Queerly beloved: The good, bad, and loony in same-sex wedding coverage

History was made yesterday shortly after 5 p.m., when Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin became the first gay couple to legally wed in California. They were also the first gay couple to wed four years ago when San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom began issuing marriage certificates to same-sex couples, but those marriages were later nullified by the courts. This time, the gay supportive (not to mention hot) mayor officiated the ceremony himself, and at 5:07, pronounced the couple legal spouses.

"This is an extraordinary moment in history and extraordinary moment in time" Newsom said to the crowd. "They are extraordinary people who have lived extraordinary lives and spent half a century fighting for justice and equality."

Only a few marriages were performed yesterday, but officials expect hundreds of gay couples to show up at county offices around California starting today.

And everyone is thrilled with it. End of story.

Well, maybe not everyone. While most of the media coverage has been positive (and very much "Just the facts, Ma'am") and most elected officials are doing their best to tiptoe around this powder keg, the entertainingly lunatic anti-gay groups were foaming at the mouth to put in their two cents. Here's a sampling of some of the coverage, from the matter-of-fact to the utterly ridiculous.

Same-sex weddings start with union of elderly San Francisco couple

A day to celebrate

Will gay rights trample religious freedom?

More cake for us!: "Concerned Women of America" is calling for a day of prayer and fasting today to ask for God's intervention to protect marriage.

Leave it to the insaniacs at WND to come up with this classic: Same sex marriages begin in land of fruits, nuts

And finally, over the weekend, "The Family Research Council" ran this ad. I still think "Enjoy this Father's Day...it might be your last." would make a great tagline for a horror movie.

Maybe the LA Times said it best when, in their coverage of the media response abroad, they noted, "Gay Marriage Reaction? It's All Over the Map."

Yesterday we asked if anyone's local news had covered Father's Day with a gay bent. Anyone's local media outlets have anything exceptional (or egregious) to say about California's big gay rice-throwing party?
