Your Monday Morning "Everything Bagel!"

That's sad to read that about Somerset Maugham.  He had one of the most interesting, varied, full lives I've ever read about.  I thought the main negative with him was that his writing was a bit pedestrian, but after seeing this article I researched him a bit.  His life was even more varied and eventful than I realized.  But he did treat his daughter abysmally. 

Also, I hate to criticize gays from earlier eras, considering the societal pressures they faced, but AE readers may find this quote from Maugham a bit disheartening:

"It cannot be denied that the homosexual has a narrower outlook on the world than the normal man. In certain respects the natural responses of the species are denied to him. Some at least of the broad and typical human emotions he can never experience. However subtly he sees life he cannot see it whole."  I suppose we shouldn't be too harsh about that, since in that era and that society his comments may have been accurate.  It certainly makes me glad I'm living today rather than then.
