everything he's done has been a self-serving ploy to keep a hold onto this life he built for himself based on a lie. Lily being the sap she is will eventually take him back though.
Once upon a time I died. And like my namesake I got better.

Tomorrow's Show
Wait... It Was On?
See what had happened was
B/c of the Michael Jackson Memorial that was today at 1pm EST, they aired their regular soaps a couple of hours ahead of schedule, instead of just airing them tomorrow. I wouldn't feel too bad. I didn't find out until I turned my TV on at 12:30 too and got an eyeful of the Bold and the Beautiful too. However, since I missed the show, I watched the memorial (which lasted 3 hours) and it was quite good, very respectable, and I think MJ would have been proud.

Y&R
Yesterday I thought Lily's family were appropriately protective, but it went over the line today. Really, the idea that she had to sneak out of the house to talk to Cane was just ridiculous. And... "stay away from my daughter?" SHE went to see HIM!
For Mary Jane's sake, I hope Victor isn't the one who puts it together that she put his granddaughter in the hospital.
The thing I most look forward to in the Rafe/Adam storyline is Heather getting her comeuppance for every irritating thing she does. Not that I dislike the character, she's definitely in the "love to hate" category for me.
And re: the previews. Don't tell me Radam are coming to an end already? I'm having too much fun!
I agree re: the Heather character in the Rafe/Adam saga
I HATE HEATHER STEVENS. Cannot stand the character at all. It's hilarious the actress gave an interview to SOD and said that Heather is a smart woman. Um, judging from what's aired thus far, Heather does not strike me as the brightest bulb in the bunch. Not by a long shot!
The kissing ban lives on
After all the crap that ATWT got over this, I can't believe we're seeing the birth of yet another gay-male kissing ban on Y&R. We've already had a fade to commercial, and soon we will be treated to a cut away to aghast third party. After seven months of this on ATWT, I cannot bear to see this ever again.
For a few months Y&R was a really good soap and I was so looking forward to the gay storylines. But so far we've had lame and sleazy, and if rumors are true that PhillipIII will hook up with Rafe, we will have the most boring gay couple on TV.
So, I am done. And Luke and Noah will continue [unless OLTL takes the plunge] to be the only gay males allowed to kiss. I'll stick with the boys of Oakdale.
Hmmm......
I don't get the complaints about the Rafe/Adam storyline. It's a deliciously soapy twist and I'm loving it. But I tend to like stories with a darker hue and I don't happen to think all gays must follow a certain path i.e. be as squeaky clean as Luke and Noah. IMO, Luke and Noah would benefit as characters if they were written gray and had darker tones and shadings as compared to how they are currently depicted. They should be looking at how these other shows are crafting their well written and well acted stories and take notes. Besides, we should have all different types of gays and all different types of stories. If everyone were like Luke and Noah, gay stories in daytime would be as tired and dull as they have become, kissing or no.
I also think it's too soon to judge what kind of couple Rafe and Phillip would make as they characters haven't shared scene one and there are miles of storylines to be worked out before we get there.
With all due respect, Anthony
I think you're missing the previous poster's complaint--not about the story per se, but about the lack of kissing between the two men. I have to admit that even though Y&R is a million, billion, trillion times better than ATWT, I find it rather insulting that we're still getting treated to cut-aways and the like to prevent the audience from seeing two men kiss. You and I both know that if Rafe were a female character, we would see them kissing (and more).
I pray that OLTL isn't this skittish about showing Fish and Kyle kiss.
No.....
bad boy Luke
Anthony:
So you want a dark side to luke Snyder. Have you forgotten that he is an alcoholic who knocked his pregnant mother down the steps, got expelled from college and seduced his grandfather. I think that's plenty dark enough. Luke is certainly no angel and that's why he and Noah are a perfect match. They have more chemistry together than any other couple in daytime!
You Have A Point, But....
Given that the thought of same sex kissing...
...seemingly played a role in the departure of Chris Engen, it makes sense that YR did not immediately choose to go there. I am still stuggling with the thought that the character of Rafe slept with a man whose actions led to the wrongful jailing of his aunt. As a soap fan who enjoys his drama with a semblance of reality, I didn't need an additional unrealistic visual. I expect I am not alone in that sentiment.
On ATWT, after the first kiss happened between Luke and Noah, obvious pains were taken to prevent a second kiss being seen. Further, that censorship seemed to only affect the gay couple, which was appropriately viewed as discriminatory.
