Out star Neil Patrick Harris gets personal on his "Harold & Kumar" media blitz
Out star Neil Patrick Harris is on a good old-fashioned press blitz this week leading up to Friday's opening of Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay. He reprises the role of ... himself (or rather, a Bizarro World version of himself), and so far this week he's made appearances on E!, Regis & Kelly, MAD TV, and The Howard Stern Show. The Stern interview was particularly illuminating, with Neil opening up about his past, and about being an openly gay man in Hollywood. Note: Thanks to sources like GAYTVblog and MarksFriggin for their painstaking transcription and recapping of the Stern appearance. Be sure to check them out for more juicy details from the interview. On coming out to his parents: "I think their main concern was one of safety. Because their big worry was that it meant that I was going to be on crystal meth and get AIDS and have crazy sex with all sorts of random people." He started to realize he was gay when he was 13, but that didn't stop him from having sex with between 12 and 15 girls (!) before he came out. Howard pressed him about famous women he's slept with, but the only one he would name was Brady Bunch Movie star (and wife of Ben Stiller), Christine Taylor: "She's like the coolest, nicest chick ever. She's an absolute catch, and I thought if I'm not going to feel the super sparks with her, than it probably means that I'm gay." After the break, you can read more of Neil's beyond-revealing interview with Howard, including his opinion of Perez Hilton, his relationship with partner David Burtka, and some NSFW tidbits. As an added treat, we've also posted Neil's deliberately stiff performance on MAD TV. On Perez Hilton trying to out him: "It's a tricky subject because people decide they want to be out in the open whether in a public forum or in their family at their own time. But Perez is from a generation that feels like (being out) is a non-issue. It's offensive to him when people don't declare that, because in his world, it's always been a part of who he is." On his relationship with David, he said the two of them are strictly monogamous, and have been together for four years. "The best part about being in a relationship is like, going through phases and having things being great and things being not-great." "I don't know that once you're gay you get this card that says that if things aren't going great you can go f**k other guys." In a possibly T.M.I. moment (which Howard can bring out of people better than anyone in history), Neil mentioned that the best part of being in a relationship with another guy is that "sometimes you can be a top ... sometimes a bottom". Gee, I knew Neil was versatile, but... In the most hilarious part of the interview, Howard goads Neil into playing a game of F**k, Marry, or Kill, and he gives some surprising answers. Conan O'Brien, Jay Leno, David Letterman - "Oh wow! Ok - I would f**k Conan, that would be hilarious. Just to watch his hair move around in the front! I'd marry Letterman. I'd kill Leno. I think I love him even more now. He also appeared on MAD TV over the weekend, and starred in a funny skit with Michael McDonald called "Mannequin vs. Mannequin" (which you can see below). Once again, he's shown how multi-talented he is, and the more diverse work he does, the farther away Doogie Howser seems. Submitted by on Tue, 2008-04-22 11:20. |
