Out birthday boy Danny Pintauro through the years
Before Neil Patrick Harris was Doogie Howser M.D., another future out actor was cute moppett-ing up the airwaves as one of the stars of another 80's sitcom. Danny Pintauro starred on Who's The Boss for eight seasons as the son of future gay icon Judith Light. He turns thirty-three today (thirty-three!), so join us after the break as we take a look at Danny's long show-biz career, starting when he co-starred with a drooling, rabid, hulking creature. (I know what you're thinking, but it's not Tony Danza!) Above you can see the trailer for Danny's film debut, the 1983 adaptation of the Stephen King bestseller Cujo. I saw it again recently after a decade, and had forgotten how natural and raw his performance was. The fact that he didn't know how to read and had to memorize his lines with his mother before each scene makes it all the more exceptional. The first time I saw the movie I remember thinking, "stop screaming, kid!", but looking at it again, it's one of the most realistic kid performances I've ever seen. Danny hit the big time in 1984 with the premiere of Who's The Boss. Above you can see the opening to what was one of the great "comfort food" sitcoms of the 80's, which co-starred Tony Danza, the great Katherine Helmond, Judith Light (who had the most fabulous hairstyle collection of the 80's), and every straight boy's teen dream, Alyssa Milano. The Velocity of Gary After Who's the Boss wrapped up, Danny went to college and shirked the limelight until 1997, when The National Enquirer informed him they were planning to out him in an upcoming issue. He consented to an interview with them and officially came out in June of that year (not surprisingly, the first person he had come out to was his sitcom mom, Judith). In 2000, he starred as a gay hustler in the stage version of The Velocity of Gary.
We haven't heard all that much from Danny recently ... well, besides ... you know ... those "other" pics that came out ... but we won't go into that here. (Danny, hon, you included a face shot! Did you really think people wouldn't recognize you?) Wherever he is, we wish Danny a happy birthday, and hopefully we'll see him onscreen again soon! Submitted by on Tue, 2009-01-06 16:47. |

"Other" photos?
I'm really out of the loop, because I don't know what you're alluding to. But he looks kinda hot in the still from Velocity of Gary.
I remembr him saying, after he came out, that some fans claimed the knew he was gay from his Who's the Boss? character. I wasn't sure what that meant until I caught an old episode channel surfing one morning. In it, Jonathin is desperately trying to get attention from his male buddies (who are distracted by a sexy "pinup" photo of Mona), by luring them away with a plate of homemade brownies.
Or maybe it was just the way Danny's hair looked back in the '80's. :)
I didn't know either
I found this on IMDB:
Kind of similar to the brownie..
Jonathan: "Do you think you'll ever get married?"
Sam: "Yeah, probably. I want a husband just like my dad. What about you?"
Jonathan: "Yeah, I want a wife just like your dad too!"
I can't believe he's 33. Man, I feel old. Happy bday Danny.
Paul Ryan
Let's not forget that Danny was the original Paul Ryan on ATWT.
And as far as knowing he was gay, by the time Danny (and Jonathon) hit puberty on Who's the Boss, he was acting pretty fey. It was not hard to imagine that he was gay.
Good for Danny All Way Around. OUT IS GOOD
I'd love to see him get more work. I've always thought he was charming and had lots of nuance to his acting.
As for the "other" photos, he may not be all polished and shined but he's got a nice body and he looks sexy (weird as that is for me to say) and there is no shame in putting ot out there if you feel comfortable doing so in an appropriate venue.
Better he shoudl be caught naked for a perfectly reasonable reason (getting some action on a booty call/dating website) then, you know, sitting in movie theater or just getting out of his car with no pants on...
Anybody on A.E. gonna do a "Where are they now?" on him?
"Heterosexuality is not normal, it's just common." (Dorothy Parker)
And here I thought....
I was the only one who remembered him primarily as young Paul Stenbeck on ATWT. Poor kid: his mother was a simpering wimp who was trying to keep young Paul from being kidnapped by Paul's evil supervillain father. Eventually they aged the character and recast several times, but the same two actors play the character's parents on the show. James is still a bastard, but Barbara keeps veering between loving mother and bat-s***-crazy harpie.
Funny thing is, Danny Pintauro could now step back into the role, since Paul hasn't really "aged" since 1996!
Barbara, simpering wimp?
Or whimpering simp? Either way, it's nice to have a character that's been played by the same actor since her teenage years (although I think there was another Barbara briefly). Danny Pintauro is about six or seven years younger than most of the other Pauls they've had, but you're right--in Soapdom once someone hits their mid-20's they are basically in a holding pattern for the next twenty-thirty years.
I actually never saw any of the "Danny as Paul" episdoes when they first aired, but have picked up clips here and there over the years.
Judith Light's HAIR!
I still have dreams about Judith Light's hair. Good dreams.
And I used to want to grow up to be Mona. Oh Danny Pintauro, you were surrounded by great women.
