Prepare yourselves, sweetie darlings! The "Absolutely Fabulous" remake has been cast

A few months back, we warned you that the American remake of the greatest comedy in TV history was coming ominously close to reality, and now our worst fears have been confirmed. The roles of Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone have been cast.

Let's meet the ladies hired to fall out of those boozy heels.

Kathryn Hahn

Best known for stage work, Kathryn Hahn was also in Revolutionary Road and a co-star in the series Crossing Jordan. She definitely has the look to play Edina, and in fact bears a striking resemblance to AbFab creator Jennifer Saunders (with a little bit of Annette O'Toole thrown in).

Kristen Johnston

Your new Patsy will be played by none other than two-time Emmy winner Kristen Johnston. Best known for the series Third Rock From the Sun, she's also made numerous memorable guest shots in such shows as Stangers With Candy and Sex & The City, and she absolutely stole The Spy Who Shagged Me as Ivana Humpalot.

Kristen has confirmed that the pilot is pretty much locked-up, but there's no word on who will play the supporting roles. She also had this to say about what to expect:

"I think they captured the exact amount of sweetie-darling," she says. "I mean, it’s a totally different element, it’s a totally different show. We don’t smoke, we are hungover all the time, we chew Nicorette, we’re trying to be more PC, but I think it really works. It’s one of those scripts that’s like my favorite kind because on paper you’re like, Oh, this is funny, but when you read it out loud with two actresses, it’s, like, the funniest s--- ever."

As a devotee of big, bawdy dames, I love Kristen, so I'm glad she's excited by this, but when she says things like "we're trying to be more PC", that completely misses the point of Absolutely Fabulous.

Jennifer Saunders is helping the show make the transition to American TV, but she already has three strikes against her; it's on FOX, it's on FOX, and ... it's on FOX.

So what do you think? If this remake has to happen, do these ladies give you confidence that it won't completely fail?

    The whole point of AbFab...

...was that it was totally politically incorrect. Patsy not chain-smoking while wearing patches and blowing up the kitchen? Ridiculous. I like both actresses, but unless you go all out with the show, it won't work.

    Yup

    Couldn't have said it better.

    I was determined to HATE

I was determined to HATE any sort of AB FAB re-imagining.

And then you said Kristen Johnson was involved. And my heart melted. I adore her.

And then Kristen said they were trying for "PC."  I knew then my first instinct was right.

I'll watch the pilot to get my Kristen fix but I don't know that even my love for her will sustain my interest in a watered-down AB FAB.

    This is ridiculous,how can

This is ridiculous, how can you play a convincing Patsy without a sigaret(or2 or3) in here hands.

    More PC ?

Agree with Snicks, Joseph and Sollasollewmn.

Read "More PC" and thought that is just the nail in coffin lid.  Game over. Do not past go.

    I love Kirsten too, but

there's no way the original can be improved upon.

    None.

Besides, who are they going to get to play Sapphy -- and the most important part of all, Mum?

I own all AbFab box sets

I also remember fun nights at JRs in DC watching AbFab on Comedy Central (they had satellite, DC cable at the time didn't have Comedy Central) as a community builder - honestly, it was the only time I could stand to be in JRs.  But I can't imagine watching this.  Some cows are sacred, especially one this outlandish.  You can't recreate the chemistry that the orignal stars had - hell, in some of the middle seasons, they couldn't even recreate it.  And making it PC?  That's just....wrong.  So wrong.

As for it being on Fox, well, I'm not a Fox fan these days, but they have, in the past, given us some of the most un-PC TV in memory - Married with Children, In Living Color, Family Guy.  If I had to pick a non-cable network to try this, it might have to be Fox.  I can't imagine CBS, NBC, or ABC allowing it.

Being PC + nuAbFab = WRONG WRONG WRONG

This is like the 2nd or 3rd time that an American tv production as tried to "re-invent the wheel" for the amazingly originally, campy, rich, hilarious and totally politically incorrect AbFab.

Here's the word to focus on: TRIED. Those other American productions tried to make their attempts work, yet they've failed each and every time.

I don't want to see a PC version of AbFab. I know as a viewer, I enjoyed seeing how frustrated, appalled and embarrassed Eddie would be at Saffy, her only daughter, for being an intelligent and responsible student (and still a virgin at 16 years of age). Choosing to not become a drug-addicted tart, shacked up with some 3rd rate "performance artist/guitarist".

