AfterElton Briefs: Paperback "Hero", another reason not to eat at Domino's, and more!

Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

  • Congratulations to FunnyOrDie.com for their Webby Award nomination for the fabulous Prop 8 - The Musical. In other awards news, Neil Patrick Harris has been nominated for Favorite Celebrity Player at the First Game Show Awards, to be televised June 6th on C-Span The Game Show Network.
  • Is a good old-fashioned Hollywood feud brewing between axed Desperate Housewives star Nicolette Sheridan and the show's out creator Marc Cherry? Let's hope so!

  • Above you can see The Daily Show's take on Bo Obama, the country's first openly gay White House dog.
  • Jeremy over at GoodAsYou.org has all of the sordid details and video of the gay Domino's workers who were fired for doing ... well, unsanitary things with the food. Not only were they fired, but now a warrant has been issued for their arrests.
  • Finally, on a brighter note (and apropos of nothing), I rarely refer to anything as "inspiring", but what can I say, Britain's Got Talent contestant Susan Boyle has completely melted my cynical heart.

And today's Briefs are brought to you by...

This guy!

    Eugh!

I am sooo glad that the Domino's I go to has a kitchen that is completely visible from the counter. That is totally rank.

    I feel ill...

Seeing the Dominos video was like watching a gay version of Waiting... only southern, and directed by John Waters back in his Pink Flamingo days.  Oh dear God...

    World's First Gay Superhero?

Don't make me smack you with a rolled-up Alpha Flight!

    He's the first gay superhero

He's the first gay superhero in the "reality" of that novel, I think, as opposed to the first gay superhero character created in the real world.

    Northstar

Since I dragged things off topic onto Alpha Flight's Northstar anyway....

Matt Fraction did an interview discussing, among other things, his decision to bring Northstar back into the flagship X-Men title.

What I found most interesting is that he mentioned that he found it interesting to write an "unapologetic, out-of-the-closet gay man," but that it was about the fourth thing he listed that he found interesting about him, which suggests that he doesn't intend to ignore Northstar's sexuality, but it also won't be the primary focus of the character.

Fraction's been doing an entertaining and interesting, although not all-time classic, run on the book, so I'm looking forward to seeing him try to integrate Northstar into the book again.  Hopefully it will stick this time.

    Susan Boyle

She really melted my heart, too. I cried my eyes out watching the clip. It just proofs that you should never ever underestimate people and judge them by their appearance, where they come from etc. And what a perfect song choice! Brilliant.

    The Amazing Susan Boyle

Watching Susan Boyle made me realized that many people today are so full of preconceived notions that we tend to ignore extraordinary things unless they blindside us just like that awesome performance from Susan Boyle.

You can definitely see the change in the audience (the judges may ham it up a bit) when she started singing ---the sight of so many jaws dropping definitely made my day.

    Bravo, Susan and more power!

I'm not ashamed to say she made me cry.

I've heard her name bandied about the past couple of days, but only just watched the clip now and it made me bawl. I'm not entirely sure why, but I suppose it's because the world is full of so much cynicism and ugliness that 'you just don't expect to see someone like Susan triumph over it all. People like her are usually made the butt of jokes on shows like this and maybe because I grew up an unattractive gay boy, I genuinely identify with people like this.

The look on the judges faces -- especially Simon's  -- when that amazing voice came out was utterly priceless. And I appreciate that the blonde judge acknowledged the cynicism and snickering that was going on when Susan walked on to that stage.

I don't know how far Susan will go now that she's been discovered, but I hope it's far and I hope she doesn't change a damn thing about herself because she's grand exactly as she is.

    The Love of Susan

Susan Boyle is totally irresistible.  How can you not love her, she is a true "English character" come to life. Her staunch upright walk and then out comes that glorious voice.  She could be anyone's neighbor, the local school Marm, the town harridan, sweetest mother holding the family together, the gossiper over the fence, or any number of established characters from Mrs. Bridges to Miss Marple.  The ultimate might be to have someone write a musical for her.  It would be brilliant if someone adapted MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS for the stage with all its great potential to be both a Razzle Dazzle show and the intimate tale of one woman's concern in helping others.

    That's all I am saying...