An argument can be made that it is premature to label a soap as having a ban against same sex affection, when the same sex storyline in question has only aired for a few days. If however, over a matter of weeks, gay characters that are featured as prominently as straight characters find themselves showing physical affection a disproportionate amount of time, the unfair label might be more fitting.
In the meantime, how about we just enjoy what is shaping up to be the most engaging gay storyline to grace American daytime.
I'm Enjoying the Story, But...
I'm enjoying the story, but I don't think Chris Engen's departure justifies dropping the kiss. If they lose the actor AND give in to his demands, that's the worst of both worlds.
Given that Y&R supposedly has an even more conservative viewership than ATWT had, I'm fine with it IF they ease their viewers into it. If they go a bit further each time, I'm okay. If, a month or two from now, they're still doing cutaways, then I'll be ready to complain.
Y&R
Y&R has always been considered an incredibly conservative soap. That's why it was long believed they'd never do a gay storyline. I know I was suprised when I first heard about it. I think as the story goes along, things will progress. It's unfortunate, but Rome wasn't built in a day in this regard. And frankly, in just a few weeks, Y&R has been more daring in it's gay storytelling than ATWT ever has over the past two years.
As for CE, from what I've heard it wasn't the kiss that caused him to leave. The Suds Report said they wrote that it was a kiss because they didn't want to spoil the Rafe/Adam sex boink. But it apparently, was never about a kiss, but the story itself.
A kiss misdirection
Anthony, I agree with almost all of your points in your previous posts. I was really surprised that Adam's attempt to redirect Rafe turned into sex instead of just a kiss. I thought it was stupid of the actor to leave for just a kiss, but damn I am glad he left.
Michael Muhney was terrific! I know him from Veronica Mars where he played smary very well, but I didn't know he could do sexy, shocked, and confused so well. The Adam/Rafe scenes were light on the physical but heavy on the emotions. The Adam/Heather scenes were heavy on the physical side, but the emotion was all a result of what happened with Rafe. Was anyone else wondering more about what Adam and Rafe did than anything that Adam did (which was only a kiss) with Heather? Did anyone notice that the box was in the exact same place afterwards, as if it had been forgotten completely?
I would have loved to see the actors kiss, because who here wouldn't, but what they did was groundbreaking in its own soapy way. Adam has a lot of thinking to do, and he won't forget (and neither will the audience) no matter how many times he sleeps with Heather.
Anthony do you have any idea how far they are going to take this storyline?
-L
What I Know Is....
The only thing I do know is that that the Adam/Rafe affair is going to continue and get messier. But as far as details and specifics, I don't know. Y&R is pretty good about keeping things close to the vest and only leaking what they want leaked. They've even been known to give our false spoilers to the press just to keep plot twists underwraps. As much as what I do depends on spoilers and people giving me the inside dish, I like to be surprised sometimes too!
As for Micheal Muhney, I'm enjoying his performance. It's very different from Chris Engen so in some ways it's a very different Adam. But engaging none the less. Speaking of Micheal Muhney, we'll have an interview with the actor in the next GOOL.
What you know is great...
Thank you for all that you do know. I just watched the sneaky clip at Y&R's website. http://www.cbs.com/daytime/the_young_and_the_restless/video/video.php?cid=544198309&pid=8zs17MP5AVanVo7GpBpOMN8i3Sjxbxyh&category=recent&play=true
While the audience wont see Rafe and Adam kiss on Wednesday, Nikki sure gets an eyeful!
Personally I am not up in arms about seeing the actual kiss--the bicep, the shirt pull and Nikki's expression are enough for me to keep watching, or actually tune in in the first place, at least for awhile. You are right, it is going to get messy, and that is going to be ratings gold if they do it right. ATWT hasn't been doing it right for awhile, but I have to give them credit, without Luke and Noah, and the uproar over the kissing ban, I don't think we would have Adam/Rafe/Phillip/Fish/Kyle.
Let me be clear
I like the idea of this storyline, it is dark and daring. It's the execution that has me shaking my head. So, as long as the camera is forced to turn away, so will I.
Oh, and I think the notion that PIII concocted all this because he's gay is lame.lame.lame.
I feel like Y&R is revisiting the 1950s.
I agree
The idea was good, but the direction and the writing (and the acting) was truly bad.
So much praise for nothing
Given That....