There's a reason why things that worked well in the first place, do not need to be "revamped" for American "sensibilities".

Love me less, but love me a long time - Les Chansons D'Amour

Hmm... I read that more as

Hmm... I read that more as the characters are trying to be more PC. Which they would be, as PC is in now, and they were nothing if not zeitgist-chasing. Same with the cigarettes, Edie would have dropped them the second they started being uncool.
    snicks's picture

    hmm...you may be right.

it's hard to tell from that statement. But still, the thought of Patsy and Edina without ciggies does not compute.

What I don't get is why

What I don't get is why AbFab needs to be remade at all - why can't all America just see the British version? When American programmes come to the UK everyone copes perfectly well without a remake, what is it about Americans that makes TPTB decide they can't cope with (real) British accents?
    Dave's picture

Trust me, we don't get it either...

...but the networks keep doing it.

Of all the countless remakes of Brit TV none have been any good (All In The Family and The Office being the two anomalies I can think of); and yes, I'm including QAF in the crap list.

That's how I read it too..

I agree with Randommer. The original Ab Fab had its time and was definitely OF its time. Not to say that it's no longer funny, I'm sure it is. However the best comedies hold up a mirror to society, and the people who were the Eddies and Patsys of the 1990s would have moved on, stopped smoking, (but still be using fad diets). I say give them a chance...sweeties.

Acually thinking back to the last few seaons of Ab Fab...they were shite. I felt let down by everything after The Last Shout. Perhaps it needs to go in a new direction if it's going to be made at all.

    kind of agree

You're right that comedies are of their time - and I agree that the last season of AbFab was a bit shite (although, weirdly, when it had a really good, funny line, it was better than the good lines in the earlier season - but the laughs were few and far between). But for something like smoking and drug usage, that's still happening in PR and journalism in the leading agencies in London. There'd be more PR professionals having kids and the drugs might have changed to stronger pain killers - but if you ever want to get ahead in PR, you still need to be a champion smoker who hangs round outside the right places with other smokers.Smoking is the absolute networking - you can spend months not being able to meet a top PR professional through conventional means. Spark up a fag outside the Ivy or San Lorenzo or La Famiglia or Soho House or the Groucho or one of the other hangouts and you get a job interview over two Dunhill and a conversation over the more ethical brand of American Spirit. The language has changed, but the people are pretty much the same.

Love the actresses but hates PC...i blame the midwest....

Ok I think kristen stewart is due for a comeback (i loved her in ER) and i would love to see this...BUT I will miss my chain smoking Patsy.... I mean comeone her basic body compostion is Niccotene, Vodka, and Botox.... Political Correctness is not gonna work and its dead before it hits the air... GIVE ME CLASSIC ABFAB OR GIVE ME DEATH!....Or cake to calm me down...

My response to television's PC Abfab: Have any of these people ever watched the show? And if they don't like it, can someone go over to their houses and teach them how to change a channel?

Once upon a time FOX would have been the perfect place for AbFab. That time was when a little show called Married With Children was on the air. Gone are the irreverent screw being PC days.

I think the show would be better served if it was on one of the cable networks.

    It could work

We have a pretty good track record of making a english show better, but it won't work if they try to be PC.

    Sollasollewmn's picture

    ???

I'm just curious: what constitutes a "pretty good track record" for making English shows better?  Can you cite a few examples of where you think this has worked?

Saying ABFAB will be more PC, is like saying that married with children is the sequel of sound of music.

If Jennifer Saunders is part of the deal then it stands a chance but I don't believe for a minute she will try to copy the Brit version but come up with something that'll resonate with the Yanks. Unfortunately, the path of remakes is strewn with pot-holes and this may very well end up 'going down'.

Besides, how can you improve on the real thing?

    Maybe I'm dreaming, but

Maybe I'm dreaming, but didn't they already do a remake of Ab Fab with Jean Smart? It was on CBS.
    Gavin's picture

    I'm Hopeful

Maybe they won't screw it up entirely, I loved Absolutely Fabulous the first time but if they're gonna make it politically correct they'll have difficulty keeping the feel of the show .. I hope it turns out good, I'd love to see this re-done well.

    PC

PC means trying not to be racist, sexist, antisemitic, homophobic, etc. It has nothing to do with smoking and drinking.  The original ABFAB didn't have too many bigoted jokes in it.  For that matter, neither did "Married..with Children."
